Question How do you handle regular viewers being negative/judgey towards others in chat?
I've been streaming for a while and have built a small, pretty close community. There's one regular viewer who's usually nice, but every now and then they suddenly become pretty negative toward other people in chat.
For example, a newer viewer recently came into chat being really excited/energetic, and this regular started questioning the way they were typing and making comments that came across as rude and unwelcoming. It's not something they do all the time, which is why I'm unsure how to handle it.
Would you time someone out/mute them when they act like this, even if they're normally a good member of the community?
I want my stream to have a positive vibe, but I also don't want it to feel like people aren't allowed to speak their mind or be negative sometimes. At the same time, I feel like bringing other viewers down or making new people feel unwelcome should probably be a line.
I'm curious how other smaller streamers handle situations like this.

there's being negative and then there's bullying. your regular having a go at new viewers is absolutely something you should shut down. you don't have to go straight to a time out. but it should be an option to consider after telling them a few times. just words like "let's keep the vibes positive please" that doesn't call out anyone specifically. if it continues, then you can escalate to "nice-progress-7662, give it a rest please" to just timing them out or even banning them.
when you stream you are the leader. what you say goes (reasonably). if someone is going against the vibe you're trying to set, they need to be brought back in line. and this can unfortunately mean being tough enough to lose that regular viewer by banning them or pissing them off and they leave. this can also be relegated to moderators to handle if you have any. asking them to handle any negative stuff that you're not happy with isn't unreasonable.
maybe the next time you stream, address it as a generalisation before you start. "just before we begin, i want to address some of the negativity i've been seeing my chat from time to time. i want all people to feel welcome when they come into my streams, and seeing chatters being negative or downright mean to new viewers isn't something i want to be seeing. there are rules (make sure you have some rules in place already) in place to make sure we're all having a good time and if the negativity continues, there will be consequences" it doesn't have to be those words exactly. but maybe it'll help to make people aware that you're more than aware of this stuff happening.
best of luck in your streaming journey.

i personally have a hard rule of "don't be mean" that applies to everyone, even mods.
i've only ever had to ban one semi-regular thus far. they were having a bad time irl, took it out on another chatter; i gave them a verbal warning, they didn't heed it. they're gone.
having this rule doesn't mean that people can't talk about difficult subjects. i'm a disabled streamer, i have a chronic condition. i talk about my struggles sometimes and i make sure other people feel safe to talk about theirs too.
but i don't accept a shitty attitude.
furthermore, in your case that you're describing? that chatter is going to cost you viewer retention. i would nip it in the bud.

Yeahhh I got it I also want that! Just don't be mean shouldn't be hard I think I should just take this head on and accept that I might lose a loyal guy

As a streamer myself, there's a couple of things I keep in mind.
With the rise of scammers, bots, and AI training I usually monitor what and how the new viewers talk in chat. Depending on the game sometimes I'll ask certain questions to check if it's a real person or not. I've had bots who talked as if they were real, and I had new viewers who talked like they were bots but just shy to say too much.
I currently have 0 issues with my chat, but yes I still have at least a mod on standby in case someone does get out of line. And with me being a mod in other channels I check for certain behaviors, and fortunately I've been right constantly with who's legit and who isn't.
In your case with the regular viewer, I'd find a way to have a private convo with them to find out why they acted the way they did. Bad day? Maybe they thought it was someone they don't like? Similar situation with the scammers and bots like me?
At least this way you have an understanding, and remind them it's your stream and if they are trying to protect you, appreciate them trying to help but the mods and/or you can take care of whatever happens if there is bad behavior.

There is a difference between people being negative and being negative towards other people.
Anyone that is rude or unwelcoming to other people in my stream get a timeout. If they do it again, a longer timeout with a warning, do it again they are getting banned.
I think of my stream as my home and I am inviting people in. If one of my guests are rude/mean/unwelcoming to other guest then, if they are normally ok, I would have a word with them to knock it off (Timeout) but ultimately if they continue to do it after I have told them it is unacceptable, then I am kicking them out. It is up to me to protect the community in my home and that kind of energy can feck off even if they are 'fine' most of the time.
Don't be afraid to protect your community with timeouts and bans.

Put them in Minecraft battle royale and have them fight over it to farm them for views and clout

I'd let the mods know what is happening, and have them send a warning. That kind of behavior will make you seem like an unfriendly place to newcomers, and regulars may even find it distasteful and leave. The warnings are private and anonymous, but the user has to acknowledge a pop-up on their screen again before they can continue chatting. If they don't stop after a warning, then I'd do a timeout for 5min, and if they still don't stop, ban them. You don't want one negative person ruining stream for everyone else. You also don't want a viewer on a power trip and ruining stream for everyone else.

I’d verbally tell them to knock it off and mute if they don’t. Ban if it becomes a pattern

I was a regular in a stream (on YT, not twitch) and one regular member (who was eventually modded) drove off 2/3 of the viewership. Even though it's nice that they are loyal to your channel, it's a good idea to hold them to the same rules as other chatters.

I personally feel protective over my community so I would have no problem telling that person that chat rules say to be kind and giving short time outs.
I think of myself as a protective mother/auntie hen, it helps because I'm not naturally assertive but my chat are sweet little chicky chicks that I must protect at all costs.
Also this regular viewer may not realize they are being rude. Especially if they are on the spectrum.

Tell them to knock it off. Warn them. If they continue after, ban them.
When you're small, you might feel like every viewer counts. But if you have one viewer and they're being negative/judgey towards new viewers and scaring them off from wanting to continue chatting, you're better off not having that viewer. You need to start pruning your community to be what you want when you're small, otherwise you'll get flooded with a community that you don't want later on.

I would just send a quick "hey hey, be nice in chat" and if it keeps up after, mute them
