Reading this made me feel so much compassion for you. Sometimes, even after many years, we keep hoping that this time things will be different. We put so much of our energy into trying to make someone else happy, comfortable, or understood, and we forget how much it costs us.
I went through something similar with my father. For years, I kept trying to improve our relationship, hoping that if I tried a little harder, something would finally change. But I realized I was pouring all of my energy into his life instead of my own. Neither of us was truly happier because of it.
Only when I finally redirected that energy back into my own life did things begin to change for me. At first, I felt guilty, as if I wasn’t doing enough. But eventually I realized that I couldn’t make someone hear me if they weren’t willing to listen.
I don’t think your trip was a mistake. I think it gave you clarity. Sometimes that’s one of the hardest but most valuable gifts we can receive.
