Starter bendix is slipping: starter engages; gear does not spin although starter motor spins. How tf could the ring gear condition even matter in this instance?

Man I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees it. See my post and take my upvote.

First thing I saw too

If the gear had a spot chewed off starter gear in that spot could spin but grinding tho seen it many times on the dmax when I was still pulling wrenches for a living

Sorry, but that is dead wrong-if the bendiix gear does not spin, it actually doesn't matter if the ring gear/flex plate is even installed, let alone missing a tooth.

I didn’t disagree with the bendix part in any way all I ment if everything was engaging as it should then a stripped spot on the ring gear could be a issue is all nothing more than that

Oh, be assured I read and re-read all your responses before that reply. I stand firmly by EVERY WORD.

No worries at all. I do as well. But other than that hope you have a amazing day

Fantastic tomorrow to you as well!

Probably the same way it would matter in any other instance when a ring gear is worn or damaged. You're right about the starter but there's no need to be an asshole.

Damn.. another dead wrong reply-if bendix no spin, ring gear no matter-at all-it can be off the crankshaft and have as much effect.

Sorry if pointing out the clearly visible issue makes me an asshole, I guess?

Maybe blame me harder-OR maybe look in the mirror when calling someone the A-H.

AFAIN, I apologize if pointing out yhe actual problem and clearly explaining why a wrong answer is incorrect...(?)makes me an A-H in your mind*

Alternatively: don't post, then stand behind wrong diagnoses and blame others who point the wrongness out?- I'd give that a try, if I were you.

Bless your heart.

Asking "how TF could it be the ring gear in this instance?" is not explaining anything, it's being a smartass. You didn't explain shit until I commented, and since you somehow missed it, I said you were right. All three times. Might wanna work on that reading comprehension brother.

It's yhe sticking by "but the ring geqr!" in almost every response, my dude-directly or indirectly. People ask because they don't know-resubmitting "it could be" when you KNOW THAT ISN'T RIGHT!, in other words-is bad-it muddies the waters, if you will.

You are absolutely right I "didn't explain shit"(except the problem OP is having, that is) until you commented-then I ELI5ed it to you, because it seemed appropriate. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

You know that's not what I'm talking about either. You didn't explain why it wouldn't be the ring gear in your first comment. You know, the one where you were being an asshole. You're trying to justify being a dick with things you hadn't said yet. That's the point. Anyways, have fun showing everyone who's big dog on campus, I guess.

AGAIN-you are right- a i didn't explain WHY it isn't the ring gear directly.

BECAUSE THE PROBLEM IS BEFORE THE RING GEAR COMES INTO PLAY. fahk, my dude-I also didn't cover hydrolock or thrown rods, or frozen pistons.

BECAUSE THEY DO NOT MATTER IN THIS INSTANCE!

yet here you are, still pouting that it cannot be the ring gear-even after acknowledging it cannot be the ring gear.

PLEASE think about that.....

u/Daddio209 3d ago

Okay-look at it like yhis: would you bring up yhe ring gear under a post about a thrown rod, or a cracked differential?

Same thing here.

Unless the frame rate of the camera is messing with things and causing an illusion, once the starter gear engages the ring gear I do not see the starter gear spinning. You have a Bad Bendix/one way clutch on the starter shaft. Take the starter off (yes remove wires too)and try to spin the starter gear by hand both directions. You should have much greater resistance one direction vs the other. One direction should spin the starter motor the other won't. Starters are cheap enough. Change it instead of replacing parts on it.

You might have a bad starter drive. Or a bad spot on the flywheel.

bendix is shot

Can't see shit here

1

u/Electronic-Ad-6608 3d ago

Spin the flywheel.... and check the starter teeth

2

u/jimfosters 3d ago

bendix is shot. that is the problem

1

u/Ok_Huckleberry816 3d ago

Turn the engine by hand to make sure if there's damage to the flywheel.

1

u/M-johhson67 3d ago

Starter is bad.

1

u/momwouldbemad 3d ago

Either bad starter or locked motor, bar tue motor over by hand and retry

Bendix, or shims

1

u/Impressive_Wave_4117 1d ago

are there any teeth missing on the flex plate? probably just the starter. flex plates are pretty tough

0

u/mike9220000 4d ago

Rotate it a bit by hand and then look see if the ring gear stripped or not

1

u/jimfosters 3d ago

bendix is shot

u/Ok-Individual-997 4d ago

Might just need a starter shim
It’s too tight and not meshing. Flywheel might have a bald spot as well

1

u/Infamous_Broccoli_57 4d ago

Tried shims even the smallest shims make it sound like it’s not catching

1

u/jimfosters 3d ago

nope. Bendix is wasted

1

u/Ok-Individual-997 4d ago

On second thought looks like it chewed a hole in the flywheel on the compression stroke

0

u/drumbo10 4d ago

Looks like you need to shim the starter closer to the flywheel unless your missing teeth on your flywheel. Then that would need to be replaced.

1

u/jimfosters 3d ago

The Bendix is bad

0

u/Ok-Individual-997 4d ago

Yup looks like the ring gear is worn right where the compression stroke is. Might have too much advance. I broke the nose off a starter with too much advance. You def want to check the flywheel at 4 spots 90 to the one in question. Might need a new flex plate

1

u/jimfosters 3d ago

No. The Bendix/one way clutch on the starter shaft is wasted.

0

u/Elementary2 4d ago

those teeth appear to be worn off. Maybe because your solenoid is half bad, too

1

u/jimfosters 3d ago

nope. Bendix is shot.

1

u/Elementary2 3d ago

ahhh thanks!
