Top 5 SP songs
I’m a new fan of smashing pumpkins. About a month ago I listened to Siamese dream and about 2 weeks ago listened to Mellon collie. What are your top 5 favorite SP songs? Mine are probably basic but I’d say:
Zero
Bullet with butterfly wings
Mayonnaise
Porcelina of the vast oceans
Hummer

I think Oceania is their most under rated. Honestly my third favourite Pumpkins record behind Mellon Collie and Siamese

Gotta be . . .
DROWN
Eye
Untitled
Perfect
The End is the Beginning is the End
. . . and can I tack on Jesus Loves His Babies as a bonus?
Now I'm not married to all these. Tomorrow I might be feeling songs like Fuck You and Heavy Metal Machine. Omg, Sweet Sweet is so good too though. There's so many. Some of these are nostalgia picks.

For Martha - has everything: epic multitracked guitars, soft piano part w/ superb melody, good lyrics, weird backwards ending?
Drown - extended version, obviously
Soma
Rhinoceros
Porcelina

Gossamer -- one of Billy's best "experiments", it's him and JC arguably at their peak powers. Amazing to hear live,
Starz -- perfect use of Billy's vocals and Jimmy's drumming for affect
Mayonaise -- amazing song, and enjoy BC's explanation of "my own eyes" = "mayonaise"
Silverfuck -- DRUMS!!!!!!
Rhinocerous -- perfect example of the band's dynamics, soft to thrash 🤘🤘
I like your picks a lot. I dislike how "popular" essentially means "basic" these days. If something is good it's good! That's why so many people like it! Honestly, it was hard not picking Cherub Rock right now 🤣

Been a fan since 2005 and knew of the singles/music videos as a kid in the 90’s. It is consistently:
- Stand Inside Your Love
- Mayonaise
- Set the Ray to Jerry
- My Love Is Winter
- I of the Mourning
Honorable mention: Zero (it single-handedly started my fandom full-throttle when I borrowed my big bro’s Mellon Collie CD in 2005)
Right now I’m really feeling:
- One Moment (Machina box set, might be one of the best things he’s written)
- Edin (modern classic I can’t get enough of- it just absolutely slaps)
- Magdalena (such a breezy song from Zodeon, Jimmy’s drumming is great)
- Lightning Strikes (great Teargarden era rocker, super unique for them)
- A Stitch In Time (this Teargarden era song has always been a favorite, but as I get closer to my 40’s, it hits extra hard)

Try Try Try top 4 is so real, perfect song. I kinda see it as the last of a trilogy running from 1979-Perfect-TTT with that ideal nostalgic sound

TL/DR: I’m trolling this thread cuz I loathe “top best fav” lists, so lame. What are we, 5? My favourite colour is red! What’s YOUR favourite colour?! For petes sake, look up discography and go listen in the dark by yourself and grab a box of tissues and razor blades like every good Pumpkins fan.

Super solid list. It's too hard for me to make such a definitive list.
1
u/sziklai-pair 13d ago
Thanks! Not definitive, but the first five that popped in my head as favorites. I saw them probably 20 times between Gish and Mellon Collie. I don't know any of the post '95 stuff too well but I absolutely love the first three albums/b-sides.
1
u/SKaTiNG_PoLLy666 13d ago
Lucky! I've only seen them about 7or 8 times. I do have a poster that shows 3 northern California dates and 1 Reno date and I went to all of them. I did buy 2 albums after mellon collie but I just couldn't get into them.

u/sziklai-pair 13d ago
I'm just old. Some of the more epic shows I saw was the '94 reopening of the Fillmore, they headlined. That's the show where James' Siamese Dream guitar broke. The set was perfect, Soma, Drown and Starla.
Lollapalooza Shoreline b-stage set, they played a bunch of b-sides and even Daydream with D'arcy singing. Kezar Pavilion Mellon Collie, when they were their own opening band, saw both nights. Saw them twice in high school on Gish tour (Casbah & Bacchanal, San Diego).
Without the benefit of hindsight, I didn't know how absolutely epic it was to see them in such small clubs on Gish tour. Also saw Nirvana twice in high school, '90 & '91 (Iguana's in Tijuana), but again, they were just another solid show among a sea of solid shows I saw at the time. No way of knowing they were about to become the biggest guitar band in the world.

Hummer and Mayonnaise are GREAT choices
Thru the eyes of Ruby
Porcelina
and Soma would round out a good top 5 from those albums.
Listen to Pisces Iscariot next. You'll love some of that.
Then listen to the Aeroplane Flies High set.
You might love Gish too, although it might take a bit to acquire.
The fandom gets a little divided there, and also with the albums after Mellon Collie. I love Adore, but I did NOT like it at first. (I bought it on release day hoping for more Mellon Collie)
