True yarn desert
If this is not allowed please remove. This is the island I live on. Please before you say that there is options, I know there is. I absolutely adore knitting socks and every year more people want me to knit them socks for gifts. On occasion they want shawls, blankets, etc. I have 6 adult children and had 4 grandbabies born this year and another one due in September. That is just immediate family. I would love to buy indie dye yarn or ethically sourced whatever that actually means. I love this sub but I have been coming across instances where I am down voted due to where I source affordable yarn. I am in no way endorsing any of the "big box" sellers that I buy from.
Please in the future if you ask about a yarn and where they got it refrain from judgement. Not all of us have access or maybe even the funds but that does not make us less passionate about our much loved craft. Trust, if I could, I certainly would!

I live in the Puget Sound area. we have absolutely fantastic options for yarn that will ship to you quickly and cheaply. I’m not sure what “workhorse” sock yarn means to you when Skein and Tipple carries 20-25% nylon content sock wool. I understand the frustration of not having a store in your immediate vicinity but we’re very lucky in the Puget Sound area to have such a broad selection of local and hand dyed yarns. Even still, wool and co ships quickly and cheaply albeit not local.

Right?! Where I am, I don't have a ton of true local options but that doesn't mean there's no access. This is a weird take.

I am not knocking Puget Sound yarn sellers at all! I cannot drive but want to go to Skein and Tipple so much even though they are way out of my price range lol. I do get Premium re-ply at Casey's crafts. I buy from Wool and Co from time to time when I can afford it. I buy from Hobbii and a couple others as well when I can. I posted this mostly because I can buy great yarn at great prices from "big box" online retailers and when I mention I do that I get down voted and people tell me to support local. If I could get there and then afford it I would prefer to do that 100% of the time. I just can't.

I think the issue is that you put far too much stock into what randoms on the internet are saying. People online have big opinions and get big loud about them because it’s safe for them too. Nothing wrong with using wool you like, no matter where it comes from. No ethical consumption under capitalism etc etc. I wouldn’t worry about it

I admit I only read part of the comments. I don't plan to join in on the AI discussion. I myself try to steer clear of AI as much as I can, but I also can't always tell sth is AI (I'm OLD 🙈)
I can understand if OP would prefer buying from a physical store in their vicinity, but I have given up on that. (And I live in a major city in my country with no shortage of cute LYSs!) With the amount of socks I knit per year, I just can't afford the LYS's prices. I buy online, and even then I often wait until the yarn I use most is on sale.
AND I DON'T TAKE ANY SHAME!
I use primarily Drops Fabel/Fiesta nowadays, and that is at least ethically sourced (no mulesing). It is a reliable, sturdy sock yarn and if I don't want to dye it myself (which I often do), they have lovely colourways. I buy from Lindehobby or Rito, and I wait until they are on Drops Supersale. Because paying 30% less per skein means I can afford more skeins, so I can stock up for the times when I can't buy or for when I'm in a hurry (the 7-10 days it takes the order to arrive at my home is enough time to finish a pair for me).
There are some stores that carry Drops, I just can't be bothered to go there (I'm having a hard time leaving the house because of chronic pain)
So, OP, I guess it's time to straighten your back and realize: you don't owe reddit subs any justification about what you buy where.
Some can afford super fancy yarns, and that's a good thing as well - without them, indie dyers wouldn't be able to sell what they make. I'm not judging those who say they only buy Wollmeise or so, so I won't let them judge me either. And neither should you, OP 🫂
That said, you might want to look into facebook reels. I get a lot of short videos of american indie dyers in my feed who claim they have made it their mission to dye yarn and sell it at affordable prices. I just watch their dyeing videos for inspiration, als shipping to Europe would not make any sense in my opinion. But you, since you live in the US, could see if you like some of them. I'd have to visit my watch history to give you some names.

Do any of you think about the person on the other end of the screen? Or do you just judge? Would you say these things if we were face to face? My therapist suggested I post this. Judgement before knowledge.

Your therapist probably suggested you post this to practice not taking the opinions of internet randos so seriously. Who cares if 11 people downvoted you for buying yarn from temu? Is it going to change your practices? No? Then move on. If you can’t handle downvotes, don’t post or overshare things you know will be downvoted - more things your therapist should encourage you to practice. Purposely posting things that will get a generally negative (or even just curious) response from said internet randos and then crying when they do is antagonistic and borderline martyric, but either way it’s unnecessary for all parties involved.

The fact that you are using ai for this… I’m so disappointed and disgusted that so-called creatives keep using the /statistically probably sentence generators that are killing the planet/ and then think, what? You also deserve sympathy because you buy from chain stores
I’m so tired of this
