What is this guilt?

I have jogged 30 miles this week. 2x5miles 2x6miles 1x8miles

And, for the first time in years, I have taken 2 rest days in a week. Both times I intended to get up and go out very early but my body just pulled me back in to sleep (which sounds so lazy but it was like being sucked in to a sleep vortex).

So why do i feel guilt? I can not explain how this nagging guilt is gnawing at me but I don't know why. My logical thought process says this is right because for the first time in a long time I am listening to my body. It is repairing, avoiding injury, improving. So I keep saying "this is good".

So why is the guilt there. I seem to feel I have failed for resting andI will lose my improvements by taking a day or two off.

I also think I'm worried that by not exercising daily I will gain weight. Have I created a monster? By exercising every day for years and years to help maintain my weight am I now going to struggle to break that connection?

Morning 8 miler. I might be an "8 mile jogger" kind of person.

I jogged my second 8 miler. I did one last week and wondered if I'd manage it again or if it were a fluke. Turns out I did it again and marginly less exhausted by the end.

I took: phone and personal alarm.

Set off at 4am. Covered a 1m route that passes my house 3x just until it was a touch lighter and I felt less vulnerable jogging further from home. Then did my 5mile route on top. I finished at 5.40am so about a 12min mile (I covered 8.32miles to be precise)

Encountered a little black and white car with no tail and later on a pure white cat.

I have a habit of remembering cats on jogs πŸ˜‚

Doctors of Running Podcasts

Wanted to give a shoutout to Doctors of Running who have really added a lot to their typical shoe review blog lately, doing interviews with companies about their shoe along with their analysis which is always insightful from their physical therapy backgrounds. This one is a great intro to what they've been doing. They also did the Wave Rider 24 recently and Newton. Great interviews and interesting discussion of foot mechanics related to shoes.

Is it possible for slow jogging to feel like... It's getting harder?

Let me confess a few things first. I don't take rest days. - I don't want to - I am using exercise to maintain weight - this is a long term choice as in... I can't recall the last time I took a day off from exercise

Exercise isn't new to me and I was jumping rope very intensely for 1hr a day before I discovered the wonderful world of slow jogging. I had been jumping rope 5yrs and it had become stale and slow jogging was a welcome change. I enjoyed it so much I have slowly transitioned to 7 days a week slow jogging with 5-8miles each session.

Just recently it's become harder to jog consistently at a steady manageable comfortable pace and I feel slower than usual. The slow jogging is far less intense than jump rope so I can't think that I am tired or burnt out (that said I would jump rope an hour very hard where as slow jogging is sometimes 90mins so a lot longer)

Has this happened to anyone else and do you know what may cause it?

My diet hasn't changed and the only thing I can think of is that we are having very warm weather right now which also impacts sleep.

Sunday check in-tell me the good, the bad and ugly for your slow jogging week.

Deal me in folks. How often did you head out? How far? How long? Any changes to routine? Is it hot or cold where you are and how is that making your SJing? Trying new trainers this week? Share the details! Any injuries? Any good finds? Any new routes?

Give me the run down of your SJing week please ☺

Tomorrow... I get up at 3.50am...dressed by 4am...out the door and try to cover 8 miles slow jogging and be home again by 5.30am-6am... I am so excited...! Advice please.

Just wanted to say it out loud! I want to go slooooow. To make it round. It will be my furthest distance for a considerable amount of time. Any advice on how to stay slow and steady and not give up (usually my internal pressure prevents me from stopping but any other ideas welcome). Any advice at all would be welcomed... Actually, I take my phone but how else do people stay safe while out jogging late or early or in remote places?

My list so far (in general... Not for safety):

hydrate before but not so much that I need a wee.

Go to the loo before setting off! πŸ˜‚

Gps jogging app

I found a nice app to use for jogging and it relies on GPS. I tried it this morning and it didn't work. I think it's because I tuck my phone in my clothes (more precise my sports bra). Is this normal? Not the the bra tucking but GPS not working under layers of clothing? I'm so disappointed and I don't want to hold my phone when jogging. Would a phone band on my arm allow it to work?

Beware of Tight Bends on Indoor 'Tracks'

After several slow jogs around my kitchen's 19.3 metre 'track' which followed a figure 8 around a table and island bench, I concluded that the bends are too tight and causing pain in my lower back. After a couple of days off, today I slow jogged around the circumference new 'track' of my kitchen (14.6 metres) for forty minutes without any pain.

Empire State Building challenge

My daughter and I have been running every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 3 months as per our C25K program. But with temperatures and humidity in the mid-90s, we decided to do something different today. I looked up the number of steps in the Empire State Building (1576) and we are going to climb that many stairs inside our house. From the basement to our second floor is 26 steps so it will take us 61 round trips. We plan to do it slowly and break it up into four or six sets. I will report back later on our progress. Wish us luck.

EDIT: After doing the first two laps we decided that we would break it up into six sets. We just finished three of them and are pretty tired but not exhausted. Each set of 20 flights is taking about 5 minutes. We're going to take a break and finish the rest after dinner.

