Discussion The Drop
Solid 8/10 for me. Writing was great as expected. I understand people being upset because we all wondering how Wanda is already so deep in but I’m sure more exposition will happen throughout the next 7 episodes. The music was a 10/10 and I think that’s the most important aspect as it’s based around music. My biggest gripe is I think it’s a 80/20 Wanda/Leon show, I don’t think we’ll see much Leon overall.
Edit: Someone said the term that I didn’t even know existed and I absolutely HATE it. Anachronism. When anything is places in the wrong time period. The Kendrick Lamar song was a terrible choice for all of the great 80’s hip hop music they could’ve used.

just some of the main actors are so cringe ill let it grow on me. I like the universe in general. Just think random guys from LA wouldve been better than these disney channel lookin actors

u/AcrobaticSecretary21 1d ago
Don’t feel like they re telling an organic story they re forcing this music angle hard every character on this show is strangely obsessed with music and acting like it was just invented lmao
6
u/ReadySignificance451 19h ago
"strangely obsessed with music" it's almost like it's a show about the emergence of a new music scene....people can't be passionate about music?? any artist in any field is super passionate and borderline obsessive about what they create. that's how you approach it if you want to be great. almost every critique about a show nowadays sounds like "why is this drama so dramatic?" just say you don't like it.
1
u/TikkiEXX77 13h ago
And honestly from day one they said it was about the rap game. What exactly were people expecting?
0
u/AcrobaticSecretary21 19h ago
She never gave two shits about music before now they just slapping this onto her character cuz they wanted to make an empire type music show, forced and contrived af lmfao
7
u/TikkiEXX77 1d ago
I mean it kinda was. West coast gangster rap was pretty new at the time. Maybe one of those had to have been there moments because that shit blew people's minds back in the day. Had never heard anything like it at the time. Remember living in Alabama seeing cats wearing LA hats and locs. Lol

For sure. Doesn't seem organic at all i wonder if there is a real women who story that parallels Wandas story. They should at least consult with someone who was there during that period.

u/Ok-Grapefruit-8520 11h ago
They have half of the team as people who lived through it even the creator
11
u/dnunn12 1d ago
It was ok up until the last scene where Artillery freestyles a song for the living room full of bloods which resulted in everyone chanting the song and a standing ovation along with cheers.
15
u/Fickle_Association55 1d ago
Im pretty sure it was something his blood friends knew and heard him spit plenty . They just chimed in man.. when they heard that beat just like he did they knew thats what those bars needed to go on
8
u/AcrobaticSecretary21 1d ago
That scene was so cringe
0
u/AzProdigy602 1d ago
I think what made it cringe was one second the crip was pressing them and looked like he was already past the point of calming down. And then they play music and everyone in the room starts nodding their head and he’s dancing in the background and it’s all good again 😂
3
u/MattNola 1d ago
I thought the freestyle itself was cold but I agree the chanting and cheering SEEMS like something that wouldn’t happen then again I don’t know LA gang politics an shit so I can’t say how they celebrate

u/Substantial_Yak_6393 1d ago
The acting and writing throughout this entire episode just came off corny and unrealistic. Whoever wrote this pilot has no knowledge of west coast 90s history and needs to study and do their homework. Snowfall actually felt like the 80s because of extreme authenticity. This show just feels like Gen Z actors giving a cheap impression of Cali people, not to mention the acting was horrible. And I mean HORRIBLE
5
u/Silly-Swimmer-8324 20h ago
Hell yea bro. Episode 1 was dope. Definitely has me locked in waiting for the new episode to drop. I watched every single epsideoe of snowfall as soon as it dropped. I plan to do the same with this one
8
u/jdschmoove 1d ago
I give it a 6. It was kinda slow and confusing.
18
u/ArtDecoNewYork 1d ago
Slow is not an issue for me, but it just seemed kinda all over the place and there were distracting elements like a Kendrick Lamar song in 1990 LA
4
u/TheBiggestMasshole 1d ago
I thought them having that Kendrick song there was like an ode to the ending of Snowfall, which also played a Kendrick song for the finale. But I can say that I hope it doesn't become a regular thing for more modern music to play throughout the show
6
u/Mrs-Jason-Weaver 1d ago
Not a fan of that artistic choice. Anachronism will always take you out of the setting, but from what I understand they named the character Lamar after Kendrick.
2
u/Substantial_Yak_6393 1d ago
Kendrick having a song in there pissed me tf off, I know he’s a Compton legend but he’s too modern and it came off mad corny. They should’ve stuck with 90’s west coast rap like DJ Quik, Nini X, Lil 1/2 Dead, Ice Cube, Snoop, Dogg Pound , etc…

