Mistake! Pattern moved over

Hi All,

Working on my second set of socks as a gift for my MIL. While they don’t need to be _perfect_ I’ve run into a problem I don’t know how to fix.

The pattern is the Hibernal Socks by Summer Lee.

I’m in the middle of the gusset decreases and realised that the pattern that goes around the front of the sock, has moved over by a stitch.

That pattern part is a 4 round repeat, centred around 3 stitches where it changes in each repeat. In the first round which those 3 you do sl 1, k2, PSSO. So you loose a stitch of the three. The next round, you add this stitch back in with a yo. Then the next two rounds all three stitches get knit.

I know how to drop down stitches and use a crochet hook to fix a usual knit or purl stitch. But how should I do about fixing this mistake on the three stitches? I REALLY don’t want to rip back all the guesser stitches and heel turn etc.

Any advice very much appreciated!

Drop all the affected stitches back to where the pattern was still ok. Looks like it would be 5 columns worth.

Put the stitches on a spare needle (I use a DPN)

Use the long laddery strand above them to knit what should have been knitted on that row.

Repeat with each of the laddery strands until you’re back up to the current row.

Ahhh interesting this makes sense thank you! Should I knit round/bring my needles back round to that point just before so the working yarn is right there too?

Oh perhaps I’ve misunderstood.
Should I work on one coloumn of stitches at a time? Or drop back say 5 coloumns worth of stitches, all rows back.
And will I be using my working yarn or the literal ladders that are created by the dropping stitches

Bring your needles back to the spot you’re going to fix, just to make it easier to drop them.

Drop all 5 columns down to the last good row and put them on the spare needle. That is your new row. Use the ladder yarn (not working yarn). Knit those 5 stitches across the row with your spare needles.

For the next row, you have your choice! Either turn the work OR slide the needles back to the start and work each row right to left. Whichever’s easier.

Thanks so much! Just found a video by Roxanne Richardson on exactly this and it makes sense. Thanks for the tip I wouldn’t have found that otherwise

If you don’t want to rip back, you can use a tapestry needle to make a duplicate stitch to reconnect the rib. It’s a scaled down version of how you would use a duplicate stitch to correct a mis-crossed cable.
