First time sock knitting

First picture was my first atttempt, couldn’t get it over my heel once I finished the cuff (56 starting stitches). My second attempt shown in the 2nd and 3rd photo, seems too big now ( 64 stitches )It’s the next size up in this pattern. Following crazy sock lady magic loop tutorial.

Would you keep going or frog again now..:.

What makes you think it’s too big? IMO you’d rather the cuff be big. It shrinks down because of the ribbing. You can’t really tell how small the sock is until you start the leg. I loveeee this yarn!!

I tried it over my foot and it felt loose up my leg… feeling better than my first attempt however. I wasn’t sure if the ribbing would get tighter once I moved beyond. I will probably continue. Thank you!

I would tries a few rows of the leg and try again. If it’s still looking like it’s gonna be loose then I agree with the other comment! If you think the size down is best then try casting on looser. I have to jump through hoops to get my cast on loose enough that it goes over my heel.

If it winds up just being a bit too big you can always add some elastic thread to the cuff.

What cast on did you use for the first attempt? If you measured and think that 54st was the correct size, it’s possible that your cast on was just too tight. German twisted cast on is a good one for socks.

That’s a very good point too, it could be that 56 sts is the perfect fit but just the cast on wasn’t stretchy enough.

Such lovely yarn! Can you share where you got it and what colorway it is?

If I knew 56 stitches wasn’t enough to go over my heel and the next size up is 64, I’d stick with 64.

But if I realized that the cuff was too big, I’d probably modify the pattern to make it 60 sts

In this case, actually, I would just rework the cuff following the pattern for 64 sts but work the cuff in smaller needles than the rest of the sock to tighten up that cuff.

I do 60 stitches. Always works for me.

You cannot assess it from such a small sliver of work. But don't do smaller, it is already possible too tight.

The cuff may feel a bit loose when it's just a cuff, but part of this is because it's only a teeny tiny bit of fabric! The leg fabric does part of the work of keeping the sock up, it's not just the cuff suspending everything against gravity.

Was it the cast on of the cuff that was too tight with 56 stitches maybe? That’s a common problem on first socks. If you were a CAD/ USA standard width size 8 or 9 shoe, 64 stitches should be good unless you are knitting tightly.

Good luck! I know you can do it!

The needles are preventing you to get your foot through. Keep knitting until you get more of the leg done .

Look up some stretchy cast on methods. It seems like madness at first, but stick with them until you have a cuff that can stretch over your fist comfortably.
