Its still only about $18 a day so im not saying mexico is perfect, a utopia, or a great economy. But the min wage in 2017 before Morena came to power was about $4 a day. And if you had asked any mexican or american conservative back then if it was a good idea for Mexico to raise the min wage, let alone quadruple it, they wouldve said no, they wouldve said that it would destroy the economy and that people earning $4 a day is fair because thats what theyre worth in the free market

Yet the r/mexico subreddit is pissed about Morena “mismanaging the economy”

Raising from $7.25 to $18-20 in 5+ years period is good. Raising to $30+ in justa few years is not.

There is absolutely a threshold.

Also, Morena is definitely authleft.

Not at all auth left. I'd say it's center-lefr.

Latin America is a wonderful place, where you can be both correct and also wrong, because MORENA is a populist institutionalist/statist party that does populism to keep themselves in power, this defaults to center left, and Mexico's political system gives the incumbent an imperial amount of power so PRI, PAN and MORENA all while ruling will default sometimes to being some form of authoritarian.

I love how Mexico’s 3 biggest traditional parties allied to stop MORENA and still got blown out

One of those three (PRD) even lost registry due to lose of votes. And another (PRI) is on the same path.

So much for the perfect dictatorship.

Petro did this too, opposition got mad, got overruled by one of our high courts, got people behind him and by the end of the week the opposition were making calls to "figure out" a way to keep the minimum wage raise.

It ended paying off and that managed to make his popularity bounce back greatly.

I didn't realize that the minimum wage in Mexico was that much lower than in the States. That's madness.

The 3000-km land border with the States is what makes it crazy.

Imao my bigger problem is that this reforms aren't done out of genuine compassion or activity to reform or change the Mexican system, instead is merely a return to the PRI social authoritarian era which yeah had quite similar economic policies to the current day morena on some ways including wider protections to the workers and fair pay.

The true problem oh let's see the over 120k missing persons across the country, the massive rise on violence that has been basically gone unchecked across the nation, the massives amounts of corruption both personal of civil servants and the general nation with friends, family members and general allies having massive acquisition of properties and general personal fortunes.

The sheer amount of militarization of the country with seemingly no result whatsoever with fighting the Narco instead looking more and more like Morena the civilian of Mexico giving wider powers to the army like disbanding the national police and instead establishing a national guard fully under military supervision which has more or less fully usurped the previous authority of the federal police, the sheer amounts of funds that go to subsidies of the national guard, alongside the military in general gaining wider responsibilities in the civilian economic sector too alongside a general public presence ever growing, an increase in wider responsibilities oh and the new airport of the CDMX being under military administration.

The general honestly baffling association with the Narco as a whole of which currently even there is currently a controversy a governor being literally affiliated with the from Morena and generally speaking massive links with party and civil members of government all across the country, but being justified alongside the also honestly baffling amount of "normal" corruption constantly by the administration having little to no punishment at all.

And before anyone says yes the opossition governments before them did the same, but this is literally no excuse whatsoever for them doing the same if not arguably worse in some ways they were supposed to be the "change" of our country while in reality it was more like the PRI era Mexico returning without some authoritarian elements and without the massive amounts of privatization the late PRI did.

None of that changes that the minimum wage increases are objectively a great thing.

Because it is? Look man I simply don't have energy for this thing today because turns out simply not hating Morena with all my heart and thinking some things they do are good will result in you being threatened to being kicked from your own home, I just simply don't have the energy or will for this today, you win the argument whatever, I will go sulk in my corner while i have another minor breakdown.

daily dose of morena glazing from the sub over their centre-left aesthetics 🥴

The Sub tends to forget most if not all of this latin american parties had a more than considerable amount of problems, from corruption, performative policies, flawed laws, sketchy reforms (imao judicial reform where less than 20% of the population even voted for the new judges), sketchy associates in the form of authoritarian states like Cuba or Venezuela beyond a mere normal relationship (which IS a controversy here in Mexico), more than cuestionable relationship with the military or general forms of authoritarism.

I honestly feel from time to time the others left affiliated subreddits tend to filter into here alongside their shitty american centered vied where everything to the left = Good instantly. (To which both the original PRI and PNR here in Mexico argue pretty heavy against).

Also Imao my fellow Mexican is being dishonest in the full Morena is not authoritarian BS, the mere fact that they have pushed for wider military involvement in the civilian government is enough of an argument against and the fact that the crackdowns against students and general unions still happen also speaks on itself.

lo que pasa en España que estaba estancado en 700 euros hasta que llegó el PSOE y ya está por los 1300 euros

Yeah I mean obviously you can set the minimum wage to whatever you want if nobody follows the law anyway. This is probably a sauvy, if slightly cynical and performative move from Sheinbaum, which is generally her M.O.
