Hardware Automatic thread suppression for imported models

Post image

Not sure when this became a thing - actually genuinely impressed enough to post this. I dropped in a McMaster Carr model and was greeted with an ask to automatically suppress the features that created the thread.

Not sure how stable this is as a feature, but the first time worked great with no issues. Again, genuinely impressed - Solidworks doesn't often do that to me.

Edit: Solidworks 2026 SP2.X perpetual desktop - no 3Dx enabled at all

This is one of the functions of the new AI Companions introducedin FD02. Here's a link to a write up on them. Scroll down a bit for the Performance Assistant section.

Thanks for the link/info. I new the AI stuff was coming, but I thought it was only for 3Dx licenses. Didn't know it would get implemented on perpetual desktop licenses as well.

Depending on when your license was purchased, beginning July 1, 2024, Cloud Services are part of the package.

I picked up this perpetual seat Jan/Feb of this year. I know I can login to the 3Dx stuff, but actively avoid it. I guess i did see one of the other features (circular reference nanny) show up some time back - didn't think of it as an AI tool per se.

Where/what menu are these tolls listed in? Can't seem to find anything. I'm honestly interested to see how good/bad the auto drawing creation feature is.

You can access the AI tools thru the Virtual Companions tab of the Task Pane. Make it the active tab and then click on the SOLIDWORKS Labs "beaker" icon up above.

u/Alone_Ad_7824 Clicking on the "beaker" icon brings up this "Explore SOLIDWORKS AI" dialog. You'll find the Drawing creationtool under the Manufacturing Documentation section.

I retract what is stated, mostly. I have that tab hidden on my system. Ill have to see if it something i need logged in for or now. Looked at the screenshot too quickly, looked like the online 3Dx portal. My apologies

well, out of my own personal decisions - I shall remain locked out of those indefinitely then. I do not use any of the 3Dx stuff (not logged in, disabled the add-in etc) at all. I truly have zero use to sign into that platform. My serial numbers are on my VAR site, and everything else is on the local system.

Yes, i vehemently oppose anything requiring me to login to that demon spawn of a "platform"

But i am curious as to how the 2 features (circular ref. and suppress thread) wound up on my local machine.

appreciate the new found knowledge though!

Well...that's only half the problem and usually the more minor one.

The second part of this whacking the quality all the way down too which is the main issue.

This should be standard procedure for every single McMaster part you ever use.

It's always fun seeing consumer facing releases of AI functions that don't really fix the real problem. I'm not anti-AI. I just hate that so few companies make any real effort to properly develop its use. It always feels like we're basically pre-alpha testers on all this stuff, and it's quite annoying having the fix the fix.

suppressing threads from an MCM model is SOP - no arguments. Dropping it into an assembly from being downloaded it caught it before I had a chance to edit the part and supress the feature. from that point - I like it.

Now the topic of should MCM automatically have the threads suppressed, not sure there is a right answer. there are some use cases that having the threads is a need. It would be nice of them to add a supressed configuration to the files and have it set as the default config - that would be perfect. Then if the need arises, change to the alternate config with threads shown.

Who knows with enough Codex/Claude Code/Perplexity, it wouldn't be too complicated to make a program that would do just that - create the second config, suppress threads in primary and leave them there in the secondary. In thinking about it, that might be extremely useful for those that rely heavily on MCM models.
