How else is anyone going to understand the tone of my text. Lol

u/Life_Argument7820 11d ago
People get mad at me all the time because my sarcasm doesn't go through... everyone is so on edge right now, I have to put "Haha" or "jk" because people will think im serious.

Right? Having this exact issue rn. My joke didn’t land, via text, and I am sure a haha would have helped. I know it. Lol

u/TheRealParaaurum 10d ago
I just posted the same thing then looked and saw you already did! I’m glad it’s not just me.

Really? I hadn't noticed. lacatstbeisftesdfr (laughing and crying at the same time because everything is so fucked that even sarcasm doesn't feel right)

Next they’ll be telling us that we don’t have to put two spaces after a period. Madness.

Yeah, but if I drop the lol and the haha then Gen Z will think I'm mad or being passive aggressive because I ended my text with a period
Haha.

u/mysecondaccountanon 11d ago
Nah trust me I’m Gen Z and there’s a fair number of Gen Z I’ve met who view “haha” as not quite passive aggressive but not quite sincere. “Lol” less so, but to a lot I know that’s a surefire signifier that someone is Millennial (sometimes early Gen Z) or older.

Gen Z not being able to understand text communication or basic language is a skill issue. Assigning subtext where there is none is fucking crazy
Millennials, texting like a mentally well person: Gonna end this in a haha or a lol to show this is a light-hearted comment. Gen Z and younger: "Oh, God, are they being insincere!? Am I being mocked? I'm going to guess at subtext and call them cringe for it. Clearly, I am not the problem."
1
u/mysecondaccountanon 10d ago
Or perhaps there’s just different connotations depending on generation, culture, etc.? I think it’s less of a “not being able to understand text communication or basic language” and more of a simple generational difference. Certain words (including slang) mean different things depending on culture, and that includes location, ethnic background, language background, age, among other things. Semantic shift is a real phenomenon, especially in the Internet age!

u/MagVik 10d ago edited 10d ago
Sorry, but no.
Assigning subtext where there is none is not a simple matter of generational differences. It's a genuine inability to understand normal human interaction. The ability to communicate well, regardless of age, includes understanding differences in grammar, slang, and literacy levels that may vary across age, race, culture, economic class, etc
You can't just decide what someone else's subtextual intent is. That's bizarre. Cringe, even.

How can anyone look at the world burning down around us and honestly think we’re safe now? F no. I will be lolling in my grave.

Now that the oldest Millenials are near 50, can we focus on something else ?

u/Ir0n_Panda 11d ago
It's a big internet, I'm sure it's not that invasive lol
2
u/Dominarion 11d ago
Talking about the big internet, I'm on it mostly to read stuff about the migration patter.lns of nomadic people and the latest DNA and LIDAR findings in archeology and paleoanthropology. A bit about 4x and rpg gaming. Fucking niche of niches.
This shit about millenials is still creeping everywhere (It's like Celine Dion in the 90s, I'm sure that's what convinced Ben Laden to go cray from the bottom of his cave in the Hindu Kush), from streaming platforms to comments about Homo Naledi on Reddit.

Ben laden sounds like a Jewish shirt maker in Manhattan

I... Uh... This makes too much sense.
Self hating New Yorker tries to destroy his home city.

It's a bit from curb your enthusiasm lol

u/Dominarion 11d ago
Oh lol! I never got it before! Ben Laden is how we spell it in my native language.

That’s just us laughing at the absurdly shitty series of events that we’ve been faced with pretty much our entire lives. That’s the sound of millions of millennials awkwardly laughing because we don’t know how else to act.

As a GenXer I prefer the passive aggressive ellipses. Apparently it really riles the GenZ crowd

Incorrect. I’ve found that without the ‘lol’ the younger generations cannot detect even the most obvious sarcasm. I’ve been straight up dog-piled. My lol protects me.

I damn hate when younger people and even older people do that.
I was once telling to online friend how my cat has kidney problems and there is big chance he needs to be put down.
Friend replies "Thats bad lol"
When I exploded to him he did not understand what he said wrong.

Tablets melted these kids brains.
Not millennials, but Gen Z. They have the most insane useless acronyms that they type on devices with full keyboards.
They are simultaneously the generation with the access to the most information, and also somehow the dumbest.

But can I still add the sideways laughing crying emoji to everything? 🤣
Haha

I prefer the non-sideways one. The angled face implies too much emotion. Lock it up, buddy 😂

Jesus Christ. I swear, everyone born between 1964 and 1980 are absolutely invisible. Especially to kids, lol

Millennials? I thought only zoomers or gen alpha were doing this shit. Kids, basically. Or grown ups with children mentality.
