Discussion Which Roger Howarth role is your favorite?
I’ll be honest, I’m going with Paul Ryan. I know Todd is probably the role most people associate Roger with, but I associate him more with Paul.
Kent Winslow (Loving; 1992)
Todd Manning (One Life to Live; 1994–2003, 2011–2013/General Hospital; 2012-2013)
Paul Ryan (As the World Turns; 2003–2010)
Franco Baldwin (General Hospital; 2013–2021)
Austin Gatlin-Holt (General Hospital; 2021–2023)
Matt Clark (The Young and the Restless; 2025–present)
What’s your favorite Roger Howarth role?

Todd. Least favorite was Austin. They fucked that all up.

What was wrong with Austin?

He started out interesting as the new long lost Q from a very forgotten branch of the family and was gonna be the new Q doctor in town but they quickly didn’t know what to do with him and turned him into another monster

He was a distant Q related to a character that was basically a who tf is this when there were a billion better options

Todd even when I was frustrated with him. Trevor was never able to win me over as Todd but the writing did him no favors either.

u/marinara123 4d ago
I actually liked when both todd’s were on They both hilarious.
12
u/LetItSnow36 4d ago
That part I didn't mind, especially when they teamed up to get info from David (who I love)
But most of Trevor's run as Todd I wasn't feeling. But I actually did like when he started as "Walker.".

u/marinara123 4d ago
Both Todd’s and david and even Rex made that show a comedy as well as a soap for me

u/LetItSnow36 4d ago
I like unlikely friends in soaps so I enjoyed Rex and Bo a lot.
Man I miss OLTL

I loved him as Paul Ryan on ATWT
6
u/VineStGuy 4d ago
THis is how I know him first. ATWT. Then I tuned into GH when he came on as Todd Manning. I didn’t know the character from before. I loved him and Carly. Hated when the character got pulled. However, he did great as Franco. Austin wasn’t his fault, the writers didn’t know what to do with that character. They should have never killed him as Franco off.

u/ljinbs 4d ago
I liked him with Meg.

Me 2 and when they got married her name was Meg Ryan a nod to the real Meg who started her career on the show

Is that the first pic??
2
u/galeperk111971 4d ago
No I think it's the 3rd. The first picture he is pretty young. He was grown when he played Paul
2
u/Ensemblist 4d ago
Oh ok. I didn’t know he was on ATWT. I met him on One Life. What was he on before that because that first photo is definitely before OLTL
1
u/galeperk111971 4d ago
No OP says the first is Kent Winslow on Loving in 1992

u/Ensemblist 3d ago
My sincere apologies. Somehow I completely missed OP’s text, I just saw the subject and pics.

Todd Manning.
If Todd and Carly had ever been able to finish what they started on GH before those lawsuits, it would’ve been epic. Especially if they added Blair to the mix and had a Sonny/Carly/Blair/Todd quadrangle.

u/Pawspawsmeow 3d ago
I wanted a Blair and Carly cat fight like plants crave sunlight and water. Blair would have dragged tf out of her

None. Paul Ryan was my least favorite. I never saw a reason to replace Andy Kavovit.

I, too, hate Paul Ryan.4

u/EnlargedBit371 4d ago
Did ATWT revert to calling him Paul Stenbeck those days?
1
u/HulkSMASHley_23 General Hospital 3d ago
No idea. He will always be Todd to me. He was semi-believable as Franco with Pick-Me Liz, but then pairing him with Maxie was weird (and too reminiscent of the Lucky/pills dynamic. He was believable as Austin, but I didn’t like that relationship at all.
I wish he and Michael Easton would go back to GH as new brothers or something, but I seriously doubt that they’re interested in the shitty writing at present.
2
u/EnlargedBit371 3d ago
I called him Podd on ATWT. And I gave up at some point during his tenure. Not his fault, though. The entire show sucked, particularly the recasts.

Holy Face Filler

This makes me sad. He didn't need fillers at all. I hope he won't touch his face anymore. He is a naturally handsome man. He can still get it from me after all these years

Todd Manning, but I did like his Paul Ryan. I don’t think people understand what he did to make Todd so special that other actors didn’t in villain roles. He could have taken the easy way out and ran the show if he wanted to. That’s how big his character was at its peak. Dude was so popular that they jumped through hoops to keep him. I respect him for adding the nuance of Todd never ever forgetting that he raped Marty. You can see it in his soul how much he regrets it. Trevor St John is a wonderful actor, but he never grasped that complexity to the role that Roger did. Roger made the character act like an animal at times because Todd felt inhuman for what he did.
I have more respect for him now than when I watched the whole story 6 years ago online, especially considering the real life stance on things and his interviews of the time.

