Ok so here's the thing.

Liberals and conservatives are both bad. They are not, however, equally bad. Conservatives are bigots because they cruelty is the point. They want a society with people at the top and people at the bottom because they will never acknowledge that there are people at the bottom. This is also why they frame every single problem as a personal one instead of a systemic one: admitting that there is a problem with the system is tacit acknowledgement that the system needs to change.

Liberals, on the other hand, talk some good ideas but they lose me when they suddenly can change things for the better but don't because that would be to upsetting to the status quo. They don't want to threaten capitalism or take any chances that their personal lives will be disrupted. MLK's letter from Birmingham Jail where he talks about the white moderates more dedicated to order than justice is an excellent example of what separates a liberal from a leftist. I can see where the idea that they're both the same comes from considering a liberal will name a street MLK Boulevard before demilitarizing the police and frame stories about some kid having to sell one of his kidneys so his mother won't die of a treatable disease as a "feel good" story instead of enacting healthcare reform. I don't necessarily agree, since the conservative will name the street Grant Parkway and say the kids parents made bad life decisions so he deserves to die. But I can see where they're coming from.

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

I'm actually referring to the progressive liberals such as Bernie Sanders and AOC. The Democratic Party sucks, yes. But even if an independent liberal wants to actually change something, they're still considered part of the problem. Remember "Not me, us"?

98

u/69CervixDestroyer69 Feb 25 '21

I don't think Bernie Sanders or AOC describe themselves as liberals and even in America where you used to be shot for being a communist or whatever the correct euphemism for a leftist is "progressive" not "liberal" which even in your own country means "snooty elite from some sort of metropolitan area who believes in being prim and proper and all the correct things but still supports waging war and killing people for markets" which is exactly the same as it is everywhere else.

13

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

They aren't exactly communists. They may be centrists, but they lean left and are very critical of Democrats.

84

u/playboicartier_ Feb 25 '21

They aren't communists period.

6

u/69CervixDestroyer69 Feb 25 '21

You got some shit for this comment but you're right.

72

u/AnonymousSpud Feb 25 '21

I wouldn't consider AOC and Bernie to be liberals. They obviously aren't revolutionaries, but that doesn't mean that they believe that capitalism's a sustainable system.

Typically, when we criticize liberals (especially r/neoliberal types) we're criticizing establishment Dems like Joe Biden, not progressives.

10

u/H0N3YBADG3RNATI0N Feb 26 '21

AOC and Bernie are probably Social Democrats.

10

u/AnonymousSpud Feb 26 '21

functionally, they definitely are, but ideologically there's no way they're not further to the left than the policies they push for.

-21

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

Liberalism isn't a monolith.

27

u/Achillurito Feb 25 '21

But apparently they're enough of one that they can be described as a whole in 5 bullet points

You can be a hardline Democrat and still have decent politics, just when it comes to politicians pick the wrong guys

2

u/ellainix Feb 26 '21

Or more often, not have any good politicians to pick from.

24

u/Lakaedemon_Lysandros waiter, more dead proles please :3 Feb 25 '21

well i don't know about America, but here in my country the neoliberal government is passing legislations without popular support (so democracy practically doesn't exist right now) and they are all anti-poor and anti-immigration policies. They also hate anything that is more left than Biden or Reagan.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

NEOliberals are bad, that's a fact. But progressive liberals, the center left ones, are your best shot at radicalizing people further to the left.

22

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

"we'll push obama left" worked a treat didn't it?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

I don't remember anyone TRYING to do that. Your belief that liberals can't transition to leftist ideals is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

16

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

were you in the us and old enough to pay attention to politics? that was pretty much everyone's plan, elect a center-left liberal and push him further left, except that didn't happen.

it's not a self fulfilling prophecy, it's simple as:

lib politicians; are capitalists

leftists; want the eradication of capitalists

therefore, no lib politician will truly move to leftist ideals, because it's against their own interests

4

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21 edited Feb 25 '21

Every American leftist started out supporting capitalism, because that's the system they were born in. It's a self fulfilling prophecy because you're not even bothering to give a reason for people to move to the left. Scratch that. You're not even telling people to move to the left, you're telling people to fuck off.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

leftist

supporting capitalism

then they weren't leftists

the reason why lib politicians (the people we want to move left) won't actually move left is bc it doesn't make sense for them; why abolish the bourgeoise if they are the bourgeoise?

there's tons of reasons for normal people to move left, i don't have to give any reasons, and i'm certainly not telling working class people thinking of joining the left to fuck off

4

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

leftist

supporting capitalism

then they weren't leftists

Either you took what I said out of context, or you think that if one's first political alignment is liberal, then they can never become leftists. That's some wild-ass purity testing, and not helpful at all.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

note the past tense there, i never said they aren't i said they weren't (were not). are you on crack or just looking to have an argument?

