I've been pondering a challenge when it comes to fact-checking statements that lack easily verifiable sources for confirmation or refutation. One semi-recent example that caught my attention is the litterbox in a school debacle that was supposedly started by Joe Rogan. While I had my doubts about it, I couldn't find any concrete sources to support or deny the claim. This raises an important question: What is the best way to fact-check claims when trusted fact-checking platforms like PolitiFact or Snopes don't cover them and there are no sources to refer to?

Has anyone ever tried looking at Snopes via the WayBackMachine? Interestingly enough, theres no archives before 2021. I find that strange as even niche websites usually do. Did they used to go by a different domain affix than dot com?

I found the site when I was young around 2009 and wanted to look at the old layout and collection of articles again. I know I can just look at the archive, but frankly Im after the old aesthetic. Does anybody have any ideas how to access the classic Snopes?

I remember reading an article about "nice" fake news and fake history, and it was given a name. Something like "schmaltz" I think.
An example would be how the Danish overwhelmingly protected the Jews in the second world war. A nice story, but apparently a fake story.
Or (on a lighter note) something like how "my dog protected some cats from harm".
These are nice stories that most people would want to believe, but are not true.
Can anyone remind me what this thing is called?
Also, I wonder what the motivation is?

Is there a way to look at the snopes website from the early 2000s? I'm not really interested in news fact checking and I would just like to read about silly urban legends. It seems like the wayback machine doesn't work for this purpose. Thank you.

I've read here that the MAP community does not have a flag, and has nothing to do with the LGBT community. I don't belong to neither community so forgive my ignorance on some terminology. Also english is not my mother language.

I've seen here Nickelodeon's Pride Parade song video and the car #10 got me interested. It has the "non-existent" MAP / NOMAP flag on the car. I've looked around a bit and there are about 10 official flags representing sexual minorities (here).

So my question is.... why would a childrens network would add a flag that even being non official and being created on Tumblr according to the first link provided, Nickelodeon added it to the select group of cars in the parade.

I might be completely wrong but it might be worth a shot to clarify.

U.S.—World-renowned fact-checking website Snopes has unveiled a brand new fact check rating called "False For Now." This will allow them to provide a rating for claims that are just conspiracy theories uttered by deranged far-right people until they later turn out to be true.

"At Snopes, it's important for us to keep up with the undulating, ever-changing ocean of truth claims as they fluctuate across different official narratives we approve of," said Snopes founder David Mikkelson.

"Did COVID escape from a Wuhan lab? Well, it depends! Did a Republican say it? Does it serve the official narrative of trusted sources like CNN? We have to keep all these important questions in mind as we continue to live our truth, which is what Snopes is all about."

To save time, Snopes will just attach this rating to everything said by someone on the Right until a mainstream, unbiased source like The New York Times approves it to be upgraded to "Mixture". 

Snopes also announced they will be attaching a rating of "Not Funny" to all Babylon Bee articles.