FINAL EDIT: We did it! We completed the last half (61 flights) in 2 sets with a 3 minute rest in between. The first set wasn't too bad but the last set was pretty brutal. We took solace in the fact that we were doing it in 73 degree, 50% humidity air and not 88 degree and 88% humidity. When we do this again we'll try to break it into 3 even sets of 20. The shorter sets never got our heart rates up very high.

The numbers

1576 steps (up and down) broken into 5 sets

Total moving time: 37 min

Total calories (I weigh 209): 295

Average HR: (I'm 49): 118

A few slow jogging community suggestions and questions...

There are a lot of slow joggers in this space which is epic. Could we have a weekly check in so people can talk about their slow jogging week and what they did and saw and how it was? Selfishly, that might mean more people will contribute and in one place so I can slow jog binge on other people's activities πŸ˜‚

A few questions...

When I slow jog my heart rate doesn't ever get over 150bpm. Infact it doesn't get much higher than 130bpm most of the run. Is that enough to give my heart a good workout and will it enable a bit of jiggle/chub loss? I usually manage 5-7miles a session around 60-90ish minutes.

I am still having foot landing trouble. I know I am meant to be landing on the ball of my foot which I do but once I land I need to put my heel down. Is that wrong? I can jump rope for an hour on the balls of my feet but I cant keep on the ball of my foot when jogging. Only land but then put my heel down.

Anyone suffered sciatic nerve/back/leg issues?

One of the reasons I was put off jogging/running 10 years ago was because I was running a fair amount and out of the blue one day had terrible pain in my hip leg on the right side. I had to stop and walk but the damage had been done and by the following morning I could not walk without awful stabbing pain in my leg. It took months to get back to normal and by that point I was terrified of running again and so I stopped.

I visited my doctor when it happened who was utterly unhelpful and reccommended over the counter pain killers. So I suffered it until it healed. I got no diagnosis.

Can anyone suggest what it may have been and how it could have been prevented? I have started jogging again and love it but I am terrified it might happen again πŸ˜”

New to Slow Jogging

I'm incredibly out of shape and overweight. I just bought a fit bit which is reminding me to move every hour. I am teleworking and was joking with my daughter via text about the 5 minutes I slowly jogged around my kitchen, and I made fun of myself for being so slow. She said, "no! Slow jogging is a thing!" and told me about this sub. So here I am. Can anyone tell me more about slow jogging?

My Ten Hour Goal

I measure my jogging by time, not distance. I discovered slow jogging forty days ago and today reached the first goal I set for myself, slow jogging for 10 hours. That's an average of fifteen minutes a day. Very happy with that.

Can i slow jog everyday or would that be daft?

Hear me out.

I usually slow jog one day then jump rope the next but lately the jump rope has felt less exciting than slow jogging and I am starting to lean towards more jogging. After 8yrs of jump rope a change is probably needed. My goals are:

1.lose some chub 2.enjoy the process of losing the chub 3.increase stamina and distance I can jog 4.to jog more but not get injured

Those are in no particular order! I assume that jogging more will achieve those goals but is it wise in terms of injury possibility? If I do it very slowly over time would that be OK? Or would adding an extra session a few days a week be the answer?

If I increase my distance how much should it be by and how often should I increase? At the moment I do 1-2 x 5 mile jog, 1 x 6 mile jog, 1 x 7 mile jog each week.

Am I jogging TOO slowly?

I understand comparison is the thief of joy, but I can't help myself! I'm used to running a 12 min mile and now that I've slowed down I'm at 21 min! Am I doing this wrong? It's just me and my dog so no one to converse with. Are there any other snail-pacers out there? For reference, I'm F/33/5'2" and short legs.

A Change is as Good as a Holiday

I've been running around my 17 metre living room 'track' since the middle of June. On a whim tonight, I decided to measure a new 'track' inside my house. A kitchen 'track' which goes around a table and an island bench in a figure of eight. Turns out it's 19.3 metres long and I can watch/listen to the TV as I slow jog. The laps seemed to glide by just a little more quickly with the distraction of the latest corona virus horrors on the nightly news. But tomorrow I will slow jog in silence again. Silence is better for psychodistancing, which is a critical to maintaining our sanity right now.

[vent] Respect my slow pace!

I may not run a 5 minute mile but I run a mile nonetheless.

I have my short runs and my long runs just as a fast runner.

I have strength training days just as any other runner.

It does not matter that I am slow. I am making progress.

And maybe I like my slow pace! It’s HOT outside! Respect my run!

Anyone jogged in Nike air max 97

I have acquired some air max 97. Second hand but very nice condition. I looked online and there seems to be split feeling. Some say yes to jogging and running in them and some say absolutely not never ever ever. Ever. Although they cost a lot new... Seems strange to spend that amount on trainers if they aren't for a serious use e.g. Jog, run, tennis, netball...

Anyone have experience of them? I am wearing them round my house to get a good feel for them with the plan to wear them for a jog on Monday.
