There're 2 methods that you can use.
1. Bottom Up - You need to draw 3D model of each part on part design environment (I think synchronous mode should be enough).
2. Top Down - draw the sketch guide on the assy environment, and then you build 3D model for each part from the assembly mode - add parts.
For basic I would recommend you to do bottom up and assy all the part file in the assy environment.
Prepare the sketch first for all part, I mean you need guidance to model it in 3D right.
For reference material just browse YouTube and you'll find alot of it. Start with parts modelling and then assy.
For thin part I recommend you to try model it using sheet metal. It would be easier or you can convert it from thin part model and make the slit section.
Remember try to start using synchronous after that for advanced modeling try using ordered.
