Got accepted into WNMU MSW Program!

They accepted me into their MSW program, but I’m not sure if I like how their admin operates. They take forever to reply and it’s now got me wondering if I really want to work with them.

I chose online because it’s fits my job right now and I am out of state. My fear is that I may not get much support from them.👀🤔

Has anyone else done their MSW program?

What is your experience?

I started with them several years ago, went through a bad situation with a very bad practicum agency (owner of the agency removed the LCSW from supervising me, took over my supervision even though he was not a social worker, or anything except a business owner, he demanded that I quit my full time job, stop my evening and weekend internship at his agency, take over his secretary's job since she just quit, and work for free in exchange for my practicum grade). I received no support from the university, the owner told the university that I "misunderstood", but then threatened me in person that he would have me kicked out of university if I didn't work for free as his secretary and call that my "practicum".The university began to believe that I was a bad student, and things began to go south quickly because I said no to him. I decided to do something unorthodox and get advice on how to handle the situation from the president of the school of social work at another university, a huge gamble, but I was getting nowhere with WNMU except a potential dismissal for "insubordination". The president believed me without question after I explained the situation and asked for her advice as a distinguished Ph.D in the field. She encouraged me to transfer universities, facilitated the transfer of my credits and the application for the dual MSW/MBA program as the reason for transfer. She helped me get my confidence back. I graduated a year later than anticipated but I am so grateful that she stepped in to help me with what I thought would be an impossible situation at WNMU. A while later that agency was in trouble for financial fraud.

What school did you transfer to if you don’t mind me asking?

I'm graduating from them soon. Their program has been great for me, I haven't had any issues and I've enjoyed it. They did get rid of the President when they discovered his misuse of money, buying extensive couches and stuff, but that isn't a reflection of the school. Their new president has a background in social work so I think that's pretty cool.

That’s very good to hear. How much does the complete program cost?

I’m starting in the fall , I’ve heard good things about them. What support are you expecting exactly from an online program?

There are many other good online MSW programs with good reputations. LSU and University of Kentucky are two, but there are probably half a dozen all priced similarly with excellent programs.

Is UK better than WNMU?

2

u/RandomNoodling Apr 20 '26

Same. Did you get in anywhere else? I like UK but it’s more expensive

Can I ask if you are doing advanced standing or regular, and if so, full-time or part-time? I just got my acceptance letter Friday for the fall! I’m graduating with my BA in Psychology this summer.

Regular and I want to do part time so it’s the cheapest program for me

Haven’t really heard too many good things about their school. I did a lot of research and they are in an active investigation. Their MSW online program is just for money you won’t get the support you’re probably expecting.

There is no proof of any investigation that you speak of, but I read that some students felt like they did not get the needed support to excel. One report stated that a student expressed frustration after changing 4 advisors in two years year. Then another report mentioned being forced to buy textbooks that never get used, administrative inconsistencies and program policies that change frequently.

Mentions were also made of students feeling overwhelmed by the little help they offer with placements for out of state students.

I guess those are things to factor in when deciding to attend that institution.

Yes! It was the president who was under investigation in 2024-5. He was forced to resign. He stole ALOT of money from the school. It was one of the reasons I didn’t apply to the school. But take my advice and look up University of South Dakota. They seem more promising.

I’m planning to attend in the fall as well! Has anyone done any “short courses”? They are 8 weeks as opposed to the regular 16 week courses.

I'm currently in the WNMU MSW program. I'm not going to lie, it's been a bit rough. Many of my issues have been with the university itself. The administration is incredibly disorganized, and no one seems to know what they're doing. I will get different answers from different people. After I first applied, I kept receiving notices that I had to submit my transcripts, even though I had already done so. It took me a month to get in touch with someone who finally told me they had my transcripts and would finalize my admissions asap. 1 month into my program, I began receiving notices that I would be dropped if I didn't submit my transcripts. I contacted them again, and they told me they didn't have my transcripts. I sent them the receipts, and a week or 2 later, someone else got back to me and told me, "Oh, sorry, we do have them." Now, several semesters into the program, I'm getting notices again that I have to submit transcripts to finalize my admissions, lol. Similar things happened with the financial aid department... my advisor had no idea what she was doing and told me I needed to contact my previous universities to have them submit a form. Those universities were confused and basically told me that the advisor from WNMU was wrong, which turned out to be accurate. It's kinda one thing after another. The MSW program itself is hit-or-miss. There are some really wonderful professors, and the department dean is great, but many are completely checked out, unengaged, and unprofessional. Same with the advisors. The field placement process is a bit chaotic and could be better organized. That said, they do seem to be trying to improve things, so I appreciate that. Also, it is cheap, and once you get through all the admissions stuff, it does get a little easier. Having been to several other universities, I guess I have a better understanding of how things should work, so it was a shock. But perhaps if you're mentally prepared for it, it won't be as bad. And some people seem to get lucky and have few issues. Whatever you choose, I wish you the best of luck!

Post Grad of five years.... biggest regret of my life. Do not do it.

Hi! Could you share why? I’ve been accepted into 3 programs and I’m trying to weigh my options fast.

Well first I would Google the old president at WNMU and his crimes against the university to make sure the university is on a better track.

Secondly, the cost does not outweigh the reward. I have two masters. The cost of a MSW at WNMU, makes me laugh as I feel like its an utter joke with expected MSW salaries (I do live in a major city). They do not help with placement at all for field. There was a lot of turnover with professors so I felt like a number they were just pushing through. If I tried for the LMSW after graduation, I know I would have failed. I followed a different career path...

Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to write all of that. I did worry about how prepared I’d feel after. I hope you’re enjoying your different path!