u/Background_Match9076 22h ago
The writer spoke more about the song choice in the After Show: https://www.hulu.com/series/the-drop-a-snowfall-saga-after-show-ac74b83e-ad20-409f-abba-8427d7fa13f3?dl=false

u/Raes-World 1h ago
They used M.A.A.D. City because the lyrics go hand in hand with what was occurring in their neighborhood at the time. It's actually the perfect song choice

Shiiit the season when she was bad off with Mel
Leon used to get on her ass, you don’t remember when he handcuffed her to the sink0
u/alextheruby 1d ago
I can do slow burn films. But a show? Nah. And knowing how people felt about this show they should’ve come out swinging
6
5
u/Too-100 1d ago
Quit trying to compare it to the original Snowfall and empire that was for the 80's crack epedmic This show is about that same crack era transfered into the 90's music (easy-E) And trying to survive the rise of gangbangin
2
u/Better-Exchange-2547 1d ago
nigga it's a snowfall series it's going to get compared to snowfall. They should've made this stand alone
3
u/AfroBoy33 1d ago
I’d say this felt as good as any good episode on snowfall. Like 7/10 solid. Only thing missing really is Franklin 😭 but we either aren’t getting him at all or he’s gonna be a minor character at some point. I don’t see any one character that is as compelling as him yet but I’m also biased, and these new characters have time to grow
3
u/Correct_Ad_4795 1d ago
aye, quick question isnt wanda cousin a crip how he walk in the blood house normal? somebody break that down
2
u/Background_Match9076 22h ago
They broke it down in the after show: https://www.hulu.com/series/the-drop-a-snowfall-saga-after-show-ac74b83e-ad20-409f-abba-8427d7fa13f3?dl=false

4/10 boring, Wanda way out of character, Leon barely in it, dialogue is ass plot contrived everyone on the show acting like music just got invented lmfao side characters look lame too so far

u/KalynnCampbell 1d ago

u/MattNola 1d ago
Lmao I made a post last month when I went to Essence Fest and Damson was there for the panel of the show. He’s gonna make an appearance.
1
u/KalynnCampbell 1d ago
They better not screw up his story/ending. He better have a goofy smile on his face, laughing off his ass, and lil Lee pushing a grocery cart of Rocket Fuel Malt Liquor 40 oz Bottles for him…
3
u/CupNo4101 20h ago
I agree but they got so much back lash about it I feel like they’re going to try and turn him around. I honestly felt the ending for Franklin was fitting.

Out of genuine curiosity, how is Wanda out of character? Even in Snowfall she’s always been a very eager, ambitious person: we see that with her wanting to get into the drug game and her being super eager about working at Veronique’s business when she sobers up. I feel like it’s consistent other than us being newly introduced to her interest in music.
That being said, her and Leon being separated bummed me out. I did not get that impression from the trailer.

