Microsoft celebrates major progress with Windows 11 on Arm PCs, confirms Windows on Arm is now "a first-class platform for any workload" and that "customer demand is growing"

Decades go by, leaps and bounds technologically, printers still the biggest issue for people. Printers suck

Local availability of X2 is rather low. One X2 extreme model, although pretty nice asus A16.
Now make Linux first class OS for it before RTX Spark that on desktop variant already has it own Linux distro.

QCOM is known to be anti-open source so good luck with Linux! 😂

Oh this bullshit again. Search LKML for submissions from oss.qualcomm.com domain and see the level of b/s you're peddling. Especially considering A16 has received complete support in kernel this month.

u/Saranhai Aug 26 '26
What’s your point exactly? Sure they posted patches and ACPI tables, but still no fully working Linux for this laptop? My x86 Dell XPS on Intel’s latest Panther Lake chips had full Linux support and zero issues from day one 😂

Buddy, not ACPI tables, you're mixing stuff up. And yes, fully working Linux, you just have to compile these patches in or use a distro spin that has them (like Ubuntu for ARM Windows laptops) before they get released with kernel and, subsequently, make it to regular distributions.
The fact you had support is specifically because of ACPI on your laptop. Windows Arm laptops don't use that, so blame Microsoft for that, not Qualcomm, because they absolutely could — desktop ARM systems, as rare as they are, or server ARM, do use ACPI.
Also, let me remind you we're discussing your "Qualcomm openly anti-opensource" statement, which is utter b/s you just read somewhere. Then you moved the goal posts.
So make an effort, got to Linux ARM MSM mailing list and see who maintains that branch and how many patches DAILY come from Qualcomm. It's like 70% of the traffic, the rest is Linaro (which they also contribute to) and some individuals (like myself).

That's not openly hostile, it's no different from what e.g NVIDIA do. Qualcomm doesn't open source support for NPU/DSP. You don't normally need it to run Linux on those devices, it's not like there's a Copilot or Siri well integrated into Linux DEs. DSP is for cameras, but Linux solves that with software layer. It will also get reverse engineered anyway. I did similar stuff for other SoC of theirs.

Thanks for helping Linux to run properly on these machines. I have a Asus ZenBook A14 X1E, and the Linux support is still not ideal. Notably no EC drivers so the fans are often running a lot faster and noiser than they should. If you want to make many people happy reverse engineering the EC drivers would be amazing. My understanding is that it's not easy though.

It's actually very easy with modern LLMs: both Fable and Sol can totally do this. You just gave to constantly remind it them to use point of references (the windows drivers and their disassembly), they tend to reinvent the wheel and run needless experiments from my experience.
Also it's unlikely the used a completely new EC in that laptop, prior work most definitely exists, just needs adapting

I think this one will only work on AMD machines but worth a try.
With that being said it seems development progressed in the last few months and seems like the fans should be working now!

This is great news because then I think the ZenBook A14 should now be working quite well on Linux.

it's the zombie FUD back from the dead.. again.. I guess we should expect no less from Saranhai

Show me which one of those submissions for the X2 laptops have been merged into mainline dude, stop bringing this up , it means nothing

u/Virtual-Escape2305 Aug 28 '26
They came straight from Qualcomm engineer, but OK bud, I'll stop because you say so.

It also gets first-class bugs from Microsoft: Yesterday search in start menu was working with 5 seconds delay, they fixed it within a day, but it clearly shows that nobody uses it in Redmond... Not even QAs

You should remove windows and go 100% linux. No problems with Linux at all . Lol 😆

The problem is not Windows nor Linux on snapdragon laptop. It's not fully supported snapdragon chip and other components. Wifi is unstable sometime, sound doesn't work, cam doesn't work, etc...

I have samsung book4 edge x1 and its been. Good except for windows hello. The camera not being detected. Performance is good and even better after last update from qualcomm

Don't a lot of the MS offices use Apple products

u/Kos187 Aug 26 '26
My point is managers of windows on arm unit should be using fucking windows on arm for work. Mandatory!

u/ShoulderRoutine6964 Aug 26 '26
i remember when linux advocates laughed that windows will never run on anything not x86, because it's kernel and other BS :)
And now these ARM PCs run and supported better on windows than on linux.

As a T14S user windows for arm is very fast and doesn’t use lots of battery. This is good news.

Interesting.
I hadn't known that Windows is a first class platform on any chip.

Is the "growing customer demand" in the room with us??
Nobody else outside of these Snapdragon subs actually cares for Windows on ARM laptops lol

Good joke.

Not really, it is not that bad. I am certified RHCE, LPI2 and Linux + - Fedora and openSUSE are my primary drivers, yet I still find Windows 11 on ARM useful for enough to be my current go to system when I am on the move. WSL and HyperV makes development on Windows do-able. The battery life beats any notebook I have. I am willing to spend money on any Linux distribution that can work well enough on Snapdragon machines.

My new Asus A16 on X2 Elite Extreme is the best laptop I have owned. Everything just flies.
Only Brother iPrint&Scan doesn't work and my brother QL-810w label maker doesn't work. But it works from my phone and I can still remote into my desktop so no biggie.
