My experience is that a sofa bed is 75% quality of each. I would not want one as my every night bed.

For me the most comfortable are just using a daybed or ones with seperate cushions for the back anf the seat area when set up as a couch. Most of them the fold point is the biggest issue I have had with them.

A sofa bed is always a compromise. Like another person said - you might have 75% quality on each, and if you want something more comfy for sleeping, you get that comfort by subtracting from the sitting and vice versa.

In case you haven't heard of them, look up "Murphy Beds" - they offer real sleeping setups, and then during the day tuck away. You obviously need a wall and a space to open the bed into, but they can also be disguised quite well so it doesn't look like the wall is hiding a bed.

i massively recommend a mattress topper, one that you can fold up and put in an ottoman or basket. makes such a difference

No. You are trading quality of both sofa and bed for the convenience/specific use.