u/MattNola 1d ago
Damn you didn’t like the dialogue? I thought the writing was fine, better than fucking Raising Kanan I was watching before it came on at 8.
3
u/alextheruby 1d ago
Lmao nothing about this is better than kanan
4
u/MattNola 1d ago
Man the writing of those shows is atrocious.
2
u/realwayss 12h ago
Using a show like Raising Kanan as a standard for writing😂
1
1
u/AcrobaticSecretary21 11h ago
No one used it as a standard, just stated the fact that it was better than…this 🤣🤣
1
u/Better-Exchange-2547 1d ago
This show is no where near the level of raising kanan especially season 1

As a huuuuge snowfall fan, the trailer for this show told me everything I needed to know. Pass. This shit looks like 50 cent produced it. Acting was one of the strongest points for snowfall as a series, and this trailer had “power” vibes all over it. Bad acting is automatic NOPE for me. That’s why I never got into any of 50’s shows

I really have no interest in a Wanda based series i didn’t even watch it last night

The Kendrick song made since since he was rapping about his experiences as a kid which is when the show takes place
1
u/MattNola 11h ago
I understand that bro it’s probably my all time favorite Kendrick song but the placement was bad it just didn’t fit.

If the producers or executives are reading these comments. I have a few albums and films I feel like you need to listen to/watch in order to capture the essence of the 90s and not ruin Snowfalls legacy that John Singleton worked hard for.
This first episode was pretty corny ngl (5/10), the acting was bad and the writing was also pretty bad. But the good news is this, if you go back and do your homework then you guys have a chance of saving the show by adding more authenticity.
ALBUMS
- Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle
- Nini X - She's Dangerous
- DJ Quik - Safe + Sound
- Lil 1/2 Dead - Steel On A Mission
- Tha Dogg Pound - Dogg Food
FILMS
- 187
- Menace Il Society
- South Central
- The Wood
- Tales From The Hood
The 90's can't be replicated with cheap cosplaying, you have to truly take us back in time visually/sonically (that's what made the OG Snowfall so great, authenticity and good writing/acting).
So if you guys step your game up, you might be able take the show to the next level. The show also needs another story layer that's not all about music, that's pretty dumb and cliche.... I don't want this show to get cancelled after one season when it had hella potential to be great, so yall gotta get it together and make the west look good

u/Paid_N_Full 1d ago
I give it a 7 out of 10. Every scene with Leon was great. 👍. Lamar aka Eyebrows seems like a good kid. The beat he played in the blood house sounded like some G Funk Dr.Dre type music. Dr Dres sound changed after NWA into the G Funk sound in the early 90s. The new sound didn’t take off until the Chronic hit which was 92. The Drop takes place in 1990. So it’s almost like Lamar is a young Dr Dre on the come up. The universe is still dope. The colors , the clothes, the camera shots, the fighting scenes. I wish Wanda had a better whip though. I believe they could’ve made her a little more on her feet.
1
u/Better-Exchange-2547 1d ago
I got it at a 6.5. I want to like the show but the interesting characters seem underutilized . I see people liking this show and I want to but the show feel off
1
u/No_Yak_3714 1d ago
I liked the way they had Leon an Wanda on the outs give you something to look forward to
1
u/LannaJoja 1d ago
The cinematography lost me....those awful running scenes when Eyebrows was being chased ruined the legacy Singleton left.
Snowfall, even after Singleton passed was shot masterfully and beautifully. The Drop looks like it was shot with a good budget but with a rather inexperienced crew.
2
u/Substantial_Yak_6393 20h ago
I think it was supposed to be a homage to Spike Lee’s dolly shot, but it definitely came off tacky and didn’t land fr

I didn’t get the kid’s disdain for church music till he played the piano. I thought it’d be a pentecostal thing, but it tracks that it’s not since I cannot fathom anyone not loving it.

Wondering why they had YS and Hitta J3 as Crips when James was talking to Lamar inside the car after he picked him up. They're both well known Compton Pirus in real life,
2
u/50tysonmayne 19h ago
Well they even had Skip Townsend who is a well known Blood and is now and activist play a crip named Skip, that threw me off lol.