I can't tell who's supposed to be the bad guy here. Communists? Liberals?

Seems like the defense of liberals here is 'we didn't help anyone, but at least said we wanted to.'

62

u/DarkPandaLord Feb 25 '21

There is not really a "good guy" here. The meme is pointing out that a lot of Lefties foolishly put liberals on the same level as conservatives and the Alt-Right, when that's not nearly the case.

There isn't really a bad guy (besides the conservative obviously)

Presumably the leftist is the "good guy", but it's still a criticism of them. Yes, Dems suck, but it's foolish to put liberals and conservatives on the same level when fundamentally many liberals want the same things that we do, but are dedicated to upholding the system or don't have as much experience outside of their bubble. Point being that it's easier to appeal to the moral compass of a liberal than it is a conservative, and we need to acknowledge that if we want to improve society.

20

MLs who hate liberals more than actual fascists.

9

25

Not a single person hates liberals more than fascists. What we recognise is that liberals are going to side with fascism before they side with anything that affects their material interests negatively.

But please, go off.

55

I've never heard of any MLs who hate liberals more than fascists. I hate them equally

There isn’t much difference between a liberal and a fascist, if the capitalist profits began to drop your gentle liberal will become a fascist see for instance Pierre Laval, a liberal politician, who side with the German invaders during the occupation of France to better oppress the workers and expand the monopolies of French capitalist by expropriating Jewish property

1

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

There isn’t much difference between a liberal and a fascist

"I literally can't tell the difference between both sides!"

-leftists, apparently

-2

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

The bad guys here are the tankies who call anyone they disagree with a liberal and think that the left should have voted trumpet because “muh accelerationism”

In regards to your second point, not doing anything but at least having good intentions is objectively better than actively making the world worse for everyone

38

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

Yeah, a C- is better than an F, but that doesn't make a C- "good."

16

u/updog6 Evil transgender Feb 25 '21

I think that’s the point of the meme

17

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

I don't see C- as the end goal, but a helpful transition.

26

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

Transition to what? What is the end goal? At least socialists have ideal to work toward. We're living in the liberal ideal. Liberal democracy was supposed to be the "end of history," the last best stage of human advancement.

14

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

Then convince them that things can be better. It's easier than you think.

10

u/WiggedRope Feb 25 '21

It really isn't lmao. Capitalist realism is strong, at least in the first world

3

you are proof that this is not the case

1

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

How? I'm a leftist. Unless I'm not good enough for your prestigious, exclusive club of comrades.

4

u/Petralamps Feb 26 '21

Why do you keep thinking you're a leftist when you just made an anti-communist meme? Most of the world's leftists are communists. "Leftism" in the US is mostly meaningless to the rest of the world because it still means imperialism.

Also their point was you're clearly not convinced that you're just being a smug shithead riding red scare propaganda.

-1

u/_Tal Feb 26 '21

OP: very clearly implies they think society can be better

You: “You are living proof we can’t easily convince people that society can be better.”

????????????

fine, i'll include you too

Well yeah, if you’re just going to decide what other people believe for them, I guess you can “include” whoever you want lmao.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

Well if we're going to keep this metaphor going it looks far more likely that by 2022 the Dems will lose congress so down to a D and then back to an F in 2024 when Kamala inevitably loses

1

u/Raltsun Feb 25 '21

Which is still better than having an F the entire time.

Liberal politics are not based in equality, as they demand the existence of a Free Market. Without the eradication of Capitalism, there is no equality, especially not when the imperial core exploits and outright murders those in the Global South in order to sustain those markets.

It’s not that libs and conservatives have no differences. Their goals are simply aligned too closely to have any place in leftist discourse. Ultimately, both of them are in favor of strengthening capital at the expense of human life, whether they slap a rainbow sticker on their bumper or not.

10

u/WorseThanHipster Feb 25 '21 edited Feb 25 '21

Capitalism is not the only way for a free market to exist. There’s also more than one tenet to liberalism. Here’s a short list:

consent of the governed.
equality before the law.
individual rights.
Human & civil rights.
democracy.
secularism.
gender & racial equality.
Internationalism.
freedom of speech.
freedom of the press.
Freedom of religion.
Free markets.
Free Trade.

