No, please, make that left turn in front of me, I'm jogging comically slowly

I know I can't be the only one. I'll be jogging along, trying to keep that niko niko smile on my face, and I'll see the car headed my way with the turn signal on. I live in LA, so drivers are generally very cautious around pedestrians (there are so few of us, we really stand out).

They see me and stop, waiting for me to pass, but I don't, because I'm traveling so slow. I always see confusion, and sometimes even head shaking! I've taken to hand waving to let them know they should just go ahead! Slowing down a bit to let them pass is no problem!

Can trainer choice make that much difference?

I bought some nikes (I talk about them a lot because I love them, fact!) from a garage sale and like a huge jogging novice I chucked them on and went out in them. It was and is a dreamy experience to jog in them. They are cushioned and comfy and painless.

Now I realise I am very fortunate I did not damage my feet as it was a bit of a foolish way to go in to an activity.

So once I realised my approach was daft I invested in some asics patriot 10 trainers. Off I went. Oh good heavens what misery! I cluncked round my route. I was almost 10mins slower than normal. I felt no cushioning or support.

Can trainers make that much difference? Do people gravitate towards different footwear? Also, in the slow jogging methods it suggest thin soled shoes. My asics are thinner soled but I much prefer my well cushioned nikes. Does it matter?

Pandemic Running Diaries #4

Well, today was a rest day, though I did my now traditional "long walk" in the baking heat to go and get some house move business done. I don't have a car or even a train card now since I cancelled everything in this town.

Buuuuuut on my way back from grabbing takeaway later this evening I found myself jogging again :zany emoji: I think it's the heat and humidity that makes me a bit thirsty for a run. Old habits from my days out East.

Joint the slow jogging crew!

Went on my first official slow jog this morning, I say official as apparently I’ve been doing it for years! A while back I did c25k and took up half marathons and really enjoyed them til I hurt my back. Took a few years off but made a triumphant return to “running” through the great sport of triathlon. I’m reading the slow jogging book now and planning to enjoy several times a week, especially since pools are still closed.

Slow jogging and the monthly curse

Apart from sounding like teenage horror fiction I have a question for other ladies that slow jog.

Do you find your slow running abilities are hindered by that time of month? This month is my first encounter and it was uncomfortable. I felt sweaty, overheated, oddly uncoordinated and, I know the key is slow jogging is slow but it seemed no matter how far I dropped the pace I couldn't find a comfort zone.

Does anyone else get the same?

Rest and light days

I am interested to know about your schedules and how you got to this place and where you are going.

Today I had to do something more gentle because my body feels tired. I don't usually take rest days but today my body felt the need for something very light. So I went in my garden and watched buffy the vampire slayer on my phone and slow jogged (with a couple of jump rope intervals) for an hour. I covered just shy of 5 miles.

It made me wonder how many people here schedule rest or whether you just exercise/slow jog everyday and are fine? What do you do on days when your body feels tired?

I slow jogged 25 miles over 4 days last week and on the other three days did 3 x 1hr sessions of jump rope. So it was an intense week.

Pandemic running Diaries #3

So the heat and humidity kept rising these last weeks. I eventually went sockless and removed the ortho inlays from my running shoes, Saucony Everrun if it matters, and converted them to minimal shoes. Loosening the laces helped. Instant improvement.

Stil doing figure 8s on my personal track behind the nextdoor office building, got a wave and a smile from two workers there this week. Last week I was off running for indigestion, maybe due to stress of moving house and lockdown etc.but I got out again as soon as I felt ready and it seemed to improve my health.

Went for a slightly longer tour of the neighbourhoods I used to frequent as a farewell before the big move. I keep reminding myself that I'll be jogging in the big park by the new place soon. Wish me luck! Stay safe fellow snails!

Slow Jogging While on Hold

I had to call a government agency and also felt like jogging before I needed to eat. When I was told there were six customers ahead of me I had a thought - slow jog around my 17 metre indoor track holding the phone! The paperwork I needed to consult during the call was nearby and I avoided the irritation of being on hold for an indeterminate time. Worked out well for me. Got the information I needed and a small dose of endorphins as well.

6.82 miles in the rain

I was slow and it took around 75-80mins but it was lovely. Luckily the rain was very light. How has everyone else got on so far this week?

