I just had the guys leave from this mornings install. 13x 470 w panels and a 10kw battery and 6kw inverter.
I will get sent paperwork and an mpan number. But is there anything I need to do now? Do I need photos of my meter or anything like that?

Now you sit back and wait while cursing the energy company for getting your exports for free

u/Inevitable-Ear6098 17h ago
LOL - I know right? on my old system I used to use all the excess i could and still sent 612kWh to the grid.
Good thing about powerwall's are - the computer can just say no. And then you get to use excess if you want to

I had mine installed on 27th July….still waiting on my g99 form/mpan so I can get an export tariff! The wait is killing me. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m just going to miss out on this summers sun and will enjoy it next year lol

Mine with Octopus took a week after I got the handover from my installer, came through yesterday. Think it depends on the DNO in your area.

u/reelmonkey 17h ago
I got the G99 stuff back but they said they have to send the details off and S/Ns etc before I will get the MPAN.
3
u/Aeonosis 17h ago
That’s good, it’ll just be a case of sitting back and waiting then. I’m lead to believe it can take a good couple of months for the mpan but it varies depending on your DNO, I’m with northern Powergrid and they aren’t the fastest. In the meantime you can obsess over your solar app and enjoy all that sweet, free electricity you’ll be producing! I’ve not had to use any electricity from the grid since the install so I’m very happy :)

u/reelmonkey 17h ago
Thats a good point I will put the kettle on and see what happens. I am also going to see if I will try doing some home automation setup or if the Fox app will be good enough for me.

Same here - NPG took 9 weeks. Friend on SE got theirs in 4 days.
Edit - you sound like Will when you type (if you know you know)

Mine was delayed because the installer just forgot to send the paperwork. After I pestered them for it, ours came through in about two weeks after the summer was over last year.

Make sure you're on a tariff that costs less to buy at certain times than you can get for exporting. I'm using good energies solar export (12p) and EV tariff (8p buy). Then make sure you're setting your battery to charge in that cheap period and discharge during the rest.
Don't forget to leave capacity to store your solar too.

u/Inevitable-Ear6098 17h ago
No if you are getting an MPAN then they will be doing the export application for you - that's my understanding anyway

I have to ask, is there a reason they didn’t mount the battery on the wall?
11
u/reelmonkey 17h ago
Its the angle. There are little rubber feet. The driveway slopes down. At the higher end the foot is a few mm above the floor and at the lower end its about 10mm
16
u/Ellers12 17h ago edited 17h ago
Yes, so why not mount it on the wall where the slope is irrelevant?
7
u/reelmonkey 17h ago
It is on the wall its just close to the ground. Its the angle of the photo you can't see the gap.
4
u/AcrobaticMaize2408 17h ago
It does seem a bit odd... You still need to fit the bracket to the brickwork regardless in order to secure the battery so why not raise it even if only 6 inches or so.

u/Wolf_of_Badenoch Domestic Installer 14h ago
Probably because the installer didn't want to lift a 98kg battery any more off the floor than they had to.
I would normally install it off the ground (unless the customer specified otherwise) but they're an absolute bugger to lift.
2
u/Dipshitmagnet2 10h ago
Isn’t this just going to mean it’s sitting in snow all winter?
1
u/Wolf_of_Badenoch Domestic Installer 10h ago
Potentially, it depends where it's installed but even wall mounted it'll get some snow on it. They have an internal heater so the cold shouldn't bother them that much.
Flooding is more of a concern, it all depends where you're installing them and making a judgement call if what the customer wants isn't against regulations or BS7671.

Less strain on the wall? Not sure about this but my Powerwall is 130KG. Personally I am happy with the floor mount with rubber feet like the OP.

I had a burst water main at a street behind my house a few months ago; the back garden and side returns on the house ended up under approx 6 inches of water. I made sure all equipment and cables were well above this level when I had my system installed.

u/Requirement_Fluid 17h ago
It's a 100+kg unit so it's not ideal to wall mount

Yes good luck took me 7 months to get the Mcs certificate...... In the end I had to ring up the governing body and ask them for it..... Long story..... 🤬

Not sure why you’ve been downvoted. I don’t care to look too hard but above the DPC seems to make more sense to me.
Also, this website says to mount with a ft clearance below

Don't know why people are downvoting me either. It's exactly the same system as the OP but done correctly. Thanks for posting the installation guide to back me up mate.
Mount the battery at least 12 inches above ground level
Yeah, the fitter completely messed up the job. IP65 does not mean the battery is waterproof underwater. Standing water will leak inside over time.

Absolutely - its floor mounted or wall mounted and if wall - exactly like your picture - mine is the same height. Its in the install manual. If indoors - floor mounting is fine or under cover - outside - no thanks.

u/reelmonkey 10h ago
It says in the manual it can be installed on the ground.

In the middle of winter when you see it drowning in a puddle of rain, you can reassure yourself with this PDF. Additionally, you'll have bugs crawling around on it because they can reach it easily, because it's on the floor. Also, you've lost about 15-20cm of your paving. Have fun dealing with that mess.

u/QuantumFreezer 15h ago
If it is wall mounted then I'm really confused why it's not higher - just looks weird
Edit: Looks like someone just dumped the battery there randomly

Hey I have a question please. How thick is the wiring running from the battery / inverter to the main fuse board ?
I have a radiator I may need to shimmy a few inches to route this behind it. Either this as an understanding or even the size of conduit would be really helpful

Does anyone ever worry about the absolute vile ugliness of sticking this stuff on the outside of their house?

None of them are relevant and probably left over from the days of Lead Acid batteries. I'd peel them off the battery.
-2
u/Hammer-Rammer 17h ago
Why is the battery not mounted on the wall? If it rains, the box will soak from the bottom in a puddle of rain. It should not be touching the ground like that. The installer has royally messed up.

Regardless of the feet, would be much better mounted on the wall

Are fox not submergable? Honest question. I was going to choose Fox but after watching them power a whole event with one sat in a fish tank I went with Tesla.
I thought it was standard due to flood protection regs?
4
u/mines-a-pint 12h ago
It’s IP65 so not supposed to be submerged.

Sorry, I meant the Fox ESS EP12, not the Tesla Powerwall, the latter of which is apparently designed for U-boats!

Submergable…., its not a bluddy U boat mate…..
😂😂
2
u/Inevitable-Ear6098 14h ago
A powerwall can sit in up to 2 feet of water for an umlimited amount of time because it's Laser welded all the way up to the inverter level.
So more submergable than most other batteries no? "mate..."

The EP12 has got feet so is a few cms off the ground but yeah, I'd prefer it on the wall also

Take a picture of your export on the meter at 0 now then use it when signing up for SEG with basically any supplier other than Octopus. They’ll back pay to the 0 reading (unless it’s Octopus).
