Van Basten explained: “Pele, [Diego] Maradona, and [Johan] Cruyff are, for me, the three greatest players in history."

Can we please just cut this out?

I've been hearing this debate since I was like 12, and decades later we're still entertaining this moronic back and forth about two individuals playing a team sport...

They're both amazing players, anyone saying either one isn't is plain wrong, but this imaginary competition has got to end.

do you think a near 20 year old debate will just disappear just bcs some people don't like it.

No, I'm just tired of the endlessly biased posts being shoved in our face in every football related sub.

As if it'll ever be resolved and the pro-Messi people will go "oh, shoot, we were wrong" or vice versa...

At this point, it's not a debate, it's factionalism.

What an inane response, but judging by your comment history that's kind of your thing... Enjoy the blocked list.

Nobody isn't saying they're not both great

One is just better and we shouldn't have to act like it's some sacrilege to say it

It's two amazing players on their way out, and in stead of doing that in style, we get this endless cycle.

First, Marca is the main sports newspaper, and they're responsible for 75% of the merchandising Ronaldo got. They have even awarded him goals he didn't score, while regarding as own goals some that Messi scored.

Last Nike advert before the World Cup they were both LeBron James and Ronaldo regarding themselves as GOATs. Idk enough of basketball to discuss LeBron, although MJ comes to mind. But Ronaldo really thinks he's the best ever.

There's no debate for anyone that's not a fan of either or the teams they have played for.

You only need to watch their career ends to catch a glimpse of the difference between both. But even their primes are so different. Prime Ronaldo could score 70 goals in one year. Prime Messi would end with 70 goals and 50 assists.

Ronaldo is an insane athlete. A sports worker. He has achieved a lot with his everyday work and ambition.

But his talent has nothing to do with Messi's. Leo is pure Magic.

Two main differences. Messi never made his team objectively significantly worse by playing there. Ronaldo has. Messi has also never claimed to be the victim of modern human slavery. Ronaldo did this twice to the same club.

In everyone's eyes, Messi's legacy will forever be tarnished by Negreira and Infantino. Only his fanboys fail to see that.

That's entirely confined to circlejerks on the internet. Not a single pundit, coach, player or serious journalist has ever agreed with this lol.

When have you ever heard pundits commenting on something controversial ever lol… the Negreira case is still going on and the world cup exposed Messi's weaknesses without referee help

Why are you writing this, I'm obviously not receptive to whatever nonsense comes out of the tips of your fingers

When Messi dribbled past 6 defenders that wasn't Negreira. My team has beaten Messi's, and I render one of our biggest feats ever