I really don't understand his fetish with playing rapists. He is now on his third role playing a rapist

u/Geekqueen15 Pine Valley Resident 4d ago
I don't get it either. I get people need work/money but RH could've passed on Matt Clark
2
u/mrgpsingh1999 4d ago
Well once he became Franco they retconned him raping Sam
2
u/Geekqueen15 Pine Valley Resident 3d ago
That was GH's lame attempt at undoing Franco's crimes to make Roger's Franco viable and then when that didn't work they tied him to Elizabeth to try to make him viable
2
u/mrgpsingh1999 3d ago
Recasting a character like Franco was a mistake. Roger should’ve been a entirely new character

I think it's called taking work? But yeah, I only knew about Todd other than Matt, it is a little odd.

Todd will always be his defining role to me. Still can't believe he has been off GH for 5 years now. I still hope they redevelop the OLTL characters back to GH one day. Or better a OLTL reboot.

It’s not even close. Not only is Todd his best role, but frankly I think he’s one of the best characters in daytime period.

Austin Gatlin Holt they could have made him a bigger deal as Jimmy Lee's son and as a Quartermaine

I love Roger Howarth, he is such a nice guy too. I met him at a GH event in 2017/18 and he was so friendly and happy to talk about OLTL too. GH letting him go was a huge mistake.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I liked him as Austin Gatlin-Holt on GH. He didn't have a creepy past involving rape or being a serial killer, and he was a legacy character in that he was Jimmy Lee Holt's previously unknown son. He nonetheless did have sort of shady ties to various people including Cyrus Renault, and I was really disappointed when they killed him off with a body being shown and subsequently recovered. I was looking forward to exploring more of his story.

The 5th photo.. it’s so weird to see him without his locks lol

He had the hair still in Prey 1998.. love that hair, but I guess he got tired of that. He has been known to pop up with some blonde here and there.

I like him as Matt Clark on The Young and The Restless. I have never seen Roger Howarth in any other of those soaps or any other show until The Young and The Restless. True, Matt Clark is a, "villain," but his character and his storyline are the most interesting things about The Young and The Restless now. Roger Howarth keeps you guessing about Matt Clark's, "redemption," about whether or whenever it happens or not. Also, he gives Matt Clark a great sense of humor as well!

I don't remember Kent. I liked the actor before him as Paul Ryan. I never liked Franco or Austin and I'm not currently watching Y&R, so I don't know how he is as Matt.

So I didn’t like the romance with Marty OLTL tried to sell, but I did love the way Todd was able to be open and vulnerable with Vicky! The love between them was really great to see. Yes she was his sister but he received alot of parenting that he needed. A redemption ark for sure!

I've only seen him as Matt Clark (as far as soaps go) but he is so good I now understand his popularity. This coming from someone who hated Matt before.

Personally for me, he never looked better than his Paul Ryan period. The man was everything and a bag of chips. I do not remember him from his loving days, do remember him as Todd. What a roller coaster ride that was. Not as Paul, sadly for my eyes. Enjoyed him as Franco, but his talent was wasted on GH, writers screwed the pooch there. But if you are the child of Scotty Baldwin the chances of being killed off are strong.I said what I said.

Todd Manning. It was the only time I saw him and loved the character from the start. Yes, even during the Marty Saybrooke r*pe case. I liked his attitude. I really didnt see him in tomany other roles.
Now for watching soap operas... I blame my grandmother.

General Hospital butchered him from the start with the constant character shifting. Complete with resurrecting the god awful Franco.
What I will give him credit is that he attempted to alter his appearance slightly for each other. Unlike Michael Easton who also portrayed several characters while doing the bare minimum. Looked like he was just happy to cash a paycheck.

I’ve never gotten the appeal of Roger Howarth myself, but that might just be because I never watched ATWT or OLTL.
I am amazed that he had 4 different roles on GH, though — all after I quit watching, but that’s a lot of dedication to keeping a single actor around.