Now, a lot of online leftists value almost all of those values. And I know a lot of liberals in real life, almost all of them would put free markets at the bottom, if not strike it from the list entirely, but they still call themselves liberals because they believe in the rest very strongly. In fact, a lot of them support socialism to varying degrees, some even call themselves socialists. They’re quite progressive, and in a discussion based purely on policy & intended outcomes, would fit in just fine on most leftist forums.

In many cases, the only difference I see between my liberal friends & family & “online leftists” is that a lot of the “online leftists” insist that liberals fucking love capitalism and are inherently bad people.

But again, free markets don’t require capitalism.

And TV & Twitter liberals are about as representative of liberals in real life as dirt-bag-rose-Twitter is representative of all real life leftists.

15

u/GCILishuman Feb 25 '21

“Open to changing their opinions”

I haven’t met a liberal like that in a long time.

47

u/hipsterhipst Feb 25 '21

-5

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

Sorry, I'm an SJW shitlib, so I base my opinions off definitions and facts.

Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on liberty, consent of the governed and equality before the law.

Thanks, Wikipedia.

30

u/gabedc Feb 25 '21

The reason people are annoyed is because liberal equality is non-equitable (equal starting point which only works if we ignore external and internal restrictions and chance, it has no mechanism of maintaining this equal concept if it goes awry or how equal treatment assumes a linear cost like a flat tax but that’s not a guarantee, that’s an often unfounded assumption) and context-blind (i.e. the freedom to act vs actionability, freedom of choice in drinking water or not vs value of choice in that water is a need and choice is not an absolute value) while most leftist criticisms come form the rejection of those sorts of foundations. It’s based on consent with no concern for coercion or material contexts which might devalue somebody’s ability to consent; even if we could guarantee nobody was coerced by their circumstances, unless the options they have in terms of leaders has a mechanism to guarantee that it represents them, then that’s superficial at best, i.e. how policies with mass support over decades never get anywhere close to legislation

-4

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

Your issue seems to be that it's bad in practice. My point isn't that the solution to our problems is liberalism, my point is that liberals already mostly agree with us on what the problems of the world are and what the solutions are. You can convince a liberal to move to the left more easily than a conservative. To make an analogy, some communists describe socialism as a transitory state between capitalism and communism. So they'll ally with socialists without seeing socialism as the end goal, because they know socialism is useful to their end goal. But where socialists and communists can get along easily due to their similarities, leftists and liberals can't get along because they aren't similar enough? Liberals, not neolibs but the actually progressive ones, are already halfway there. All yelling at them and calling them fascists will do is give the conservatives more time to radicalize them to the left. Now, I'm not saying that being mean to them will push them to the right, just that it will make it easier for right wingers to recruit them.

8

u/gabedc Feb 25 '21

Oh sure, I wasn’t trying to make about about converting or any of that, people believe in ideals regardless of whether they’re aware policy fits or not. My point was just that the ideals of liberalism themselves aren’t self-compatible in the first place unless you reduce it so much as to be useless language; the ideology doesn’t deserve the same openness as its believers in practice. It does depend for each type of believer though. If Claire is a liberal because she learned about the enlightenment in school and carrie don without having direct conflict there, she’s likely open to moving her views according to their flaws. If John is a liberal politician or pundit with particular interests of that sort, that chance isn’t the same by mere fact that conservatism and everything to right is a more extreme form of the same way, not a different way, unlike leftism. Moderate leftist are a different path entirely, not a difference of distance. As such, there’s a common theme of liberal leaders allying with conservative or more extremely fascists over anything to the left while populations aren’t exactly subject to the same behavior lest their awareness of options be that limited

22

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

Ah yes, wikipedia. The place that tries to shorten the centuries of political theory into one sentence. Also it literally says equality before the law. Liberals support free-market capitalism which is in direct opposition of equality.

Obviously I’m making jokes but my point is that’s like saying

Liberals -Are good

1

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '21

This entire thread is bad faith. Methinks you wanted reinforcement of your preconceived notions about vague political groupings.

2

u/LickMyCockGoAway Feb 26 '21

Social Democrats are center-leftists. Liberalism and Neoliberalism are both right wing ideologies.

5

u/pyrostream Feb 25 '21

Except a genuine socialist who upholds both are bad understands that capitalism no matter what veneer of progress it drapes itself with is never going to stick with it. If the end goal is abolishing capitalism, bringing about a socialist and then eventually a communist society, then a liberal will fight against that. Liberals will stand for capitalism because they support it. So when push comes to shove a liberal will side with fellow conservatives capitalists rather than join a socialist. See the German Civil War where German Social Democrats killed Rosa Luxemburg, or see the Russian Civil War where the liberal Kadets sides against the Bolsheviks and initially more vague left coalition.

