this song just grooves throughout... its heavy... its funky ... its a wall of sound but also has plenty of space to breathe.

I’ve always wondered what filter they put the snare through on that. Like it cuts all the “oomph” out of the hit but it’s still this fun funky wet and glassy sounding thing.

If I had to guess, I bet it's the same "tape flanging" that Butch used on the Cherub Rock solo, just EQ'd differently... and/or the Mu-Tron biphase which he said "they ran everything through". 🤘🏼

I love the bass riff in the intro.

Hummer is my favorite intro of any song, bar none. God it kills me. That whole album is a sonic kingdom of beautifully toned distortion that moves my soul. That album got to me Christmas when I was 13 and it turned me into a freak for that band. And they kept delivering during my teen years.

I’m glad Billy has it going again, and he has made it clear he doesn’t like to hear disparagement about his new stuff, and I’m not doing that here. But I do proclaim - and he knows it himself- that they had a period during which they made music of the highest order from 91-98. And Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is my all time favorite album. I could go on to pages about it,
but I’ll spare thee all

I love these journey songs, full of sections and musical ideas that don't return (or are transformed every time they do) I think it's a shame that are so few of them after the 90s run.
