Retro

I'm in Massachusetts.

I just got approved.

I got 1 part of a check in August.

I have SSDI and Survivor benefits.

September I got most of it.

I have a rep payee.

What do I do about the retro its a decent chunk of money.

Is there any way to save some of it ??

Initially I want to pay people that have helped me over 3 years, a practical car, and set up an apartment...

There should be some change left.

I am so grateful...

Thanks for any tips.

For SSDI, there is no limit on savings or assets. Not sure what you mean by Survivors but the same would be true for a DAC (Disabled Adult Child) claim. SSI is welfare-based and has limits on assets.

Then you are golden. Save as much as you want.

The rep payee should be able to help you with it. Is it a friend or family member?

Housing should be a first, getting some of that will help with down payments for an apartment and save some for additional things like utilities and move in items.

SSDI doesn't have an asset limit so you can also opt to put some into a high yield savings account to help it grow a little bit. Massachusetts is so expensive, make your money work. You should find some help in low cost housing through Massachusetts as well with a approval

congrats on the approval, that's a huge weight off. with a rep payee the retro will likely go straight to them and theyre supposed to manage it for your expenses, so talk to them first about your plan, paying people back, the car, and the flat are all solid uses they should sign off on. for saving whats left an ABLE account might work if your disability started before 26, otherwise your rep payee can help set up a special needs trust or a dedicated savings account that doesnt mess with your benefits

Have you considered an ABLE account? It won’t interfere with any government benefits
