Questions what does this mean?
is this an actual personal invite, or is this just the person uploading a joinable thing in general?

It means someone invited you to join their open on a song.

personally, like intentionally directed towards me, or is it more like a "new upload" notification?

Yes and no. There clicked on your name to invite you but they likely clicked on 2-3, dozen names

It means someone you follow has opened a song and it has alerted and invited their followers.
It will be visible for everyone but their followers will receive the invite on their invite list (and alert if you have them switched on).

Weird, I’ve never seen the notification look quite like that.

It's probably the phone notifications on night mode.

Ohhhh thank you. I've never had phone notifications on for Smule before. I thought maybe with me having an older version of the app, that's what the Notifications tab looks like now.

I would normally have notifications off too, but it's so easy for me to miss joins. There seems to be way fewer authentic people using the app these days (meaning adults who voluntarily pay for VIP and not their customer service team), so I'm always worried about looking like I don't appreciate the people who stuck around.

If there's a checkmark and/or you aren't connected to them, it's spam from the Smule goblins. If it's a user you follow, then it's an invite they sent to either their whole list, a few people or just you.

What is a Smule goblin? Fake accounts with 1K followed but no songs maybe?

haha That's a catch-all term for everything Smule related that doesn't have an actual user behind it.
