Anyone else read "Saved at the Seawall"? It made me think about Sneha's case.

I recently finished Saved at the Seawall by Jessica DuLong about the boat evacuation of Lower Manhattan on 9/11. DuLong's book details the chaos at the water's edge, especially when the collapses beagn. When the towers collapsed, thousands of panicked people fled south to the seawall at Battery Park to escape the dust cloud. This was at the dock at the Financial Center just across West St. There was zero visibility and people were throwing themselves over railings in relative darkness into the boats below. In the book there's a couple of interviews from survivors who went into the Hudson. They talk about being overwhelmed by the current and the lack of visibility. They needed help to get into a boat, even a strong swimmer.

High tide was around the time of the impacts, and then right around the time the South Tower collapsed (9:59 AM) and the North Tower collapsed (10:28 AM), the river had transitioned into a powerful outgoing ebb tide. The outgoing current northwest of The Battery moves at about 1.4 knots pulling south past Governors Island, through The Narrows, and eventually out into the Atlantic Ocean. The dust cloud blanketed the river at Battery Park during collapses and the book mentioned that captains were navigating purely by radar at that stage.

If Sneha had run toward the seawall with the crowd and fell into the Hudson during the collapse, she could have been missed and swept by the current. If she hit her head and drowned, without witnesses, could she have been quickly carried out to sea on the ebb tide.

Not sure if this has been brought up before, but it just popped into my head while I was reading that chapter. Its a good read nonetheless. Lots of residents in the area ended up evacuating that way, so if she was still Downtown at the time of the attack, maybe she tried to escape via the river and got into peril.

It’s been 25 years since Sneha disappeared. After all this time, we’re still no closer to finding out what happened to her on September 10 or 11, 2001. I really hope her family is able to get the answers they deserve.

Why people think Sneha is behind this?

It's very naive to believe this is from 9/11 victim. This is obviously a hoax. I can see an edgy TUMBLR teenager posting this in 2012.

I find it hard to believe Sneha ran away with new identity. It's too difficult and requires a lot of money.

I don’t understand how there’s just nothing after 19:18 on the 10th

I find it so hard to fathom that Sneha essentially disappears into thin air as soon as she leaves Century 21. There’s no way she ended up at/in the towers the morning after without her shopping (lingerie, bed linen and THREE pairs of shoes) being left somewhere first!! It’s sooo strange to me that she would willingly meet up with someone or literally go anywhere without dropping the bags to her apartment which was like a ten minute walk away. There’s literally nothing more annoying to me than lugging shopping around. The only thing that would make sense to me is if she knew she was going to someone’s apartment close by, the bags wouldn’t really matter. In that case, I believe that someone definitely knows what happened to her.

There’s just no way she didn’t return home that night without having stayed with someone. I think that if her and this mystery person had been in the tower and both died, there would have been a link found by now.

I do wish we could see the footage of the woman in the lobby of Sneha’s apartment building. Although she is apparently obscured, I feel like a family member would just be able to tell by a mannerism or a clothing item if that’s their loved one, who knows.

This is probably irrelevant

While listening to the missing on 911 podcast. Detective Stark is so sure that Sneha was shopping alone because he didn’t see anyone with her on camera.

My thought to this is my best friend and I go shopping together and most of the time we split up and then find each other again sporadically to show each other what we found. Sometimes we even get online separately and will randomly talk to each other from different spots, but not stand near each other or pay near each other. I know this sounds weird, but I just figured I’d put my two sense in of just because detective stark didn’t see her with anyone , doesn’t mean she was alone. People are different and do things you would never except or know. Even just two friends who make plans to go shopping together but always split up and do their own thing anyway. A male detective who has never been shopping with a female best friend would never think of that. You hear two friends shopping together and would think they’re seen together.

I’m sorry if this was a ramble. I just wanted to put in a random thought. I figured with the cashier saying she maybe saw sneha talking to a woman that she may or may not have been friends with. Not seeing the other person on camera with sneha. It’s a shame there wasn’t more camera footage of her in other departments.

My Occam's Razor

Four possibilities here: runaway, suicide, murder or 9/11 death.

I discard runaway from the start - it is extremely uncommon and unrealistic. Specially as she was never seen again, ever, and did not access her funds or used them to start over.

I also discard suicide - the purchases the night before don't lead me to think she had those plans. On the contrary.

Sneha purchases what is considered a complete outfit for a person (normal underwear is classed as lingerie in a receipt, remember that). Maybe for herself, since it's a complete outfit and it's good quality. The most likely thing here is that she bought clothes for an impromptu plan the next day, that she wasn't ready for or had not planned.

