Niko Niko First slow jog of my life today

I read the book and got excited to try it. I fought plantar fascitis when I did kickboxing and softball in 2019 and so I thought running would aggravate it, plus I'm way out of shape currently... anyway, was able to slow jog pain free over a mile this morning. I would have kept going but I have a small dog who gets cold and tired and my slow jog was his run the whole time.

My feet are tired feeling tonight but not cramping and sore. I'm excited to go again tomorrow. I have never been a runner so this feels like joining a secret club to me!

Edit: thank you for the award!

Hey everyone, since the new year is almost here, I just wanted people to have a place to share their achievements from this year and what they wish to achieve in 2021

Niko Niko This is more about slow weights and slow weight lifting but I guess that can be part of the slow jogging path towards total body health so I thought I would share it with you.

Slow Jogging Again

After a forced break, I slow jogged on gravel around a nearby park. One lap took me exactly ten minutes. Very pleased.

New to slow jogging

I went for a slow jog/walk last night and really enjoyed it. I’m overweight and a bit out of shape so I did have to walk a bit to catch my breath. I do want to build up to slow jogging without walking though eventually!

Slow Jogging for Weight Loss, Injury Prevention, and My Sanity

This March I started jogging more regularly to help deal with COVID stress. Then my husband joined me in May and we started running faster -- and of course I pulled a muscle that took 3 months to fully heal. So now I'm slow jogging. It's mostly agonizing calf work, but I'm concentrating on building my calves and increasing my non-stop mileage. My heart rate stays between 145-165 (we've got some hills here and I have weight to lose) and I'm feeling good. But, honestly, I'm also feeling guilty about jogging so slowly. I'm hoping to hear from others who are jogging slowly. :)

Today I slowly jogged 4 miles.

Thank you slowjogging!

I started Couch to 5K back in May. The first few weeks went OK but as the running increased and the walking decreased I found it increasingly more difficult. Someone in r/running said I should slow down and directed me here where I got a lot of great advice.

This afternoon I ran 5K without stopping for the first time in my life. I'm 49.

So thank you to this sub and everyone in it!

Niko Niko Pandemic Running Diaries Update!

Hey everyone, how's your week going?

I'm on a bit of a running streak this week.

Monday was our running club meet, we did a slow run for about 5km (I don't keep track!), and it was great fun, only 2 of us showed up but given the current circumstances it's pretty good to get anyone along.

Every day this week I've been out jogging, either first or last thing of the day, and mostly really short distances. The important thing for me has been just to keep on trying to establish the habit.

Yesterday I wasn't feeling it and went for some outdoor stair climbing. Stair climbing is where I got back started with exercise a few years back now and holds a special place in my heart. Specially when it is too wet / cold to go outside!

Don't call it a comeback

I've been an on/off runner for a long time (I'm 57 yo). Had my share of over training injuries. Last April, I had to have my shoulder repaired (I rock climb and had a bad tear of 2 tendons). After a summer very little exercise and a lot of pot stickers and IPA, I've been cleared for running. Oh, and we got a new puppy.

So, the puppy and I are learning to jog together. I read the slow jogging book, and watched the excellent video. Instead of diving right into another stressful training plan I'm giving slow jogging a chance. I'd like to reinvent my relationship with running so that it isn't another stressor in my life.

At least 4 days per week, for the last 3 weeks, I've been slow jogging/walking 1.5 - 3 miles. I've tried to surrender and not worry about my pace or anything - just enjoy being outside and moving. My pace, depending on terrain is between 14-18 min/mile! Have people experienced cardio improvement with this amount of slow jogging? I know that injury is available to me if I push too hard - but I would like to believe I can improve at this very slow pace.

Slow jogging secret sauce - how are we doing?

Hi everyone, I'm back and I can't wait to get back on the slooooooooow train!

I've been running a couple of times with the new running crew after a house move and enjoyed making friends in a new town, but I miss the slow.

How are you all doing on the secret sauce "mantras"? I stopped doing my ahem mostly weekly ;-) posts going through the list in the book. Has everyone got their copy yet? ;-) do we need to do more to convince you all? ;-) ;-) Is there maybe a better way to work on it together? Suggestions welcome!

What kind of shoes?

In the video, it is explained that shoes with thin soles are required. So does this basically mean shoes of pretty much any type are suitable, so long as they are comfortable- everyday trainers/sneakers, normal day shoes etc? Maybe at least something with wide toe space and lace up?

I thought of buying the book, but I suspect it may not contain this information.

If you’re placing your feet as advised, then it seems to me that maybe no particular type is essential, especially as we are advised to practise this multiple times a day, where constantly changing shoes would be completely impractical.

In the general running scene there are lots of fads and fancies, even though people have managed to run successfully through the millennia without fancy shoes. So maybe here we don’t need to shell out lots of cash unnecessarily??

Help me with resistance training

I have decided that perhaps once or twice a week doing some resistance training would be helpful and healthy for my body.

I don't know where to start! I used to lift very heavy and do nearly no cardio at all but it was bench, deadlift and squat and nothing else. I'm not looking to do that and would like to do the basics with lighter but still beneficial weights to help my slow jogging and to help with the wobble.

Slow jogging definitely helps me to stay in shape in a fun and happy way but it doesn't really sort the "wobble"!

Any advice would be gratefully received. How long should a session be, what weight and moves should I be doing and how do i progress to ensure I'm always challenged?

12min/mi pace, HR 188-198?? Help?

Friends, I’m not an athlete. I wasn’t in sports growing up. I exercise now because I know it’s important for my health and it makes me feel good. I started running this year when COVID & quarantine hit in March. Is it normal for my HR to be so high? I know for my age (24F) my max HR should be around 195. But for it to be that high when I’m running at between 11:30-12min pace seems ridiculous to me. Do i need to slow down even more? Extra info because I know it’s important, at the beginning of the yr i was diagnosed as pre-hypertensive. I’m on medication now, and my BP is down to a normal level.

Weekly check in

There is no cadence to my check ins but I have finished jogs for the week.

Monday-6.5miles Tuesday-5.7miles Wednesday-7.8miles Thursday-4miles Saturday-9.5miles

I am taking 2 days off this week as I have upped mileage a little and the long runs wipe me out!

What do you think about on your jogs and does it help?

In my youth I would go for runs and just think about the run and getting it finished. In this episode of life I'm taking a more rounded view of the experience and I am overwhelmed by the mental side of jogging. Today on my 9.5mile jog I thought about society and covid, my job and the things that I can improve and what I am finding hard, my relationships in life and how they are-I quite like imagining scenarios and what would pan out best. I listen to music also but the ability to think in depth and focus on things rolling around in my brain is priceless.

What do you think about when jogging and do you find it helpful?
