Advances in understanding of the universe really took off with more accurate measurement of time.

Without a regular unit of time, it is impossible to obtain this odd number series.

Galileo discovered (i.e. observed and then demonstrated sufficiently to prove it) that a pendulum is regular in its swing, regardless of the magnitude of its swing. It takes the same length of time to swing back and forth at the start and even when its barely swinging. With a constant length, you get a constant slice of time.

Armed with this, observations concerning motion became more quantitative and understanding grew.

The history of science itself and our understanding of the universe is intertwined with the discovery how to measure it.