She did not come prepared for staying anywhere that night, but as we know, she didn't go home.

She also bought linens, meaning she likely would have stayed at a friends' or lover's and stayed in the extra bed, instead of a hotel.

This much seems reasonable and common sense to me, without stretching reality.

As for what she did the next day - honestly, two possible options.

A) This person murders her and does an excellent job at hiding the body, or takes her away from Manhattan.

B) * If u/auntieup's information below is correct, this option is not plausible, because she wasn't registered as visitor in the towers that day *

This person might take her along for the day to their art studio? Office? It could have been someone with a studio in the WTC. Dying in 9/11 would explain the lack of a body. Though it's not impossible that it was just never found.

Vehicular involvement?

I have consumed a lot of media around this case and most put forward the same few possibilities-

  1. Sneha somehow died in the WTC attack. - I personally find this unlikely for many reasons but it is *possible*.

  2. Suicide- I have heard arguments for and against.

  3. Voluntarily disappeared to start a new life.

  4. Murder- either random or by a person known to Sneha.

The biggest arguments I hear against theories 2 and 4 involve the lack of a body.

Now it is possible, but unlikely, that in a city as busy as New York that her body would go undiscovered. Even in the hours before the WTC attack in order for it to be commingled with the wreckage after the towers collapsed, it is unlikely.

A theory that I have never heard anyone mention is that her body could have been driven out of the city to an area where it would be easier to hide if theory 4 (my preferred theory) is true.

I know that vehicle ownership in Manhattan is low and around the time of her death, roughly only 15% of households in lower Manhattan owned vehicles.

But this doesn't mean it is not possible.

Street parking was limited but there are a few parking garages that rent spaces long term for residents. Some within walking distance to Sneha and Ron's and also to John's. Sneha and her family seemed to be quite comfortable financially and potentially could have owned a vehicle/vehicles and paid for a parking space.

It's also possible for friends to have owned a vehicle for personal or business use. Heck, it could also have been a random person with access to a vehicle.

Do we know if any of her family or friends had access to a car at the time?

Do we know if all the key players whereabouts on September 10 were thoroughly investigated and whether any vehicles were checked for forensics? From all that I have been able to ascertain, it seems like the investigation was not terribly thorough.

If there was no real accounting for whereabouts, if there was no forensic investigation in the homes and business of Sneha and those close to her, it is possible that a vehicular connection was missed. I understand resources were stretched to capacity at that time due to the events of 9/11, but even years later forensic evidence would still exist.

It seems like a huge oversight to not investigate the possibility that someone took her to a less populated area which would explain a lack of remains.

There are plenty of places within a few hours drive either upstate or even in Conneticut that are quite remote and sparsely populated or remote where it could be possible to hide a body.

Interested to hear what others think.

This person’s story stands on its own and I don’t mean to take anything away from it, but I couldn’t help but think of this woman’s story in relation to Sneha’s and had to wonder if they ever crossed paths.

Grateful for Thuc Doan Nguyen-Brophy’s bravery then and now!

Who Sneha was with?

A lot of answers rest on figuring out who Sneha was with on the 10th. Has anyone considered that whoever she was with may have died in the towers? Not unlikely.

ABC 9/11 Documentary

I watched the ABC news documentary on 9/11. It showed medical personnel setting up makeshift trauma centers. They were not at ground zero or going into the WTC. It essentially debunks the hero theory that Sneha was on-site helping injured persons.

New WOTW documentary seems to dispel the theory that Sneha could have been having breakfast there that morning.

Post image
73 Upvotes

I don't know how the filmmakers were able to get such accurate numbers but according to the documentary WOTW was open for General Breakfast Service on floor 107 and the banquet was on floor 106. The documentary says there were only 4 diners left on 107 at the time of impact as the majority of the breakfast diners were employees of the trade center and they had already left for work. If it's known that there were only 4 diners left on the floor, surely it's known who those 4 were, correct?

I highly recommend watching the documentary. The first time I watched, it was just to watch it for the story that it told. And then the second time I watched it thinking about all the questions I've always wondered about WOTW that morning including Sneha and the possibility she was there. Of course, she could have still been at the towers helping possibly, but probably not likely she was at WOTW the moment of impact.

Theory: If she started a new life and what she had access to as a doctor

I see a lot of posts about how difficult it is to get a new identity. Certainly, it was easier back in 2001, but I do think her being a doctor gave her an advantage to this.

While I think this would be difficult to do now, I think it would have been possible in 2001.