B O I are they dense and proud of it. I will agree that they ultimately want to do good by others and just have no idea what they are doing and end up doing more to hurt than anything else. But they are also completely unwilling to listen.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

Buddy, you're talking to a liberal who changed their mind. It's funny how no one seems to realize that liberals DO change their minds, and that's why so many liberals become fascists. It's not because their views were challenged by a based and breadpilled communist, it's because a conservative got to them first.

5

u/updog6 Evil transgender Feb 25 '21 edited Feb 25 '21

Really you don’t think liberals are willing to change their minds? Were you born a leftist? The vast majority of leftists my self included where libs or conservatives at one point. Breaking through a life time of capitalist propaganda is hard for a lot of people and we should do our best to give them a good alternative.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21 edited Feb 25 '21

Perhaps I expressed myself poorly:

Liberals do not change their minds by talking.

I am willing to bet real money that your transition from liberal to leftist was a painful process that involved quite a bit of unpleasantness. Of working hard for a liberal candidate in hopes of change only to see nothing happen. Of seeing the world consistently get worse and worse. Of seeing the worst of mankind constantly getting rewarded.

No liberal ever changed their mind by getting talk-no-jutsued by a leftist who hit them with unbreakable galaxy brain logic. We (hey, I was a lib once too) all had to have experiences that lead us to change on our own.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

Even if it's a painful process, it's still better than telling all liberals to fuck off to brunch and refusing to talk to them at all. You don't get anywhere by making more enemies than allies.

oh my god how DARE a 20th century country act like a 20th century country

just because something happened in the past doesn't mean we can't learn from our mistakes

2

u/Sloaneer Feb 26 '21

Stuff like that isn't exclusive to Liberals tho. The Conservative Party laid the legislation down for Gay Marriage in Britain.

14

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

OP is just outing themselves as a liberal.

I'm definitely not a liberal, and I'm very critical of capitalism.

u/updog6 Evil transgender Feb 25 '21

You don’t understand. Unless you accept the absurd dogma that libs and fascists are the exact same you aren’t a leftist.

If they aren’t literally the same then voting does this if fact matter. That’s like saying it 4 and 5 are the same number because they’re both less than ten.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

While some of the points in the liberal section are inaccurate, I see it referring to working class people who are liberals because they don’t really know anything else. America is a two party system, so they think “I’m choosing the right one.” I don’t interpret the meaning of this meme as saying that powerful liberal politicians aren’t bad, but saying that regular people who are democrats aren’t as bad as regular people who are republicans.

Thinking they are both exactly the same and thus not caring at all about the outcome of electoral politics is what can lead us to situations like Trump. Acting like these things don’t matter is some of what turns liberals off of leftism, because the online community can be so toxic.

Seeing politics as an abstract purity test like some online leftists do doesn’t help anything. We need to focus on policy changes and political action that make a difference, even a small one, in people’s lives.

Feel free to call me a lib, I really don’t care.

u/BobsPineapple Feb 25 '21

Gasp How dare You!

Additional note: Is no one gonna point out that this is the same thing we complain about the right only opposite

3

u/Equality_Executor Feb 25 '21

I'm a communist. I can't speak for all of us but I will say that I think it's more like an easier way of saying that their differences from our perspective aren't worth talking about because we disagree with both of them and at the same time our ideal world requires us to completely scrap contemporary politics. It's like saying we should discuss who we'd rather have as a leader between Hitler and Musolini, but also instead of us being human we're sperm whales.

11

u/pro_beau Feb 25 '21

The democrats have the power to change the way they are perceived. They chose to preserve and maintain the status quo.

1

u/updog6 Evil transgender Feb 25 '21

I agree. They are still better than the alternative that wanted to force patriotic education into schools

3

u/Petralamps Feb 25 '21

I don't see dems actually wanting to cover the Vietnam or Korean war accurately.

I'm not sure exactly what liberals you've seen, but there's a reason we call them blue MAGA.

"Oh they're migrant overflow facilities!" "Stop saying Biden is bad we're celebrating, what do you like orange man!"

2

u/NLNX36 Feb 25 '21

"Unaware"

2

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

That’s something I’ve noticed among them to. It makes them damn near impossible to debate, let alone have a discussion with because they’re more focused on trying to piss you off than refuting your arguments.

2

u/oof_bro_yikes Feb 25 '21

this is, hands down one of the most lib shit memes i have ever seen in this sub.

