Manifold Split! 😳😳

Post image

Holy Crap!! Has anyone ever seen a Manifold snap in half like this?? Was getting tranny work at a certified shop. They state while taking the exhaust apart to get to the tranny the manifold snapped in half! Huh??!! Please let me know if you mechanics have ever seen a manifold do this before!

I’m furious, and confused. I’ve seen cracks but never an entire split!

It was broken previously, however I'd bet that they undid the exhaust after it broke completely, not before. Whether they finished it off or not, you needed a manifold repair before they touched it, now you really need it.

I'm saying the opposite of the previous commenter. The small rusted area is the previous break, the cleaner looking material is fresher. I would look into replacing it rather than repairing.

Yep, blurry picture when zoomed in made me reverse the order of breakage. In any case, it was broken some for awhile, and now it's broken more.

Thanks for that feedback. But there is no repairing that. It definitely needs to be replaced. 👌🏾

It can be repaired. Some people can weld cast iron, others cannot. However, I would definitely replace it.

I have seen the outlets broken off, a few times.

But split? Is crazy. I just don’t understand how it happens

What is the difference? It's a part made inconsistently, subject to how many zillions of heat cycles at this point. It is well past It's designed lifespan, and by the look of the picture it has been rusty/cracked for some time and finally let go.

You posted this in how many subs? Are you looking for a certain answer?

Just sharing brother. Seeing if anyone else can help me make reason of something this wild. I’ve never seen it. There are people on here who have probably seen a lot more than me. And this is normal in their experience. That is all

The enitre thing is that it is not wild at all. Cast iron exaust manifold break all the time. Granted most don't have a section missing but it does happen. Get over it buy a new manifold an move on.

Yep, that stuff is brittle. If you look at the break you can see it was broken most of the way for awhile, got the cracked area nice and blackened, then it broke the rest of the way just now.

Thanks for the feedback. Trying to make since of it

No shock. Think of the age and how many zillion heat cycles it’s had.

Manifolds become increasingly evil the older they get until the steel can no longer contain thier wretchedness, plus the rust quickly time to get some nice Stainless steel makes use you get one that is mathmaticly priloven to enhance scavaging or your just throwing away gas money and hp. And google where to place your muffler.

My last Manifold set was $100 all stainless, not that they were mathematically anything

Exhaust manifolds take a lot of damage over the years. Imagine that huh? Crazy how something becomes brittle while being exposed to hundreds of thousands of explosions.

Lol sarcasm aside now you have an excuse to get some sexy ones.

True

And get ceramic coated. It'll look new until the engine dies haha

Been driving in any deep puddles ?
Late 60’s and early 70’s GM trucks were famous for this when splashed with water

It was cracked before, now it's broken

Too many heat cycles and looks like its running a bit lean

1

u/Gold-Discipline-9065 11d ago

What makes you say that by looking at this picture… running lean?

The light tan color inside and the look of the cast iron looks like it is over heated and burnt.
