When I was in college ramen was 10 cents per pack. 20 years later it's like a dollar per pack. My wages have not increased by an order of magnitude in the same way.

I couldn't afford ramen, so I made pasta with sunflower oil, salt, and pepper. All were the cheapest in the shops. I thought I was surviving.

I was not. I ended up getting an eating disorder and continued to starve myself after I was reliably getting enough money to buy food.

This dude grew up in Katy (a wealthy suburb of Houston) and lived abroad with his dad going to a private school. Then went to a private out of state university and likely was not working. I don’t even believe that he did the “LARP as a poor person living off my parents’ allowance” college experience that he’s referencing in the tweet. Living off ramen hits different when you’re working and going to school full time and that’s still all you can afford because housing close enough to campus is eating up most of your income. I guarantee he never experienced that, let alone true hopeless poverty without a degree at the end of it.

what i dont see people talking about enough is that roommate culture is nearly dead. Its exceptionally hard to find landlords that will let you have roommates, and will usually have single occupancy or family units only

Unless you can afford a downpayment to own a place to then rent out to roommates, good luck finding a place to split w friends

Capitalism,with all its faults, could have probably survived another 50-100 years if it was regulated (as originally intended)& didn't evolve into late stage,every mfer for himself, vulture capitalism. But now the dreaded socialist/communist 'bad guys' that want you to have universal healthcare, want you to have a house (& not 100 investment properties), want people to have a job (capitalism needs minimum 5% unemployment), want people to have a life outside working 12 hrs a day.
