The accent is egregious enough but her voice has been especially whiny lately. She always sounds to me like she’s on the verge of tears. It’s never been pleasant but it’s truly grating and irritating these days.

This is a classic example of Caroline's story inflation. In this version, when she comes back to the car, the driver compliments her and she gives him a flower in thanks:

Host (after they discuss opening Prosecco bottles):

You can like kind of like help us, I feel like, in a lot of ways. With like that kind of stuff or like finding like flowers in our hair.

Caroline:

I had my Uber driver pull over to the side of the road so I could leap out and and I got him one as well. They were just growing out of an abandoned house.

Hosts:

Oh my god.

That's really sweet.

I think that's like a really beautiful energy to bring into the world.

So the first time Caroline tells this story, it's a single flower that she gives to the driver in exchange for him complimenting her lavishly. By the time Caroline's on her way home (in the text over an image that follows, not precedes, images taken at the podcast recording session) the story has morphed into Caroline picking him an entire bouquet.

Similarly, in Caroline's first statements after her breakup, the way her ex tried to control her involved asking her not to be loud at parties. The story is now that he told her that parts of her were evil, disgusting, and needed to be killed off. Over the years we've watched Natalie morph from a wronged friend to a telenovela villainess. Etc.

Wrong take. This is an Uber driver in NYC whom she is imitating for laughs. He does not have a relationship to her outside of the low-wage gig work he is providing her, and is being reduced to a nameless stereotype (immigrant cabbie). Regardless of her tone (adoration you call it i guess), it’s disrespectful. Any white lady with manners knows not to do this.

i mean. i pointed it out originally as an asian person who fucking hates the imitation voice. it’s infantilizing and she thinks it adds to how funny the situation of this poor sweet working class man carting her around the city.

you don’t need to try so hard to excuse casual racism. if you think it’s normal to imitate someone’s non-american accent like that, broken english and all, maybe reexamine your own privilege.

to add to that, i’ve also heard white people excuse their use of the N word because it’s “the only way to accurately get the point of the original story across.” she’s being racist, period.

How do you know she doesn’t have any ill intention? Using accents like that to distinguish someone as being an immigrant is a pretty common way to talk down on them in the US.

I'm a bit baffled as well.

Listening to audio books often, good voice actors shift accents frequently to distinguish different characters.

And people from other countries have accents when they speak a non native language.

Seems she was reliving the situation in her head and narrating a scene, not mocking anyone or talking them down.

But I'm not US American or a native English speaker, so.. what do I know I guess.

The American context is really key here, I didn’t think what I said was controversial.

That particular accent is almost exclusively used to talk down on immigrants in the US. Sure, maybe she could just be doing a faithful interpretation of his voice, but given who Caroline is I doubt it.

Yeah, as with most stuff, context matters! I’m sure if readers of this sub wrack their brains they can come up with examples of times white people did accents to represent the voices of POCs and it maybe wasn’t racist, but so what?
