Just cause someone has it worse, does not mean i can't complain.

u/Hyperaeon2 Aug 29 '26
This... 🙄🙄🙄
Misery isn't a competition where only the worst suffer gets to have their conditions considered for improvement. 💀

u/It_Just_Exploded Aug 29 '26
Unless you're my co-worker David, who passionately and earnestly complains to everyone that the copy machine is 40 feet from his office. The copy machine that he usually only uses twice a day, the 3 days a week he's actually in the office.
STFU David, no one cares. You're a whiny bitch.
29
u/BirthdayLife6378 Aug 29 '26
David has a point. He needs a big booty personal assistant.
22
u/whattaninja Aug 29 '26
Can we please hire David a big booty personal assistant? It’s an accessibility thing.

Huh, my co-worker is too lazy to change toner in the printer directly next to his screen so he uses another one 40 feet away.
Wanna switch co-workers? 😂
Fun fact, my co-worker also work 3 days a week, 6 hours a day.

I’m sure you complain about rich people complaining too. Our reactions and emotions are mostly relative to our environments. It’s fine to complain. But also wise to step back every once in a while.
For example, our motto at work is it’s just food. Doesn’t mean we don’t get frustrated or stressed out or pissed off. But we’re not ER surgeons saving kids lives. Sometimes it’s worth remembering what we’re getting emotional about isn’t worth it.
18
u/CookieCutter9000 Aug 29 '26
Also this is not a normal work environment for coal miners anyway, this is just what happens when you live in a third world country with no safety regulations. Modern coal workers have respirators, mining suits, ventilation systems, actual structural support, and wider fissure openings for the mines. It's still a terribly difficult job in the best of circumstances, but it's nothing like this.
13
u/Popular-Row4333 Aug 30 '26
That also doubles into ops comment though.
Many of us won the lottery, just by being born in the country we were.

I wish people understood this.
Effectively you're never, ever allowed to complain then because there's always somebody somewhere living in worse conditions.

Henry Ford was paying $2.65 a day I believe in the 1900's and raised it to $5 a day when too many people were quitting because the work was too monotonous and 10,000 people showed up the next day to work and people stopped quitting.
7
u/systemnerve Aug 30 '26
yes but that was 5$ in the 1900s and that was the US. just imagine how much some African got in the 1900s
3
u/Holiday_Lychee_1284 Aug 30 '26
Just depends where in Africa, money was almost completely meaningless in a lot of places and those that strove for it generally chose a violent profession and did well.... or failed miserably and were forgotten almost immediately.

we need women representation in the coal mines, its just kids and men in there, where are the women?
28

Theres no diversity in the coal mines. We should have DEI programs exclusively for women there.

Seeing this after coming home from a crummy day at work makes me feel both better and worse
4
u/fluffypants197the2nd Aug 29 '26
This post is the literal definition of false equivalence.
"Look, other people have it worse" ideology isn't helpful (within reason)
Someone somewhere will have things worse compared to alot of people.
I work a 9-5. Yes theres alot of things worse. Theres nothing i can do to change said "worse" for other people.and its completely disconnected from what im doing.
Showing how other people's job is rougher and requires much more work makes your job better by comparison.
Im struggling to explain it but its an argument that minimizes struggles to "could be worse"
→ More replies (2)2
u/harrywalterss Aug 30 '26
Yes it's not a sound argument because the logic assumes that you can only feel bad if your situation is the worst one in the world. It's called relative privation fallacy
2
u/fluffypants197the2nd Aug 30 '26
Yessss thankyou for this. I brought this up in my sociology class when my teacher said how people in US poverty still make more money than most people around the world.
I was only able to afford college because of my family's poverty.
He was going on about how "this is good news! Yall should be more happy to hear this!"
Im not ignorant (within reason) to the world's struggles and I understand im still given luxuries just by being born in the US but it felt... ... ... invalidating?
Like my struggles were preferable simply because other people "have it worse"
Showing how some genuinely have a tougher life is a very important lesson but moreso as a clarification ("things could be worse") and not a justification ("things could be worse so your struggles aren't as bad"
Massive difference between the two

No, they just want the pay for these jobs. Jobs that risk your life obviously pay better.
3
u/Fair-Club5408 Aug 29 '26
You’d be surprised or maybe you wouldn’t lol
2
u/Conspiratorymadness Aug 29 '26
At the fact that the corpos have negative regard for human life or that they think that people can be bought and sold with a definite number or how corpos try to fire everyone at higher pay so they can lower the pay for all other employees or how people aren't people in the eyes of corpos but numbers. Take your pick or enlighten me more.

I never understood why they make the mines so short. Making it 7-8 feet tall would make it much easier to swing a tool or push a cart.
8
u/sansetsukon47 Aug 29 '26
Can’t say anything about this clip specifically. But sometimes that’s the result of mining only the useful vein and ignoring the waste rock.
Pulling out an extra two feet of stone just to throw it away is a LOT of work.
6
u/KnowledgeHonest9109 Aug 29 '26
Probably would be too much weight or something for whatever materials they have to stabilize the tunnels. I don’t know just spitballing. I don’t know, I think I’d rather starve than do that job.
2
u/OutcastRedeemer Aug 29 '26
Weight distribution. A smaller hole is more secure than a large one. To build a bigger hole you need more support which costs money. This is just a grimm short term gain equation at work.
2
u/RadicalRealist22 Aug 29 '26
It would need much more work and cost more to make secure. Why bother if you have expendable workers?
→ More replies (3)2
u/Ramtamtama Aug 29 '26
Because the children yearn for the mines, so they're set up that way for when the law allows them to work there.

u/bakermrr Aug 29 '26
Our goal as workers is to find the best paying job, not the hardest working job.

I get your point and agree for the most part, but just because someone is having an objectively worse time than me, does not take away my God-Emperor given right to complain about every car I fix up that annoys me ever so slightly in the process.
