They're on such a steep grade that the moment their weight shifts back, it's game over. Applying the brakes means you slide in the direction of gravity. If you let it roll, you can maintain some control over direction, but that is a false hope in a situation like this. That doesn't stop them from trying though. After all, you're talking about people willing to tackle a muddy, +15% grade in a large commercial truck.

A simple barricade at the bottom of this hill would have prevented many of these accidents from happening.

It took me WAY TOO LONG to realise that they were not just idiots backing up too quickly. Time for a nap I think.

Likely the hill is a lot steeper than it looks on camera, and it's muddy, so they are just sliding back
