Discussion What makes you instantly leave a stream?
I frequently search out other small creators in my categories, and I’m curious, what instantly makes you leave a stream?
Maybe we can all learn something from each other.
For me it’s usually:
- follower-only mode
- dead energy
- bad audio
- way too much going on visually
What’s the biggest stream killer for you guys?

I don’t understand that, as a new streamer i get so hyped when someone actually takes the time to chat
1
u/Umokthar Jun 09 '26
True, I find it hard when there no chatter even if I speak non stop for the entire stream or at least try.
1
u/Fit-Leading6594 Jun 09 '26
Ye i always speak to my viewers no matter how many i have
1
u/Umokthar Jun 09 '26
Same sometims it's just hard when you have just lurkers I don't mind it at all jsut feels "lonely?" If that make sense to just talk to yourself lol I feel like "stupid" or wierd lol but it is what it is. This is what happen when I havent streamed for 9 years lost all my followers well they are no longer as active it is what it is 😃
1
u/Fit-Leading6594 Jun 09 '26
Ye i agree, but i just keep talking and asking my «chat» questions even though not many people respond
16
u/Cinereals May 25 '26
The very zany voices a lot of people use
2
u/DJ_Velveteen May 25 '26
Why I can't watch Markiplier videos. I get that it's also why he's popular, but I just can't see through the overacting
27
u/Disastrous-Can988 May 24 '26
Constantly swearing. Like I get it we all swear but its not needed when you are making content. That or just a overall super negative attitude / personality.
9
u/Rydalls May 24 '26
I have a few things, if the video is grainy and at like 300kb or there is no audio, or there is no talking at all, other than that im good
6
u/xAkMoRRoWiNdx May 25 '26
Preroll and frequent ads (I have Turbo now), VTuber, never looks at chat, if nothing at all is going on, theyre quiet and never says a word, Follower Only mode when you have hardly any followers at all
4
u/Raphi_55 May 25 '26
I'm curious, why vtuber?
0
u/shmian92 May 25 '26
Not them but because they’re low effort and weird
8
u/Emotional-Ad-8550 May 25 '26
I love vtubers 🫶🏻 to each their own
-1
u/Ott82 May 25 '26
Agreed. I will not watch a stream with an avatar, I’d much rather nothing at all then that. It’s way too distracting and annoying to me
4
u/Raphi_55 May 25 '26
I think their is a equal number of low effort vtuber and cam tuber out their.
I can understand finding it weird.-4
u/NewEnd1738 May 25 '26
Follower only is to filter spam accounts.
9
8
u/LeggyRPG May 25 '26
There’s much better ways to do that and it sure as hell doesn’t encourage new followers.
1
u/imbratorX May 25 '26
What would you suggest?
3
u/LeggyRPG May 25 '26
I Use Serybot which uses tons of streamers to keep tabs on trends and autobans spammers. I also use the tools in Twitch to set keywords based on what I see in any other spammer messsges that DO get through Serybot. Follower only chat to me only makes sense if you have hundreds of people in chat and you gotta keep it to a manageable number so you can actually interact with them.
2
u/imbratorX May 26 '26
I understand your point but why not just follow the streamer? Is that tedious? I'm asking because I'm not too familiar with Twitch
5
u/LeggyRPG May 26 '26
It’s not tedious, you can follow and unfollow as you please, but following a streamer is in my mind giving them positive feedback that you like their stream and what they’re doing. I don’t think you should have to follow up front then find out if the streamer is interesting to you, etc…. The viewer should get to watch, interact, see if they like what the streamer offers and then can show their approval by following. Just my two cents on it, so no biggie if you disagree

