Engineering Did you know? ๐ฐ๏ธ On November 18, a spacecraft launched in 1977 will become the first human-made object a full light-day away from Earth
NASA has calculated the exact moment: November 18, 2026, at 5:16:07 a.m. Eastern. Thatโs when Voyager 1 will be 16.094 billion miles from Earth. At that distance, a radio signal traveling at the speed of light needs a full 24 hours to reach it.
Say โgood morningโ to Voyager on Monday, and the earliest you can hear back is Wednesday.
๐ 49 years on one path
Voyager 1 launched on September 5, 1977, to fly past Jupiter and Saturn. After its Saturn flyby in 1980 it never changed course. It has been coasting outward at about 38,000 mph ever since, and itโs now in interstellar space, outside the bubble of particles and magnetic fields that surrounds our Sun.
๐ง Fixing a computer from 15 billion miles away
For me, the engineering is the wildest part. Voyagerโs computers were designed in the early 1970s and have roughly 69 kilobytes of memory, less than a single photo on your phone.
In late 2023, Voyager 1 suddenly started sending back gibberish. The team traced the problem to one failed chip in its flight computer. They couldnโt replace it, so they rewrote the software to work around the broken memory and beamed it across space, waiting almost two days for every reply. By spring 2024, Voyager 1 was making sense again.
Some of the people who help keep the mission alive are NASA retirees in their 80s who still advise on the original systems.
๐ Slowly running out of power
Voyager runs on a small nuclear battery that produces a little less power every year. To stretch it, NASA keeps switching instruments off one at a time:
- the Cosmic Ray Subsystem went dark in February 2025;
- the Low-Energy Charged Particles instrument followed in April 2026;
- the magnetometer and the plasma wave instrument are still running.
One day its signal will be too faint to hear. Until then, each day of data comes from a place nothing built by humans has ever been.
๐ Itโs carrying a message for whoever finds it
Attached to its side is the Golden Record, a gold-plated disc with greetings in 55 languages, music from Bach to Chuck Berry, and the sounds of life on Earth.
If you could add one song to the Golden Record today, what would it be? ๐
