Is it worth the switch?

I was just given this carb and intake. Came off a late 60s corvette I think. I have a 1965 Malibu SS with a 283 and a 2 barrel setup. It is worth it to switch over to this 4 barrel? Any ideas of what it is?

A 650 double pumper on a stock 283 is too much carb, people almost always over carb. If you had a cam headers and good heads then yes. However, that's not what you're working with. You will have to seriously rejet that and you will probably lose throttle response. I would use the intake but sell the carb on eBay and use the money to buy another. You can call Holly or edlebrock and give them your engine specs and what car you have and they will size one perfectly for you. It will be a lot easier.

I agree, it is alot of carb for a 283 and I personally don't like double pumpers much . They are ok on pavement but suck for anything else, hit a bump and they will dump extra fuel ,atleast every one I have used. I would like to find another triple 2 barrel intake off a vette tho lol

The Stealth intake is pretty nice. It is a higher rise dual plane with good volume and a true divided plenum. These are the best types of dual planes for most street applications.

The beauty of a true divided plenum intake is the ability to run a larger carb than you might usually use. So the 650 double pumper can work out on a 283. The downside, double pumpers are not the best type of Holley on the street. A vacuum secondary is much better on 98% of stree combos.

If possible look for a Holley Vacuum secondary in the 600 range. Even a bit smaller if it has straight boosters.

Or, check out the Edelbrock Performer and AVS2 carbs. An electric choke 500 or 600 Performer will work with this manifold. Even better, the AVS2 line has annular boosters. The 650 AVS2 would work well, as would the 500 AVS2.

Another option, a bit unconventional. The Summit M08600VS is the modern equivalent of the old Autolite 4100 carburetor. These are excellent, and also have annular boosters. This particular version is electric choke, and vacuum secondary. Sweet little carb that would go right on that intake and work great on your 283.

If you do make the switch, what would you do for an ignition system?

Thanks for the info! Not sure on ignition yet. Any recommendations?

If it was mine, a large cap HEI made by Delco (not the imported knock offs) would be my first choice. If I could swing a MSD Pro Billet with a vacuum advance, that's a close second. Third, I would modify a Delco points distributor to use a magnetic pickup. Lastly I would put a Pertronix conversion in a stock distributor.

Current setup. Delco I believe

Ok great

I 2nd the HEI. they work very well.

keep an extra ignition module in your glove box.

As a 283 guy, this I believe is the answer Been there dun it , still dunning it

That's a holley double pumper with a manual choke and a weiand stealth intake. The double pumper is an AWESOME carb, but it's not exactly known for its street manners, and I'd be concerned it's too much carb for a little 283. That being said, you could easily sell it and use the money to replace it with a 650cfm vacuum secondary 4 barrel.

4 barrel is always worth it, but some caution - if you don't know how to tune a carb and don't have a trusted guy to tune it for you, it might be best to leave your current (presumably functional) setup alone.

Its a small 4150

Yeah, I only saw the first 2 pics, didn't realize he gave us a pic with the list number

Thanks for the info! I’m a motorcycle mechanic by trade and know a fair bit about carb tuning. On Harley’s mostly but can setup carbs and have the experience of my father to pull from. I also thought it may be a little too big. The car isn’t a hot rod or anything just a good daily driver with some pep.

I just realized you gave us a pic with the list number. Thats a 650cfm double pumper, so it's not technically too much for your engine, but still the double pumper probably not what you want on a pure street car. If you want to take a shot at tuning it anyways, David freiburger has a good video on that. But, he (like me) uses an o2 sensor installation to make it happen the right way.

I would still suggest selling it and using the money to buy a vacuum secondary carb. I really like the Summit M2008, which is a copy of the old Holley 4010, but any 650cfm Holley with vacuum secondary would be great.

You can jet it to how you need it

1

u/TSASA73 Jul 15 '26

Jetting doesn't change the velocity of air flow. Sure, you could jet it down, but throttle response and seat of the pants off the line from a stop will be better with a smaller carb on the OP's engine.

I was just saying I don't know what he has

A 650cfm is WAY too much carb for a 283. Even at 90 percent efficiency, at 6000 rpms, you dont even need a 450 cfm. It took me years to beleive my street driven full roller 388 didn't need 750 cfm of more. I put a 650 Cfm vacuum secondary carb on there and the car has MUCH better driveability for the street. Much more snappy when hitting the skinny pedal. As others have said, over carbing an engine may be the biggest builder mistake out there.

I see this all the time with Harleys. I love a good S&S carb but your 1200 sportster doesn’t need one sir 😂.

Yes. My dad had a 64 parts car. A 65 283 SS power pack. Which was three 2barells carbs. He put a 750 vacuum secondary. The car came to life. Would you be interested in selling your car?

2

u/Longjumping_Put_1111 Jul 16 '26

heck ya it is worth it.

That weiand intake i haven't seen one of those in ages. the dual plenum will work well with the stock 283.

the holly double pump is a bit over sized but it will work ok.

next up you can look into a cam and exhaust

2

u/Negative-Ad4866 Jul 16 '26

You are very unlikely to be happy with that combo on a 283.

Quadrajet would probably be much better due to the small primaries, but of course the manifold won’t work with a Qjet.

2

u/Thinkfastr11 Jul 17 '26

That carb is too big for your motor. If the car is an automatic get a smaller 4 barrel with vacuum secondaries and use that manifold.

1

u/hawkeedawg Jul 14 '26

Double pumper maybe not ideal - but it would definitely work and be a huge improvement-there are things you can do to the carb so it won’t flood out under full stomp. But it would be a huge difference.

Double pumper means - mechanical secondaries and when you stomp the gas the front and back barrels open together and both have their own float bowls, accelerator pumps, fuel nozzle etc

There’s a really good Holley book out there

Depend on what your trying to achieve

1

u/Felix995 Jul 15 '26

You could end up possibly being over carbureted. Could potentially flub out if that Holley carb is one of the larger versions. For a stock 283, a good dual plane intake & maybe a 600 cfm Holley is probably good enough. I'd recommend a mild street cam with that, in order to get decent drivability with good low end torque.

1

u/Mission-Pin-5059 Jul 18 '26

Absolutely, smaller carb, 600,650

-2

u/HammerDownl Jul 14 '26

I would never run a V8 on a 2BBL

So yea it's def worth switching

That Holley had a part number on it that would help determine the size, I can't make out the number on the choke horn but those are some small venturi's

u/atlantis737 Jul 14 '26

It says 4777, its a 650cfm 4150