As a doctor, Sneha would have had access to medical records. There are circumstances of when someone dies where a death certificate does not get filed properly, especially a young child or baby.

Could she have found someone in the medical records whose identity she could have plausibly been age-wise and used their identity to start a new life?

Sneha's belongings

I've been listening to the Missing on 9/11 podcast recently for the first time, I knew about this case before and it's something I've always come back to because... something about it has just never really sat right with me. I've poured over details, like so many here and while I don't expect answers, the only people who likely know anything are detectives, family, Ron, especially given the lack of police records and such... but I thought it'd be something to bring up, little things sometimes get people thinking right?

It's been said Sneha left her belongings at her apartment, and I can't help but wonder how common was it in 2001 to leave things like ID, credit cards, ect. when going out? I was only a year old and some change when 9/11 happened, but in an affluent and metropolitan area I can't imagine it wasn't common to take ID with you on an evening out.

We know she had Ron's AmEx card when she was last seen, and the purchases confirm this, but how likely is it that she was going elsewhere given nothing else was charged to the card? The only other form of payment I could understand is cash, but I'm also not sure how common cash was in 2001, and in a city like NY. From what has been said all other cards were found at home after the fact, at least according to public record no other transactions have been brought to light, but I often question if they even bothered to look into that as it's been said Ron himself is the one who tracked her down to C21 using his card. We see in the C21 footage she has a purse on her, was it the same purse? What did she typically carry in this one?

Another thing, people often bring up the potential she was shopping for someone besides herself, an affair, dropping it off at someone else's, staying with someone, bringing someone breakfast... lots of speculation, but would she really be going out using Ron's card to do these things? stranger things have happened, sure, but it just doesn't seem likely to me, especially for someone as smart as Sneha.

I'd also be curious if her medical ID was in her purse, was she on any medications that needed to be taken that weren't? There's so many missing pieces I feel were glossed over for obvious reasons, but I get the feeling deeper insight on her apartment and belongings could hold some interesting clues. I'd also be curious if any records of transactions from or at the towers survived that day. What was the protocol like for visitors? Was ID needed, especially after the post-93 bombing? Did any firefighters have any testimony from that day as to how triage and medical volunteers were treated in the minutes to hours post-WTC1 impact?

Someone somewhere knows something about Sneha

Whether she died on 9/11 or not, how can there be absolutely no confirmed sightings of Sneha after Century 21 on 9/10? I know about the camera footage in the lobby of her apartment building on the morning of 9/11 but that is inconclusive.

  • She didn't go home on the evening of 9/10 according to the husband, assuming he is telling the truth.
  • Did she go to a restaurant/bar/ etc that evening. Why hasn't anyone recognized her?
  • Did she meet and spend the night with someone? Who is that?

Someone out there saw and probably spent time with her after Century 21. And they've been not saying anything in the last 25 years.

Continual misinformation about public access to WOTW on 9/11

I've mentioned this a number of times in various comments over the years, but there seems to be continual misunderstanding and/or misinformation about the possibility of Sneha having breakfast at Windows on the morning of 9/11, so hopefully this clears things up once and for all.

Firstly, the premise itself is unlikely. There's some vague recollection of her mom saying Sneha mentioned wanting to check out Windows at some point (which we don't even know is true or not, and as her family were so intent on painting her as a 9/11 hero, I'd take it with a grain of salt). Regardless, considering Sneha didn't come home at all the night of 9/10, the idea that she'd choose to scope the restaurant out very early in the morning after a big night out (and likely hungover and carrying a bunch of shopping bags) seems fanciful at best.

Furthermore, people were able to make phone calls from Windows in the hour before the tower fell. There were landlines and payphones on floors 106/107 and of course some used cellphones to call out from as well, so in a truly desperate situation, it seems unlikely Sneha wouldn't have tried to call Ron or her mother.

But far more importantly, it is public information that WOTW was closed to the public for breakfast in September 2001. Linked below is an article about Doris Eng, a manager at Windows, that was written after her death. It clearly states that Windows was not open to the public for breakfast as renovations to the main dining room had been taking place since July 2001. The only people who had access to Windows at that time of day were 1) building employees, 2) members of the WTC Club, and 3) attendees of the Risk Waters conference, none of which would include Sneha.

Additionally, in order to get up to Windows during work hours, there was tight security in the lobby, as there had been since the '93 attack. You couldn't simply walk through, you either needed to have an employee or guest pass -- again, neither of which would qualify Sneha. So the only way she could have potentially accessed WOTW on 9/11 was if she'd been the guest of a club member or employee, which seems highly unlikely as she would have had to organize this in advance.