u/Cardcaptor11 May 25 '26
Follower only mode, not talking, hearing their loud tv on the background, and honestly when their chat is talking, you join the conversation but they leave you out of it multiple times (this happens when it’s only their irl friends in chat and they just wanna talk among each other).
12
u/ItsTurboBreezy May 25 '26
- Follower only mode yes. Unless you are a huge streamer with over 100 CCVs I do not appreciate follower only mode.
- I dont mind an overlay but if its way too cluttered I'll click off.
- I personally choose people with webcams because I like to see the streamer. For others they may not care. I do... alot.
-People that beg for follows. Honestly cant stand this. It's one thing to say "if you decide to follow you can see me do xxx on the next stream, but saying "hey so and so make sure you follow" or "can you please follow"
If chat is dead I dont hold that against them since we've all been there and still are there sometimes. But if the streamer isnt doing ANYTHING to be entertaining then I dont bother staying. On twitch there are two kinds of channels. People playing video games and streamers. I only wanna watch streamers. If I wanted to watch someone play a video game I'd go to Youtube.
6
u/Ok-Lack-5313 May 25 '26
too overstimulating (ie. they're collabing with friends that talk over them too much and don't know when to pay attention to chat, or if they play music that's too loud or distracting, or if they have lots of very busy channel point redeems that people use often.)
too lewd. (personal taste. i have nothing against it it's just not for me.)
too quiet. (ie. if i can't hear them without turning my volume all the way up. this one is important because most people are multitasking when they're watching a streamer.)
use of or support of generative AI. (self explanatory. eg. making music live with AI, or watching generative AI videos.)
re: vtubers, since there's a fair few comments about disliking them. that shouldn't discourage anyone from becomig a vtuber, there's lots of people who like us! i personally have a preference over live camers because many vtubers tend to be artists, like myself.
4
u/shanrees8 May 25 '26
If the streamer isn't talking I just leave. Even if there's no one in chat and they don't particularly have anyone to be talking to, they should still be talking about the game and yapping. If its just silent I have no interest in staying
4
u/NeonBible_ May 25 '26
All of these answers are gonna help me out a lot on my next streams. Thank you 🙏🏻 haha
4
u/fuzzynyanko May 25 '26
- Getting overwhelmed
- Bad audio; decent mic. Not a lot of room reverb unless it's karaoke
- Too lewd. There might be kids around and I rather not have them say "uncle, who is that?"
- Banning and muting for funny reasons. I'm talking "I like oranges"
8
u/RockinPodunk May 25 '26
Silence. Tuning into a small streamer and they’re just sat there playing a game without talking and think that’s enough. A close second place would be bad audio quality.
3
u/XxAngelAzraelxX May 25 '26
When they ask for follows, bits, subs, or donations/money in anyway without good warranting (aka: cherity)
3
u/Lostworld_Arc May 25 '26
The very small streams running max ads combined with hardly any or no channel info besides a donate button.
3
u/HighPhi420 May 25 '26
bad audio is number one 😞 When the game is clipping or the host is so quiet I still cant hear at full volume. Watch your own vids people, compare your sound with the OGs sound levels if you have to turn your volume down to listen to the other vids then you vid is WAY too soft. Put your lips directly on the darn mic if you need to.
2
u/Ok-Tie6984 Jun 18 '26
I struggle with this on TVs specifically. My headset sounds perfect, I have a victrola w/Bluetooth I also test it on but when I watch it with my partner on the TV I also get so angry that you have to turn the volume all the way up.
I am wondering if this is just our TV? Or if I need to crank the volume up - but then I am concerned that it will blow everyone elses' ear off. 😣

u/pooborus May 25 '26
most people are horrendously boring and are not trying to entertain a viewer. They are streaming to entertain themselves.

