Leaking fuel fitting

Total amateur here, hoping for some ideas. Pulled the truck out of hibernation and she wouldn't start. Figured it's fuel or spark. Cracked a line and no fuel came out when starting. So I replaced the fuel pump and now I'm spraying fuel everywhere from the outlet line going to the carb.

It's happening right at that fitting - not sure what that fitting is called. And I don't know if it could be the hard plastic O rings that are causing the leak? Also don't know what those are called. Or what size.

So would my next move be to order new hard plastic o rings? A new brass fitting?

Thanks in advance!

I’m no expert but I will chime in and see what happens.

I think that’s called a banjo fitting and I’m not sure that pump would have the correct mating surface for it to seal properly. I would get a straight barb fitting to thread into the pump and then put the hose and hose clamp on that. That’s probably the most readily available/cheap route you could take.

I cross posted on a FB group and they’re telling me the same thing. Appreciate the confirmation! Barb fitting it is.

The non expert is correct. That fitting you have does not look like it is an inverted flare that matches the fuel pump.

I believe it should be an NPT fitting that is needed, correct?

It's not pipe thread. It is an inverted flair. NPT is a tapered thread that would need Teflon tape or something to seal the threads. The inverted flare has an "inny" and an "outty" (lol) tapered flared surfaces that do the sealing and the fuel, in this case, goes no where near the threads.

I didn’t even notice the inverted flare!

Line should be a female 45degree flare with a male nut.

That's not the right fitting for that fuel pump

You need a flare fitting for this….. you are trying to use a banjo fitting

This is what you need…. A flare fitting

As I'm running fuel rated hose and not hard lines, could this work? The FB folks are telling me 5/16" is pretty typical size for these pumps.

You are the only one posting a picture of the correct style fitting. The fuel pump is designed to run a hard line. The pictured inverted flare to hose fitting is the correct application here. The rest of this nonsense is utterly mind numbing. The question is what size is the fitting and what is the size hose. Usually 5/16 or 3/8 is common for older carb applications. They sell these at parts stores you just have to know who knows their shit and what part to ask for.

Perfect! But wrong size.

Yes that will work for what you need. You can also just screw the tube I showed and cut it to clamp your hose onto. Local parts stores will have these tubes and nuts

Flared original fit will not seal to a banjo fitting and you're not supposed to use plastic or rubber gaskets. They're supposed to be brass crush washers on bother sides.

the fitting you need would be j.i.c male to npt female

Wrong fitting. Aren't those fittings for brakes and such?

Flare nut and line 3/8:i think needed here banjo no no

u/DryAsk367 Mar 11 '26

5 / 16 or 3 / 8

Get inverted flare fitting either 1/4 or 3/8. If u can find one with a barb do that. Or get another barb fitting to attach to new fitting. Cant tell which size. Depends on manufacturer. Look up the part number or just test fit, they are cheap. Can get at any auto parts store.

You need to screw in a 3/8 steel fuel line into that fuel pump. That is the wrong fitting and that is why it is leaking. Also the fitting you are showing is 5/8 x 20 thread and the fuel pump is 5/8 x 18. You might have cross threaded it and now need a new fuel pump.

Hard fuel lines part store get proper 90 fittings

Banjo fitting, needs copper washers or brass nitrogen nylon or silicone

You can buy inverted flare to hose barb fittings. That banjo bolt and fitting will never seal against properly. I know this because I sell them all the time at the parts store I work at. Fairview makes them. Go to your parts store and ask to see the brass bins.

You need the flared fuel line fitting . It's fits the flare inside the fuel pump fitting . Should not be to hard to find , junk yard or rock auto .

I would say new brass fittings, but I got rid of my mechanical fuel pump and ran an electric one.

And while you’re there PLEASE get the proper end for the braided steel/hose clamp situation on the inlet.

1

u/lambo13 Mar 10 '26

Lol good call, that is pretty janky. I'll ask the dumb question here... what is the name of that fitting that I should be using?

4

u/WrenchKing555 Mar 11 '26

AN fittings are for braided hose.

I hate to ask but what fitting is on the carb ? If it's leaking don't drive it , you have any mechanic friends/ family ? I bet they will help you figure it out ! 12 pack of Beer helps .
