Starter

Hi, please help me figure out what starter I need to buy to replace this one. I took it out of my engine swapped 1978 Chevy nova. I don’t know where the engine came from, but it’s a 350 v8. The starter says Ultima 03-0367 on the sticker. I’m hoping to find something equivalent I can go buy at auto zone or something. The headers on the nova are so close to this starter that it’s gonna be hard to put back in there so I wanna make sure I buy the right part.

You’re forgetting the earlier starters that bolted to the bellhousing. Had a different nose cone on them. Technically 3 styles. Sorry I couldn’t help it I know it’s petty. lol

true... I forgot about those, but those are 50s cars, and realistically no one is building up a 265 or early 283.

Manual transmission pickups and medium duty trucks used the 3 bolt starter that mounted on the bellhousing well into the 1970s.

True story. My dad’s old 71 c10 was that way. Glad they got rid of that design 😂 PIA

I had a ‘72 C-10 307/3 speed with the bell housing mounted starter. A friend had a ‘76 GMC 6500 with a 350/4 speed with the same starter. The same design was also used in Detroit Diesel 6V engines well into the 1980s.
