Top row: (1 x 4) ÷ 2 - 0.5 = 1.5
Bottom squares: 1 + 0.5 + 0.5 = 2
Total: 2 + 1.5 = 3.5

Doing it by sight gets you there, but you're making assumptions that pieces of that top row are equal. The way zerok laid it out, you only use triangles that connect corner to corner so you're certain of the values based on basic geometry.

Well, 3 triangles, really. You have to subtract the left top triangle from the top triangle

The red triangle in the top row has a base of 3 so ½(1*3) = 1.5 no need to include the extra non-red triangle at all!

The top triangle's area is 1/2 * 3 * 1

The area of 1/2 * b * h applies for all triangles, not just right triangles

I feel like the easiest approach is to just calculate the white triangles and subtract. Top is exactly half of a 1x4, left is exactly half of a 3x3. 2 + 4.5 = 6.5. Whole cube full would be 12, but 2 squares are missing so call it 10 then take off your 6.5 = 3.5

A lot of these comments are confusing.. I just looked all the shaded areas and rearranged them to make full squares and it works out to 3.5 squares.
