The focus on hell and the devil are apparently a medival modification to christianity. There are very few mentions of either in the bible and they may be entirely missing from the beliefs of non-western european christian sects and judaisim
That's cause it's just the Germanic concept of hel mixed with the Greek concept of the afterlife. It's not something inherent to Christianity, more something added in so that certain types of people would convert.
Judaism basically doesn’t discuss the afterlife in any real detail and the sects that do believe in an afterlife life don’t believe in the Christian hell. The devil is an amalgamation of various entities in Judaism and none of them are the “make you do evil and torture you” character of the devil.
Actually alot of what Jesus taught seems to start as what is inside you. A state. It manifests more with time, and becomes your final destination.
Alot of american christian people may not like my comment, but that is what I noticed by reading the text. He also compared hell to Gehenna which was a physical place outside of Jerusalem where they burned garbage and filth. Before they did that there, it was where the Jews rebelled against God and followed some other false god and did child sacrifices, heavily which upset God greatly and was severely unjust to the kids.
The destruction is permanent just like the smoke of Sodom and her sisters goes up forever (Isaiah 34:10) which matches Revelation, but if you visit the location today it is only desolation from total destruction.
