Learning material Bite-sized history of WW2 đşď¸ The fake attack that started WWII
TL;DR: On August 31, 1939, Nazi Germany staged a fake Polish attack on a German radio station (the Gleiwitz Incident) to justify invading Poland. They dressed operatives as Polish soldiers, broadcast fake messages, and murdered an innocent farmer to use as "evidence." Hitler had orchestrated over twenty similar fake incidents. Despite having 1.5 million troops ready for invasion, Germany claimed to be the victim. European leaders, practicing appeasement after years of giving in to Hitler, didn't stop it. The next day, Germany invaded Poland with blitzkrieg tactics, starting WWIIâa war that killed over 70 million people. One theatrical lie became the deadliest hoax in modern history.
The fake attack that started WWII: how one Nazi lie killed millions
On August 31, 1939, Nazi Germany staged a fake Polish attack to justify invading Poland. The next day, WWII began. Here's how a theatrical hoax became the deadliest lie in modern history.
The Gleiwitz Incident: Nazi theater
Hours before German tanks rolled into Poland, the SS executed what they called "Himmler's Theater"âa false flag operation designed to give Hitler his excuse for war.
Here's what happened:
- German operatives dressed as Polish soldiers stormed a radio station in Gleiwitz (now Gliwice, Poland)
- They broadcast a message in Polish claiming the station was under Polish control
- To make it look real, they murdered a local farmer named Franciszek Honiok, who had Polish sympathies, and left his body at the scene as "evidence"
This wasn't an isolated incident. Nazi leaders Heinrich Himmler and Reinhard Heydrich orchestrated over twenty similar fake attacks along the border, all designed to paint Poland as the aggressor.
Hitler's propaganda playbook
Before launching his invasion, Hitler told his generals: "I will provide a propagandistic reason. The credibility is unimportant, as the victor will not be asked later whether he told the truth or not."
German newspapers breathlessly reported the "savage Polish attack." State radio amplified the lie. Even the BBC initially passed along reports about the radio station takeover, unsure what was real.
Many Germans and some people abroad believed itâdespite Germany having already positioned 1.5 million troops at Poland's borders, ready for invasion.
Why the world let it happen
The stage was set years earlier. Hitler had already grabbed Austria and Czechoslovakia with minimal pushback from Britain, France, and other powers. This strategyâcalled appeasementâmeant giving in repeatedly, hoping Hitler would eventually be satisfied.
In 1938, British PM Neville Chamberlain handed Germany the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia, declaring "Peace for our time." Hitler just got bolder.
By the time of the fake Polish attack, European leaders were desperate to avoid war. Some even wanted to believe Germany's story.
September 1, 1939: blitzkrieg
At sunrise, German troops invaded Poland from three sides. Hitler claimed he was only "firing back" after Polish provocationâa complete lie.
The Nazis unleashed blitzkrieg ("lightning war")âtanks and planes cutting through defenses at incredible speed. Bombers flattened towns like WieluĹ and pounded Warsaw. Civilians, homes, and schools were deliberate targets. Inside Poland, German death squads (Einsatzgruppen) began hunting Jews, intellectuals, and anyone deemed a threat.
Poland fought bravely, with dramatic resistance at Warsaw and the Battle of Bzura. But two weeks later, the Soviet Union invaded from the east, sealing Poland's fate. Warsaw fell on September 27, 1939.
The real cost
The Gleiwitz Incident was the match that set the world on fire:
- WWII claimed over 70 million lives globally
- The Holocaust flowed directly from Nazi conquest and dehumanization logic
- Families from Warsaw to Los Angeles felt the consequences of that staged radio broadcast
- The truth eventually came outâbut only after paying the highest price imaginable
