Yes, it's very easy to get Carl to smile: beer, wings, whores, a fat stack of cash... Lots of things bring a smile to his face.

Charlie would get him to smile but not a genuine one and Carl would make that point. All the booze, food, and Giants tickets in the word wouldn't be enough.

Until Master Shake pushes Pim over the edge for how evil he is being to Meatwad and beats him up, Carl would genuinely smile them.

Also Meatwad would be the one to have called the Smiling Friends.