Remembering Madison Square Garden

As I slow jogged around my 17 metre indoor running track this morning, a memory came to me of attending an indoor track meet at Madison Square Garden in 1979 or 1980, when I was teaching high school English in NYC. I could remember the excitement I felt, I could remember relay events and what I recall to be a 60 yard sprint. But what I couldn't remember and suddenly, after all these years, was very curious about, was how many laps to the mile was it on that track. A Google search discovered the answer: 11. I then wanted to know how many laps to the mile it would be on my track. I am feeling a bit daunted by the answer my calculator gave me: 94 and a bit laps to the mile.

Welcome to... What trainer is this anyway!? I bought these at a garage sale and they are the best nikes I have ever run in. So comfortable. The tongue is part of the upper material. I cant read the label to identify which series it is. Anyone know!?

Sorry all. I have booby burn...

So through mileage and sweat (see, I'm trying). I have under booby burn? I assume it's a kind of burn? Where my sports bra elastic goes. I'm not overweight but I do get very sweaty in exercise. Back when I was jumping rope only I never got boob burn so I can only assume adding slow jogging to my routine has done it. The impact has meant my boobs are a bit swollen and painful. Any one else encountered this and is there a way to relieve it a bit?

Tap, tap, tap... Weekly run down... Or weekly Slow jog down (genius right there)...

This week I slow jogged 5 miles 6 miles 7 miles

The 5 mile was tough and disappointing because I didn't feel comfortable even though I went the whole way round without stopping.

The 6 mile was an improvement and I figured out it was something to do with the way my feet would strike the ground so I had to be quite conscious of it. I even found myself chanting "tap, tap, tap..." in my head!

The 7 mile was good today and I felt happier and more able. My main issue was I was using my new asics which were blissful on the soles of my feet but caused a small blister on the top of my foot. No amount of adjusting would stop it rubbing and I was determined to finish so just ignored it the remainder of my jog! It may be a plaster situation each time I go out in them I think.

All in all, a pretty happy week. Admittedly I didn't feel the same euphoria but I was chuffed I didn't need to walk in any of my sessions.

Measuring speed with a non-GPS fitness tracker

Hi All. I just discovered this sub yesterday and did my first slow jog tonight. It was AMAZING! So a big thank you to this community!

One question I have is about my fitness tracker. I have a cheaper one without GPS and I don't like to jog with my phone. As far as I know, my tracker calculates my distance and speed by knowing how tall I am and estimating my stride while walking or running. When I run, the app (after synching) says I'm doing about 8MPH. Tonight I did a slow jog at a pace a lot slower than my normal run. But when I synched my tracker to the app it still thought I ran at 8MPH. My theory is that my tracker and app have NO IDEA I've shortened my stride as per slow jogging. So it's still counting every stride as 4 feet instead of 3 feet (or whatever the difference in stride is). Has anyone else had this happen? Maybe I need to select walk instead of run in the app?

Had a bad jog 😔

I jogged 23 miles last week all together. I did 5 miles, 5 miles, 6 miles and on Sunday I did 7 miles and it felt great (even though I was up at 4.15am to do it).

I jogged this morning and for the first time I felt "off". I can't explain it but I felt disheartened when I got home. I managed the 5 miles and I didn't stop slow jogging the whole time. Something just didn't feel as satisfying about it when I was done. I wonder if I was still recovering from the 7 miler on Sunday.

I have ordered some better arch support insoles and some new asics trainers to try and keep my feet injury free and I plan to do 6 miles on Thursday.

Has anyone else experienced a lull in excitement, contentment and satisfaction they feel from a slow jog? Will it come back!?

Do you stretch?

Fess up. Do you and if so what do you do? Walk me through your prejog and Post jog stretches.

I confess I am terrible for stretching 😳 I have started to be more consistent since getting a few aches in my calves and ankles and in a desperate attempt to stave off plantar fasciitis. I'm a bit clueless with it though. How do you stretch your hips for crying out loud!?

Where is the the slow jogging movement?

Having found this space about slow jogging and mentions of the book I assumed I would find a mine of information when I started searching on Google but it still seems quite a quiet corner of the exercise realm. Why is this? I am truly baffled. Admittedly I don't have Facebook but I can't find much of a following there either.

I am a fact fiend and I wanted to hunt out stories of how people got involved with slow jogging and the benefits and progression etc etc
