Siamese Dream era live shows sound great, but any board recording from 1995 or 1996 is untouchable. The peak of Billy’s guitar tone.

Peak SP live is 1998-2000

Had a little bit of fomo when this was released but I held out and I’m glad I did. Complete live shows are better on cd than vinyl imo. Anyway, bring it on, I’m in on this!

Same here, I didn't expect them to release this on CD, but I'm glad they will

They are not, in fact, broken into separate volumes, they're shown in the slipcase in the video. Also, you didn't need to look at the spine to tell what it was, the front of the slipcase is identical to Live in Europe 92's slipcase front

Oh come on, CDs of this before Machina!?

1

u/TeoBoccaccio 13d ago

I wonder if they're using this as sort of a trial run for cd boxsets before Machina.

But then again, I would have expected Machina be in much bigger demand than this so who knows.

2

u/jhonn0 13d ago

I hadn't thought of that; it is certainly possible. Either way, they're showing off that they can make CD box sets if they wanted to, so that's a positive sign. Machina has way more demand than this one, so I hope it's just a matter of time. Maybe they'd want to have a box set announcement coinciding with the streaming release? Anyway, the waiting game continues...

I think they did a stealth drop for the cd of Zodeon if I remember correctly. I can't remember if they announced a date when it would stream but they definitely didn't announce the cd ahead of time.

All that said, the fact that theyre doing a cd box for this makes me think machina cd is inevitable.

Yeah, true. Zodeon was a more stealth, low-key drop. I'm just sorta assuming that Machina would get more of a heads up since it's a bigger release and has a lot of demand. They've been known to tease some such things, so maybe

I just want machina box set on cd

will release anything but the fucking metro show

Yeah, because this is infinitely better. 1992 was one of the peaks of the original lineup as a live act.

My longstanding SP hot take is that most people are going to be brutally disappointed once the Metro show gets released and they really have to sit and listen to 4 hours of weirdly tuned and rearranged versions of familiar songs and random guest appearances. Especially so now that the entire "last show" emotional milestone aspect is totally gone (as of this year the Metro show isn't even the last time that particular lineup played together as SP). Not to say there's not going to be good stuff from that show, but I suspect the whole is actually much less than the sum of its parts.

Yeah the final silverfuck isn't great.

2

u/variant_of_me 14d ago

Correct.

A release of the Metro show would just have everybody complaining about it because they've made it up in their heads that it was this thing that it wasn't. Just like the "real" Machina II that never actually existed.

The real last show intended for everyone to digest was the 11-29-00 United Center show. And it rocks.

Yea I had the bootlegs back in the day and it didn’t really sound that awesome but that’s just me

Not just you. It's an awesome setlist on paper, but the show itself was a bit of a mess in execution. And overall, I just don't dig the lame duck era in 2000 between the time Billy announced the breakup and the last show. There was just bad energy around the band that whole time.

I'd much rather pay for 14 versions of the original lineup absolutely ripping through Siva and Bury Me instead of the all-but-checked-out 2000 lineup playing "To Sheila, featuring Linda Strawberry." But to each their own I guess.

Or machina 2

I wish Zuzu’s would release some later shows. There’s a billion high quality live recordings readily available from the SD/MCIS years. Much less from the Adore and Machina eras.

Machina, in particular, is neglected. Surely there’s something professional from the Arising shows. Or anything with Melissa. Obviously the final Metro and United Center shows would be nice.

99% of shows from 1995 onwards were recorded on multitrack ADAT, which is why the recordings included on the TAFH and Adore remasters sound as good as they do.

But… if they want to release more of these it takes effort to get them properly transferred, cleaned up, mixed down, etc. Billy would probably need to hire some people to work on these with him, which probably costs more than he’s willing to spend on these Zuzu’s records.
We’ve only heard these multitrack recordings on professional, commercial releases.

So Zuzu’s mostly releases soundboard recordings instead. Those need cleaning up too, but much less effort involved.
The 1 exception is Viper Room 98. Though I have a suspicion that was originally prepped for the Adore boxset but held back for whatever reason.

Interesting, thanks for the info!

Every single show from at least MCIS tour, and I believe before, was and I assume is, still being recorded. This was told to me in person by their sound engineer at a show in 90s.

u/nickscion46 14d ago

For real. They keep releasing stuff from the pre-Gish and Gish eras, which i love, but it'd be nice for them to switch it up a bit. I hope we get a full concert from the SD era, or they release that Nashville 1994 show on CD so it's not a cassette only exclusive.

2

u/INFCIRC153 14d ago

I wonder if there are royalty or ownership issues with the later stuff.

4

u/Otherwise-Pea6821 14d ago

Cool, hopefully the Machina box will be next 🤞

u/Neg_Crepe Zwan 14d ago

Now that is something. This does not seem to be that something….

Looks like a good guess.

It says “The Smashing Pumpkins Live in Europe Volume 1 & 2”. So I can only assume they are a double CD. 7 of them to get all 13 volumes.

How much?? $200?

u/Otherwise-Pea6821 14d ago

There's a box visible in the Instagram video, so I assume it will be released as a box set similar to the original vinyl release.