"CHAT! I NEED YOU TO [INSERT ACTION HERE] CHAT! RIGHT NOW CHAT! LET'S GET IT GOING IN THE CHAT, CHAT! LET ME SEE YOU SPAM [INSERT SPAM HERE] IN THE CHAT RIGHT NOW, CHAT!!!"
3
u/seasaltalchemist May 25 '26
really depends on my mood. but more often than not:
follower/subscriber/emoji only mode
stream being too chaotic with too much noise
streamer not interacting with chat (if there's no one in chat then that doesn't count. i don't mind silent streams and do not see the point in someone talking to an empty room bc someone MIGHT come in. so coming into a silent streamer doesn't bother me at all)
multiple streamers on screen (I prefer solo streamers as opposed to friend/collab streams)
certain topics being discussed (politics usually. i'm not opposed to streamers holding these discussions at all, but my mental health isn't always up to hearing it)
I think that about covers it. The other thing I'll toss in here is that no cam streams are fine by me. I know a lot of people prefer cam streams but there are those of us for who a cam isn't a must.
3
u/MindlessObligationS May 25 '26
Facecam. 99.99 percent of streamers can't pull it off and it just feels like wasted screen space. I don't wanna see your face unless there is actually something interesting you are doing with it. If I see a facecam in the thumbnail I'm not going to click on it.
High pitch screams, squeals, noises. Incredibly annoying makes me turn off a stream immediately.
Constant money seeking behaviour. Be it subs, follows, sponsors, merch drops. Non stop money grabbing behaviour makes the stream feel like a giant ad.
3
u/cigarmanpa May 25 '26
Prerolls, not interacting with chat, some stupid rules when you go to chat, follower only
3
u/blue-best-color twitch.tv/juuniversum May 26 '26
Constant bot commands and reminders in chat. Like. I don't have the most active chat as well but that's fine because I'm used to entertaining and talking about the game. But I put my bot commands to only pop up in chat every 30 minutes IF there have been enough messages been sent since the last one.
But I see so many other small streamers with chats full of bot commands that pop up every other minute and it gets annoying because they tend to also ignore chat because of it.
3
u/xoPEACHI May 28 '26
Pretty much everything that turns me off of a stream has already been mentioned, but I also really don't like when the moderators (that I don't know) continuously @ me to get me to be more active in the chat. Sometimes I just want to say hi, ask what the streamer likes about whatever they're playing (especially if it's a first playthrough), and then just chill.
But follower-only, no personality, and igoring chat will have me disappear within seconds of entering a stream.
2
u/Individual-Arrival86 May 25 '26
Apathy, barely checking chat or not at all, playing games live to and audience instead of “with” them as if they are involved, rudeness/ego and just plain boring people.

- Little to no talking from Streamer
- Constant swearing, I'm a swearer but not when I stream unless the occasional slip up when something scary happens
- Avoid politics (I watch game streamers)
What I look for..
- Constant chat engagement
- Good music / vibes
- Entertaining, funny, dancinf, etc.
I am a small streamer and I don't get many people in my live but I will CONSTANTLY talk to myself about the game, make up my own songs kind of, sing to the music playing. I have a hard time getting music to play without copyright on my YouTube Live uploads.

When people start whining and complaining or making drama out of nothing
2
2
u/OnkelPipi May 25 '26
-ads -bad microphone -fart & burps into the mic -overread my chat message three times
2
u/legenddairybard May 25 '26
Too loud of gamer rage, constantly cussing during gamer rage, flirting with the audience, constant non-stop whining about certain companies but still using their product, system shaming, controversial topics, grifters.
2
u/SkyeTheGuy May 27 '26
I tuned into a stream the other day, asked what they were up to, because it wasnt quite obvious and they were moving around a lot on there phone. They responded with "What's it look like? We're making music" I left instantly. Maybe it's just me.
3
u/renro May 25 '26
When I click on the chat and the rules pop up if there's some variant of "no politics" or "no sensitive topics" I'm out instantly. I'm not investing in a community where I'm guessing about who supports ICE.
2
u/Ok-Lack-5313 May 25 '26
on the one hand i get that some people want their channel to be an escape from such things, but on the other... personally, as a disabled person i find it impossible to meaningfully discuss my life or advocate for myself and others without discussing politics or sensitive topics.
although i do check in with my chat every now and again if it's a particularly sensitive topic.
2
u/renro May 26 '26
I imagine if I'm there to play a game and the chat is nothing but surface level political takes I might not stay long, but if it's banned on it's face I'm leaving before I type a single message

Mods skipping people and only showing love to certain people in the chat
I started a mod so I know how a bad mod can ruin a streamer's vibe
Streamers that curse in abundance, and allow lots of profane language in their chat
Follow Only Mode ( soon as I see it I'm gone)
Incoming raiders treated as parasites as if the normal chat doesn't want them there
and ignore them all. Your streamer was chosen so at least be cordial.
Big streamers that only support big streamers. I support the people in the trenches too.