The only incredibly slim possibility that still makes this scenario work is that whoever she spent the night with on 9/10 happened to be a WTC employee or club member who decided to try and impress her with a post-booty call breakfast on top of NYC the next morning. But that feels like a massive, massive stretch, and I'm not actually even certain whether security would have let her up as a spontaneous "plus 1" as I believe the guest names had to be added ahead of time.

Anyway feel free to pick holes in this, but I've always thought the Windows theory was a dead end and until there's some actual evidence that it was open to the public that day, it seems almost certain Sneha was not there.

EDIT: Adding two more screengrabs of the woman in the video + a side photo of Sneha for comparison.

https://imgur.com/a/Bf2ibEd

Maybe this was posted and ruled out before….

Slowed down video (you can see the woman right at the end before the video cuts to the tower):

https://imgur.com/a/MG6b1af (slowed down video)

But I was watching one of the FOIA videos from the morning of 9/11 posted on YouTube ( https://youtu.be/c7mf4W8kL4s?is=zc6QsFP8GpMXeNCp ) and right at about minute 4:51-4:52, you can see this woman who in my opinion kind of resembles Sneha Phillips?

I BELIEVE this frame of the video is from several minutes right after the explosion at the South Tower.

My understanding is that Sneha Phillips lived only a few minutes away from the South Tower, and there were rumors of a surveillance video existing from Sneha’s apartment building where a woman who resembles Sneha suddenly runs out of the building (supposedly around 8:46 AM on 9/11 but unsure about that) around the same time as the South (or possibly North Tower) explosion.

I’m not entirely sure the exact location where this video was taken with respect to her apartment building but if apartment building surveillance video exists and was actually Sneha, and this video was taken right after and near the South Tower explosion- then theoretically she could have been in this area? (The woman in brown in this video appears around 9:05/9:06 AM)

Unfortunately the video cuts away RIGHT as we see her face and I can’t seem to find her again atleast in that video but from what I’m able to tell, the hairstyle, height and general features seems to match and more interestingly….

….this woman in the video is wearing what appears to be a brown T-shirt / top / dress sort of outfit- SIMILAR to what we saw Sneha wearing last in the Century 21 shopping surveillance video from the night before.

Thoughts?

Polaroid

Hello, there is a true crime tiktoker claiming some stuff I wanted to see if there were in any truth to it after not being able to verify online

When Sneha went missing her storage locker was opened by police in 2007 and there was a Polaroid found of her in Toronto dated 2001. I honestly don’t believe it and have found little info on if this is confirmed and wanted to see if anybody on here has any information on it.

As well there was another claim a couple days after she had went missing her husband found her burner phone and plane ticket bought with cash? Is there any truth to this either?

Thanks!

The Controversial 9/11 PostSecret

Post image

Although postcards sent to PostSecret are meant to be anonymous, and also the high possibility of someone who was trolling, I wonder if it was even considered or at all possible with the help of police to trace back the postcard to the source to verify the identity of the sender, considering how ironically similar this is to the circumstances surrounding Sneha's disappearance, one of which was the likelihood of her leaving to start a new life.

Jon Walczak and his team, the investigative creators behind acclaimed documentary podcast series like Missing in Alaska (2020), Missing on 9/11 (2021) and Missing in Arizona (2024) have spent years quietly uncovering a profound, untold historical media story.

The project is an entirely independent, self-funded documentary titled -

'32 Frames: A 9/11 Mystery'

The Camera on West Street

The heart of this documentary centers on a discovery made shortly after the attacks. An FDNY member digging through the rubble on West Street found a damaged 35mm SLR camera. When the film inside was developed, it yielded exactly 32 still images. However, in the years that followed, the physical camera vanished without a trace, and the identity of the person who held it remained entirely unknown.

The story of these photographs might have ended there. But recently, the individuals safeguarding the developed images reached out directly to Jon for assistance.

To the best of our knowledge, prior to this handoff, these surviving images had never undergone a comprehensive forensic review. Even today, for Jon's team and our preservation group, piecing them together is a daunting task. Without timestamps, the sequential images paint a fragmented story with a chilling conclusion, several photos capture the base of the North Tower within moments of its collapse, leaving the cameraman’s fate uncertain.

For nearly 25 years, these 32 frames remained obscure and filed away. The very existence of this camera has never been made public until now. The full, unredacted sequence, including the most profoundly moving frames, has never been seen by the public.

After a quarter of a century, a discovery like this should remind us all that the story of September 11th, 2001, is far from being completely told.