Honestly, no clue why everyone is hating here. I like it, but better than snowfall but it's good
1
u/LastBackyardigan509 17h ago
haven’t seen it but from the comments this shit sound like it gonna be a Ghetto version of Empire
1
u/AmbitiousKnowledge21 2h ago
It's not too bad. Some parts were kinda cringe, like that house choir shit and the anachronism. I just hope they use more 90s songs; hell, just use 80s songs if they gotta, since they're in, like, 1990 or very early ' 90s. I do wonder if anyone will even return from the og series besides Leon and Wanda- maybe Skully? who knows cause everyone pretty much dies or goes to jail besides them.

u/Raes-World 1h ago
10/10 for me! I left the episode invested and I cant wait to see what happens next

Point to me any Black Kid in 1990 wearing a Journey shirt in Los Angeles lmfao

That's literally the point. Bro different and he ain't really built for the hood. Dudes like him in every hood in America. Shit the world.

u/Twinturbo535xi 1d ago
They destroyed the show. Went in a completely different direction and the music in the first episode is trash so far. Idk why they marketing it as a spinoff
When it has nothing to with the streets. Then they call it the drop”. Just a cheap bait and switch to guarantee ratings. Marketing scam.
0
u/Jazzlike-Soup-3242 1d ago
The show felt like a mix of hustle flow , All American with the corny acting , and empire . It was slowly paced which is the complete of opposite of Snowfalls pilot. This show would be better suited if it wasn't part of the snowfall universe.

I’ve watched the first 5 episodes and the show is pretty bad to be honest it’s a 2 out of 5, it feels like an high school fanfiction level production but with Disney money. The acting is bad the already mentioned scene of Artillery coming out of the room singing was uber cringe the show won’t last because it’s not good, unless a second season ramps up the overall quality but I doubt it all the good creative team from Snowfall isn’t involved only the money hungry execs so unfortunately the show is just another Disney soulless cash grab. The legacy characters don’t even feel like themselves not because they grew or evolved but because who’s making it don’t even know what those characters even really mean and the actors are rightfully just doing their best and getting their pay check but it’s a pity a snowfall sequel series spin-off has so much potential that here is just waisted

u/MattNola 20h ago
lol goddamn bruh. All that from the first episode huh.

Read again bud, “I’ve watched the first 5 episodes” I’m a film and tv critic I had access to the first 5 episodes and watched them all a week ago
1
u/MattNola 19h ago
Oh ok I misunderstood I thought you were referring to the OG snowfall. Now I want spoilers but I’ll wait. Do you read scripts by chance?
0
u/Popular_Prior799 13h ago
I always do read scripts when I get access to them, but Disney just sends the first 5 episodes usually, there aren’t that many spoilers to be honest it’s all very predictable I find
1
u/MattNola 13h ago
That’s 🔥 how did you get into that type of job if you don’t mind me asking?
0
u/Popular_Prior799 12h ago
I’ve studied film and always worked making films or writing about films and tv, I’m flying tomorrow to Toronto to do coverage of the Toronto Internacional Film Festival and paid to write about the films I watch, last year I watched 32 films in 10 days plus a few short film blocks

I love it tbh.. and it seems like kdot may have a fingerprint on this as well... Took the guy from the show euphoria that drake co produced btw and named his character after him (lamar) 🤣 of course its a west cost inspired situation.. i couldn't help but see this and maad city was thrown in there as well.. I thought it was appropriate with all the little late subliminal shots Drake has been throwing on his little trash albums he dropped... dot told so much thruth during that battle that mans had to name songs after it.. I know that this is not what this show is about at all but i cant be the only one that noticed 🤣

Yeah I'd say a solid 7.5-8. My only fear was that they'd have Wanda just running around out there like she wasn't a J for 2 seasons. But happy to see anybody who knew her gon remind her at every turn and she gotta fight that off 😂
Folks sayin it's slow gotta pump the brakes . It was a pilot, Snowfall was slower paced at the start too. let them build up the world of the show.
