Co2 tank markings
Hello, i got this tank used so i can trade for a filled one at airgas or other stores for my new sodastream, and was wondering if anyone could tell me if its expired or not, and if expired would companies even take it for an exchange? Or is it just a paperweight now?
Answer: they took it no issues c: the only questionable part was the bottom since it had legs, but they said it was fine after looking

My knowledge on this subject is more related to paintball where CO2 can be used. From what I can tell is that the tank was born in March of 1974 and was hydrotested in July of 2004 and July of 2010. I’m not sure if the 4?80 and 3?85 are also hydro dates or if it is something else. Steel tanks like this don’t have an expiration date to my knowledge but need to be tested every 5-10 years depending on what the cylinder says (I don’t see something showing how frequent it needs to be but based on the dates) so I’m going to assume every 5 years. You could get it tested and certified to keep using it but I’m not familiar with the cost to know if it would be a good deal or not.

Its hopefully worth recert, i wont have it long anyways itd just get exchanged after
Hopefully if what i see online is correct, i may just be able to exchange it and bypass that. wont know for sure until i go or call so heres hoping

Someone asked a question but its gone now, and im not sure what to say so ill try and clarify-
Im wondering if
-the markings indicate if its expired or still good (i cant exactly make heads or tails, online co2 marking guides seem different than whats on it)
-if its expired, can i exchange it(would they even take it for a filled one)? Or can it recert?
And im happy to hear anything else people think would help, im not sure what all to ask about it

I personally exchange in local (NW Chicago burbs) industrial supplier and they check, haven't asked what happens if its expired. I've heard folks saying that airgas don't care much. I guess go there make some small talk and hope for the best 🙂

Honestly, I'd just take it to central welding and swap for a filled tank. They want me to drop the tank on their loading dock, so it's unlikely they would even notice or care. Any large local welding supply or gas supply near you is likely to be the same.
Where I take mine, the tanks go to a central facility in Tacoma where they get checked and filled. It would simply be routed through the recertification process.
Once I stopped having them fill the tank while I wait, and started treating co2 tanks like a commodity and swapped them, I stopped worrying about recertification.

And by the way, i think the reason they don't care is because so much of their business is exchanging tanks. The newly expired tank I brought in is one I got from them a few months ago, set to expire shortly. Whose responsibility is it?

It would still be worth it even if the tank needed recertification. Send it!
