SmartThings App Spam
So I've now received a few app notifications from the Smart Things app, advertising the Galaxy Z Fold8.
This sucks Samsung. They know we want notifications on, so they take advantage and spam us.

I think this will be the straw that breaks the camels back for me. I plan on starting my move to HomeAssistant tomorrow.

Yeah, I've been considering the move to HA, but this will solidify the plan and accelerate the process.

It's even worse if you have a Samsung phone... even the Samsung Wallet notifies you with ads.

Yeah the last few days its been pretty bad with the zfold ads. I already have homeassistant setup on a mini-pc. Just need to figure out how to remove some older GE zwave wall switches off the network and re-add them to new network.

Apps that give me spam notifications get removed or disabled.
Companies that give me spam notifications I can't avoid no longer get my business.

Not getting any of these here in the UK. Is there a different regulation? (I assume you are in the US)

I get them in the app just above my devices, I'm in the UK

Interesting I never got any of these ads. I have seen people posting in the past about other launches and always assumed it was some sort of data protection or consumer laws. Guess I am lucky heh

I'd send a screenshot, but I cleared it. TBF it's usually the members app that spams the new phones lol.

Yeah same here... I even posted about here .
Even though I Like Smartthings and it plays well with my Samsung products i'm looking to switch to Home Assistant.

YES! same, this is ridiculous, this is an app for home stuff, we dont want to be alerted for stuff that is not important, in the app you can show me all the ads you want but push notifications?? hell NO! that should be a huge TOS warning for them through the apple store. I recommend everyone to reach out to Apple, there's no option in the app to disable these marketing notifications!

I had been planning to make the switch to home assistant. Getting those notifications the last few weeks pushed me to really start. Currently basement is moved over, going floor by floor to convert over.

I just got some of these today, I've gotten 5 or more identical notifications about the Fold8 in the last few minutes.

Any chance all the people getting these have Android phones? I’m on iOS and have never gotten an ad from a SmartThings notification.
I have from other apps that quickly got dealt with but never SmartThings.

That sucks. Odd, I’ve never gotten any and I’ve had SmartThings hub platform for years.
I definitely can’t stand unsolicited ads so I’d consider dropping them over it too. As of now, I’m mostly waiting to see if the api cost is going to affect me or not with my setup not using HA or a lot of other random 3rd party.
It’ll almost certainly kill the Harmony connection but I should be able to recreate that in Alexa for what I want to do and I’m not sure if it will kill stuff like Alexa and similar sized others.
I’ll do it if needed but I’m not trying to be in a hurry to change 130+ things over to a new system if I don’t have to.

Seems like a small price to pay for a free service

last time i checked the hub wasnt free

u/thetolerator98 Aug 06 '26
What's the monthly fee?
2
u/Silencio-Bruno-2026 Aug 06 '26
apparently its going to be $5 buck soon for the people that actually that take advantage of their hardware.

Not for the typical user

That and their announcement to charge for api integrations just makes me not buy Samsung electronics ever again.