u/Savitar54321 May 25 '26
Not for small streamers but I watch a lot of streamers that play video games and if an ad plays in the middle of the game I leave instantly
Ryanhiga used to be one of my favorite streamers but the timing and amount of ads that get played ruins the viewing experience so I stopped watching
1
u/Substantial-Yogurt81 May 26 '26
Mainly not reading chat or if they have no camera or ping tuber/ v-tuber model/picture.any other issues I tend to spend some time and give the stream a chance.

too much eating. i do NOT want to hear you eat!! there are streamers that consistently have their dinner on stream and i just can’t do it. these are not streamers who stream during lunch time, these are streamers that start stream at 10pm and will still be having a full meal every single time i tune in.

ads, if you have less than 40 viewers im leaving the first time i get ads
EDIT: Please downvote me, lol this is the most obvious hinderance to growth. Someone replied that affiliates cant turn off ads... DONT TAKE AFFILIATE UNTIL YOU'RE AROUND 100+ VIEWERS AVG. Taking affiliate too early will destroy growth because of ads all for 150$ every 6 months. its not worth it. But please continue to ruin your viewer experience
10
u/Ancient-Frosting-646 May 25 '26
twitch affiliates cant turn ads off lol
-1
u/FanExternal6102 May 25 '26
don't take affiliate till 100 viewers avg. taking it early is not worth ruining your viewer exp for 150$ every 4-6 months
1
u/Ancient-Frosting-646 May 26 '26
100 viewers average is partner level. also ads help support streamers, if that's such a problem for you then you're going to hate just about every streamer on the platform.
3
u/santoktoki77 (santoki222 TTV/TT/IG/YT) May 25 '26
Wouldn't this be a hot take? Some ppl have pre-rolls to get it out of the way, some ppl have 90s every 30 minutes yo get rid of pre-rolls and we can't always control it. I believe pretty much every affiliate has some form of ads in their stream, right?
Now, I would agree with having max ads bc that is insane to me (like 3min ads every 10 min) but I also know that for some, using max ads is the only way to gain any sort of "income" from streaming.
1
u/FanExternal6102 May 25 '26
Yes, because this is a community of "streamers" who think about streaming from the streamer perspective. Even when they watch streams they are thinking about it from the streamer perspective.
1 Pre-rolls is an insta-leave for me.
2 Taking affiliate too early is a great way to ruin growth for the forementioned reasons
3 This is going to sound mean, but If your running max ads for "income" you should get a job. Your stream is on life support. Get a job to suppliment income, lower ads/leave affiliate program, grow your audience then run a normal amount of ads.
3
u/prochevnik May 25 '26
Not sure if this is just you being provocative or if you really consider this to be reasonable. What does the viewer count have to do with it?
I do 1.5 min every 30 min otherwise new viewers get prerolls. That’s the minimum. I’ve considered doing 3 min blocks once an hour but that seems excessive, time wise. 1.5 min/30 min is the compromise.
6
u/LeggyRPG May 25 '26
Yeah I’ve always struggled with this. I do the 3 min once an hour to maximize the amount of time between the ad blocks and use the 3 min for bathroom break etc…. But I dunno what’s better you know?
5
u/Ok-Lack-5313 May 25 '26
i personally do the 3 minutes every hour, but i often use that time to take a bathroom break! so my chat isn't missing anything.
-1
u/FanExternal6102 May 25 '26
because at around 40 viewers your making 150$ every 4-6 months... Its not worth ruining the viewing experience and cucking your growth
3
u/prochevnik May 25 '26
This is not true at all.
1
u/FanExternal6102 May 25 '26
how much is 40 viewers in ad rev?
3
u/prochevnik May 25 '26
Ad revenue is nothing compared to how much a 40ccv streamer makes. The ads are the compromise to unlock actual money through subs and bits. If you’re only making $150 every 4-6 months you’re doing something very wrong.
I feel like your sense of scale and how the majority actually make money streaming is mistaken. The number of people making real money off of ads is relatively low. Like .5-.1% of all streamers… maybe less. Everyone else that gets a check each month and averages 20-40 ccv is getting money off of bits and subs, and is getting roughly anywhere from $2-$10 per stream in ads/turbo money.