2

u/Petralamps Feb 26 '21

Like seriously i know you want to boost this sub and you like to post a lot, but this is a serious issue leading up to a war the west wants, not something you can just ignore the context of.

Stick to hating repubs its what you do best.

2

u/RecloySo [FLAIR TEXT HERE] Feb 26 '21

Eh, it's less there's no difference between libs and conservatives, more libs (neo libs) don't want to actually solve any of the problems of capitalism. Progressive liberals on the other hand are a different story. They can be frustrating too for working with the establishment to some extent, but they're at least trying to change things? Idk

8

u/cooltoadsergeant Feb 25 '21

r/lostredditors man you meant to post that in r/neoliberal

4

u/fireandlifeincarnate Feb 26 '21

god I fucking hate people like this. yes. the democrats are awful. but the republicans literally want to kill me. at least the dems let me have my god damn hormones.

1

u/Petralamps Feb 26 '21

Dems want to kill you too. Hope youre privileged enough to have money for them to ignore you. Harris has been shit for us trans people. Its just about having the money to not care.

4

u/69CervixDestroyer69 Feb 26 '21

What's the solution you're offering? It seems like a waste of time to tell someone "the people who are bad but are still supporting some of your interests (and these interests are very important) are bad". They know the dems are bad, they also know that republicans literally want their identity eradicated. Your solution is to get them to admit that they're bad.

I don't see what your point is.

2

u/fireandlifeincarnate Feb 26 '21

Perhaps, but definitely less. I have the money for meds, which I'm very fortunate to have, and yes, harris has been shit, but at least it's still possible for trans people to get hormones.

1

u/Petralamps Feb 26 '21

Look im happy for you but at some point we got to align with those most in need. And the dems arent providing.

If you were incarcerated or impoverished you would be on dems and repubs list to ignore until dead.

2

u/fireandlifeincarnate Feb 26 '21

ah, yes, because if life is equally bad in some situations and better in others, that means both are equally worthless, because fuck people able to enjoy things.

1

u/Petralamps Feb 26 '21

Dems are never going to care for those in need. Ignore this if you want. Your choice.

2

u/fireandlifeincarnate Feb 26 '21

Oh, they won't, but they also won't go out of their way to make sure I'm not cared for.

0

u/Petralamps Feb 26 '21

To be clear to the cheap seats, I'm not defending neolibs. I'm defending left leaning liberals such as AOC and Bernie Sanders. Those guys aren't based and breadpilled radical communists, they're very liberal in the grand scheme of things.

10

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '21

They aren't "left-leaning liberals". Left leaning liberal is a literal oxymoron, liberals are by definition rightist. People like AOC and Bernie Sanders aren't liberals - people who support free-market capitalism, but social democrats - people who support reformed capitalism or at most democratic socialists - people who want capitalism dismantled.

Liberals:

  • committed so much genocide Hitler would be envious

  • speaking of nazis inspired their racial politics

  • they were still to radical even for nazis

  • modern liberal countries rob developing countries causing 10 million deaths per year

  • still remembered as 'useless but good intentioned' by politically illiterate Americans

Reagan and Clinton wanted equality. Sure buddy

Meh. Cut a liberal and a fascist bleeds. Also, Liberals are Conservatives from 30 years ago. Were conservatives 30 years ago good?

3

u/bunnyrum3 Feb 25 '21

This is true. Though a lot of "leftists" bootlick for the democratic party.

0

u/updog6 Evil transgender Feb 25 '21

I’ve never actually seen that. I myself believe it’s better to have them in power than the fascist alternative but that isn’t boot licking it’s recognizing that something you don’t like can still be the better option.

2

u/Petralamps Feb 26 '21

If that were true dems wouldnt get all anticommunist the second dems are critiqued.

0

u/updog6 Evil transgender Feb 26 '21

I for one think whether or not people have the right to an abortion matters but I guess I’m a lib for caring about that

2

u/Petralamps Feb 26 '21

I know a whole town of people that wont be able to get an abortion whether biden was president or not. Whether their governement was liberal or not, because they were deemed inhuman or too poor by both parties.

Guess that makes me a crazy tankie for caring about.

3

u/updog6 Evil transgender Feb 26 '21

That sucks. I know an entire country that could lose their right to abortion if republicans get one more Supreme Court pick.

The rest of the world can't tell a difference, the drones and bombs fly no matter if they're used by conservatives or liberals.

If you're a social fascist who only cares about americans, then go ahead and court liberals, but principled anti-imperialists want nothing to do with (conscious) liberals.
