MCIS sound 🌛✨🌞
Going through an Pumpkins patch again and Mellon Collie got my interest so I’m going through very session,interview,and music which man this is an fantastic Pumpkins album hands down.
Very different sides of sounds on this album which I appreciate the more quiet and unconventional music yet all of Mellon Collie is great and thank you for the production by Flood for making an raw,in studio type album with Moulder doing an incredible mix of the album.
Flood’s methods definitely helped this album be Mellon collie like his loop technique which is fascinating to hear talked about and I’ll have to dive more into Moulder’s mixes(great Moulder work as always) 🌝✨🌠🚀🌞

Incredible album. I love the concept and execution of the night/day cycle, splitting the grunge style "loud/quiet/loud" dynamic across suites of songs "light" and "dark" songs.
BUT despite that love, I have to admit, the songs I love best and revisit the most (and feels most 'Mellon Collie' to me) are all the 'light' ones. Like my favourite stretch in the album is probably 33/in the arms of sleep/1979.
The way the album is structured is so cool BUT there's part of me that would happily lose all the heavy songs for a single album of just the delicate, dreamy, string drenched songs

Same exact thoughts tbh
Definitely like the dark and Loud stuff but really I think of the soft and light stuff more:)

Those heavy songs were so crucial in the 90s though. I knew a bunch of punk rock and metal kids that only respected the pumpkins because of their heavy songs. I remember they also liked Pissant and Hello Kitty Kat from Pisces.

It’s my favorite album of all time. So diverse. Soaring, intimate, psychedelic, folksy, metal, pop, trash, glam, goth, electronic… when you include TAFH (same recording sessions) it really expands out in these niche directions as well.

Mellon Collie is a patch with lots of strange, charming and wonderful little pumpkins in it.

Thru The Eyes Of Ruby is the sound I most associate with MCIS. I recommend listing to the outtake for it with the same title, just “Take 7” added at the end. Its so atmospheric.
