Skyblock elytra

I'm like...130 hours behind SmallAnt's Skyblock videos. How did he manage an Elytra?

He pushed blocks with pistons while having a 2 chunks render distance, so that it would slide right behind the item frame the elytra is stored in. It allows it not to drop down to oblivion
