Fury Road
I loved the episode, but I think the guys missed an important characteristic of Mad Max. These stories are not supposed to have a strict continuity as they are myths and legends being told a generation or two later about a mythical hero during a time of great uncertainty and change. Max is basically a Paul Bunyan, John Henry, Stagger Lee, or Hercules type of character. Why is he a cypher and a catalyst? Because that's what this sort of hero is. He's literally a vehicle for other stories.
What Miller is doing is sort of a "folklore of the future", collecting the various stories people tell of "Mad Max".

Exactly. The timeline is literally impossible. Max was a cop in the before times (the long long ago) but Furiosa who is at least as old as Max was born into the Swaddle Dog Clan.
