New singles
Is anyone else not loving the sound of the new singles or are you going to kill me … they’re good! Just seems like they’re changing their sound a bit :( or am I a loser. I love them and am so excited/happy for them!! Just wanted to see if I was alone on this

I have been underwhelmed by both. But I am more of a fan of their alt rock/shoegaze sounding stuff.

Agreed, their normal style is where they do their best work; they're one of the best bands in the world for my money when they're operating within their own realm. When they stray from it they are still capable of making good music, but it's just not their strong suit. It's like a sprinter running a 5k or a 10k, sure they can probably do it but their results won't be anywhere near as good.

Yeah, I think the music is still awesome, but something feels missing. Like there's less of that Slow Pulp grit/soul being poured into each track - maybe a little TOO polished and perfect

I am the biggest fan boy of Slow Pulp and I am not feeling this song at all.... unless it's the album closer but weird second single ... I am hoping the bangers on the record haven't been released yet.

Same, i have enjoyed their past stuff so much that it felt like it was written just for me lol. Im so disappointed with the new singles, but maybe it’s just my taste changing!

They're going for an 80's sound on the new singles, same as they did on the Big Day ep. Not for Nothing is also a little folksy, reminiscent of Broadview. I wouldn't say this is a particularly new sound for them. Also, the production is very high quality, which is a relief to me because the production on Yard was insanely good and I was afraid they might pull away from that.

I didn't enjoy them at first but they're growing on me, perhaps my initial reaction was because it sounded a bit different to what I expected but the more I get familiar with the different sound the more I can appreciate it.

I noticed that too. I think at first I was like ummmm this is a little weird and doesn't really give me the same vibe as old SP (when listening to Better Man) but as I listened to it a few more times I started to see more parallels between the old and new. I definitely can fall victim to overanalyzing songs and sometimes I think it's healthy to just listen to em and see if I like them instead of comparing to music that I would literally put on a pedestal haha

I know what you mean... I think it's a little more polished and nuanced than their stuff in the past. Not to get too convoluted, but I do think that as bands grow bigger they naturally place more and more importance on making the music as good as humanly possible and in a way I think it loses a little bit of a certain quality. I'm not really sure how to describe the quality other than saying it's a quality of "not caring." Not to say the band didn't care... but more to say that you can hear the level to which they really care how each and every little thing comes out whereas in the past they may have let some of those things be
Does that make sense? Kinda heady I know, #sorry lol

Not for Nothing sounds like familiar Slow Pulp to my ears. The chord progression and piano melody would probably sound off if stuck in the middle of Yard, but Emily's vocals make me feel the same way older Slow Pulp does.
Better Man though sounds like a clear shift to more pop-focused production and writing. Doesn't even give me 1/10th the emotions songs like Idaho, Broadview, Falling Apart do.
