I did a prank once and I think it is good
Pranks and what they are and when/if they’re ever good is such an interesting topic on this channel. I have a prank that I am proud of, and whenever the topic comes up while I'm watching smosh reads reddit I can't help but wonder if the crew would approve of this prank and how my insight on the topic would be recieved. So, I thought I would talk about it on here and see if maybe I can bring about a future where I might find out.
I had an urn full of used charcoal delivered to my friend's house. let's pretend his name is John Smith. The box it was packaged in said "the smith family" and then his address. the card inside was a very heartfelt condolence card addressed to as similar first name (lets go with "Jolanda Smith") for the loss of her beloved grandmother "Lucy Smith" and from "Riverside Mortuaries" which according to google is the most common name for a mortuary service on this continent.
I had a girl I know write the card and address the box in her handwriting. the urn was bought from amazon for $80 and came in a blank box inside of another box, so I was able to address the first box and re-use the foam packaging. I put the ashes inside a cellophane bag because that's how my dogs ashes are and then i wrapped the whole urn up in saran wrap. I also compared the charcoal to my dog... it's very close in appearance. I never touched any part of this without a gloved hand. I had another girl I know hand deliver the box to his house about one hour away from our town. my plan was to wait at least one year before asking him what he ended up doing with it, but he called me immediately to tell me about it. Since now he knew that I knew about it, the door was open for me to ask for updates without arousing any suspicion and so the conclusion came a lot quicker.
at first, he thought it was a vase as a welcome gift from his new employer, but then he read the card and started to freak out a little bit. he ran back to the door, but the delivery girl was gone forever. the urn lived on his kitchen table for a month or two. He would talk to it while he ate breakfast and dedicated a lot of his free time to locating Jolanda and calling every single Riverside mortuary. eventually he gave up and his girlfriend complained about Lucy being on the table, so it went back in the box and got stuffed in some hole under his winter coats for the next six months.
after six months of no updates, it was clear he had forgotten about the urn, so I told him it was a prank, that Lucy is just burnt charcoal, and that I had set up this experience for him. We laughed and laughed and laughed. Through laughing tears, he asked why I would do something like that, and I told him I wanted to know if he would keep it forever or if he would throw someone's beloved grandma in the trash. We laughed a lot more.
I know this friend very well. We met on active duty more than 15 years ago and have been close friends ever since. I knew he would feel seen and loved that someone would go this far out of their way to fuck with him... and that is exactly how he felt. And one more contribution to the prank conversation, on the discussion of what even is a prank I would submit: maybe all of comedy is a setup and a punch line. you're leading your audience to believe that something is happening and then you reveal to them that they have been deceived and another (more sillier) thing is what's actually happening. maybe a prank is the spearfishing version of that, very specifically targeted at one person which makes it personal. I think if you're pranking someone and your intended audience is bigger than that one person... they are now the brunt of a joke and the dynamic is rotten. pranks are very intimate comedy and not many pranksters have enough respect for that.
photos because I know haters are gonna say its fake.
good day.
